All's Fair In Love And War.
"It's gorgeous" I said, tears stinging the back of my eyes as Hawk slipped the diamond ring onto my finger. "Now you have to marry me," I whispered. "I have no intention on doing anything else" Hawk replied huskily. "I just have one thing to ask". "What's that?" I asked. "Could we wait until after all this is over before we get married? I would really like my dad to be there". "Of course sweetheart, I wouldn't have it any other way".
The following month or so went on as normal. Wounded kept coming in to be patched up, only to be sent back to the front again to be used as human targets. Frank and Margaret were being their usual selves, snatching moments alone whenever they thought no one was watching, only to ridicule others for doing the same. Hawkeye had written a letter telling of our engagement, and he received a reply from an excited father who couldn't wait for the big day. I was excited, but also sad at the same time. I couldn't wait to get married, but I also felt that the War would never be over, and even though I knew I shouldn't I was starting to get impatient. I sensed Hawkeye was feeling the same too. I suppose every girl dreams of a white wedding and I was no exception. I wanted the church, the flowers, the organ music, and a handsome husband to be waiting for me as I walked down the aisle. I suppose it was a bit too much to ask for during a War, but it doesn't hurt to dream.
One night when Hawkeye and I had finished making love, and were laid in each other's arms, he turned to me and asked "where do you see us in five years time?" "That's easy" I said, "we live in a little house in Crabapple Cove, with your father nearby, and a little boy to call our own." "What about a little girl?" Hawkeye said, "why not one of each" I said giggling. Hawkeye squeezed me tight, "why not" he said. I looked at him, my face serious now. "You do want children don't you Hawkeye?" "Of course I do Jen" Hawk said, "what made you ask that?" "I don't know, I just have a dream I guess, marriage, children, growing old with the man I love." "That's not such a bad dream to have," Hawkeye said, smiling, "in fact, I would say it's perfect".
The next day after I had finished my work, I started to wander over to the mess tent. I knew that Hawkeye would be there because he finished half an hour before I did. We seemed to be spending every spare minute together. Margaret was jealous to death, she would love to have been as out in the open with Frank as what we were. As I entered the mess tent I saw Hawkeye straight away. I walked quickly over to him and planted a kiss right on his mouth. "Oh good, you're here", Hawkeye said as I sat down.
Just then, an announcement came over the PA. Attention, attention, we just had word, there's a ceasefire, I repeat, there is a ceasefire.
I looked at Hawk, he looked at me, and together we ran outside to see radar coming out of Col Potter's office. "Is it true?" Hawkeye asked. "Yes sir" radar said excitedly. "The Col has just had a call, it's official, were going home". Radar then hurried off to join in the celebrations.
Hawkeye was laughing, he looked like a child on Christmas morning, his face was alive. "You know what this means? We can get married". He picked me up and spun me round. "I can't wait for you to meet my dad". "Do you think he'll like me?" I asked looking down into Hawkeye's smiling face. "I think he'll love you". When my feet finally touched the floor I looked up at Hawk. "I have something for you". "What is it?" Hawkeye asked, I took his hand "come with me" I said. I led him toward the swamp, and opened the door for him to step inside. "What are we doing here?" Hawk asked. "Shhh" I put my finger to his lips. "I brought you here to give you your wedding gift, because this is where it was made". "I don't understand" Hawkeye said with a puzzled look on his face. I took his hand and placed it on my stomach. Tears started to come into his eyes as he began to realize what I was saying. "It's a good job we're getting married", I said with a small smile. And with that Hawk kissed me passionately. "Thank you", he said, tears spilling down his cheeks. "What for?" I asked, "for making me happier than I've ever been in my life. I thank God for this War, not for the destruction, I despise that, but for bringing me you. I love you Jen". And he kissed me again. "Let's go home".
