~***~

When Charlie arrived at Sawyer’s tent he could not find him. He called his name for a few times in case he was around somewhere but no one came. He decided to wait for him and sat down in front of the tent. He looked around bored trying to find something that might distract him from waiting. His gazed landed on Sawyer’s shirt in which pocket a corner of a photograph peered out. Charlie took it out.

It was him and Sawyer. Only him and Sawyer. No one else. They looked older maybe in their teens. They were both standing in front of Sawyer’s house smiling into the camera. Sawyer had an arm lay around Charlie’s shoulder while Charlie himself was smiling and was looking up to Sawyer.

Charlie didn’t remember that picture. He never had seen it until now. The day that picture was taken didn’t come into his mind. It was like this moment was erased or got lost. But why did he forget? The photo looked like it has been often taken out and watched. Apparently this picture was very important to Sawyer.

In that moment it occurred to Charlie. He now understood everything. He knew why Liam behaved so strangely after their parents died. He didn’t want Sawyer to be with Charlie because Liam knew what Charlie felt for Sawyer. At the beginning it was like friends’ love then it became more intense. He remembered crying whenever Liam would go to Sawyer and would leave him behind. Later Charlie showed his feelings with being stubborn and angry and furious at Liam. And the more he got angry and wanted to create distance to Liam the nearer Liam wanted to be to Charlie. That’s why Liam had lied to Charlie, told him that Sawyer had left because he hated Charlie. He never wanted to see him again.

Charlie put the picture back into its place and got to his feet. He had to think. This thought struck him hard. How could he have ever been so blind? He was about o go back into the jungle and was nearly out of earshot when he heard noises. Some screamed his name. He turned and wanted to go back. Suddenly Sawyer appeared out of nothing running and out of breath. He collapse onto the ground. Then he leaned against a pillar and took out a piece of paper.

Charlie didn’t move. He didn’t want to frighten Sawyer, he looked so deep in thoughts. He tried quietly to back away – but stepped on a twig. Sawyer jumped and looked in Charlie’s direction. Charlie knew that look. Those eyes. Those smooth moves. A long forgotten name came into his mind.

“I know your name.”, said Charlie with a silent and sad voice. “Adam.”

“What the hell are you doing here?”, snapped Sawyer with angry eyes.

Charlie didn’t move from his spot but stared at Sawyer with a hurt look.

“I… I wanted to know more. About Liam. And you.” He stopped. “Cause I remember now.”

“Well, that’s fantastic! The drug-addict has found his lost memory! Congratulations!” Sawyer was being sarcastic and Charlie’s eyes saddened more. “Now that we both know who we are you can fuck off and leave me alone!”

“Why were you screaming my name?”, asked Charlie suddenly looking to the ground. So he could not see that Sawyer was watching him carefully. Sawyer took a deep breath his eyes showing no sign of emotions. Neither anger nor…something else.

“I thought you were in trouble.”, he answered finally, trying to be calm. “If you want it that way: I was trying to save your life.”

“As you always did.”

Charlie’s answer came out as a whisper. He seemed talking to himself.

Sawyer’s eyes widened. “You really remember me…” A little smile spread on his face. “I think we have to talk after all, huh? Come on, sit down.”

Charlie sat down next to Sawyer, his shoulder touching slightly Sawyer’s.

“What do you know about Liam?”, was Charlie’s first question.

Sawyer looked down to the place where sea met land.

“He was a nice guy. Friendly, a real friend. You could always fool around with him. He helped me a lot to get over the death of my parents. He became my family.”

He turned to Charlie.

“I suppose he was the person you never got to know.”

Charlie shook his head.

“No. He was different towards me. He was keeping me away from things that might hurt me. Or not. He was too protective. He wouldn’t let me do anything alone. He was always there. He wasn’t there for me, but for himself. Liam always found a way to persuade me to do something for him. I hadn’t had the chance to know the real him. He wasn’t a good brother.”

Sawyer was quiet while Charlie was talking. Now was the chance to confront him with what Sawyer himself knew.

“But in the end you were beginning with the drugs. You let him down.”

Charlie looked up confused. “What? No! It was the other way round! Liam took them first and me next. I wanted to kill the pain that I felt.”

Sawyer passed him Liam’s last letter. “Then what the fuck does this mean? You say Liam was lying to me?”

Charlie quickly read through it. “This isn’t true… This is not true! Sawyer, believe me, I swear to God, it wasn’t me!”

“I shall believe you. Why? Gimme one good reason to trust you.”

Charlie stared at him with empty eyes. His heart was shrinking in his chest to the size of a nut. His muscles were getting weak. His eyes were telling the truth.

“Because he lied to me, too.”

Sawyer startled. “What did he say?”, he asked quietly.

Charlie rubbed a hand over his face. “He said that you left then because you didn’t want to spend time with me any longer. He said you hated me.”

“What makes you so sure he lied?”

“Because I saw your picture of us.” Charlie pointed at Sawyer’s shirt. “I never did get to see that photograph. I nearly don’t remember anything of you. But we look so happy on it. It just can’t be true. Or?” Charlie turned to Sawyer a look of sad hope on his face.

“No… No, I didn’t left because of you.”

Both fell silent for a moment, Sawyer could hear Charlie’s relieved sigh. It must be hard for him to find out the truth about Liam, his brother, his only relative, after so many years.

“So, why do you think Liam lied to me? To us. What was the reason him inventing such a story?”, asked Sawyer breaking the silence at last. He still was being calm and looked controlled.

“If I’m right then you already must know the answer to that question.” Charlie’s gaze became suddenly serious.

Sawyer suddenly jumped hearing that, stood up, fast and at once started shouting at Charlie.

“This is ridiculous! We’re getting nowhere with this conversation anyway! I’m even more confused than before! This all gets just too crazy!” He started pacing around breathing heavily. “I think you should go back to the caves. We’ve talked enough.”

But Charlie didn’t want to leave.

“I knew it was you. The moment the door cracked down. Liam wouldn’t have been able to go inside the house. I was hoping it was him but my mind said something else. It was always you. Liam was there, but you cared about me. And that’s the reason he kept me away from you. He didn’t want to come to know that you were a better brother than he would ever be.” Charlie sighed. “Yes, the memories come back slowly. After the fire his protective sense had got stronger. You saved me. And he didn’t. It never really let go of him. The day you left us forever I wasn’t at school. I was at my parents’ grave.”

“I know. I saw you.”, Sawyer suddenly interrupted Charlie. He was standing with his back to Charlie now. “Before I went to the airport I wanted to visit my parents, too. But then I saw you standing there. I turned and walked away.”

“I didn’t know you were there.” Charlie’s voice sounded surprised. “I was praying for you.”

Now Sawyer’s head turned around.

“Actually, for us both. That we would meet again. And it happened.” Charlie stood up and went over to Sawyer. “We are together again.”

But Sawyer backed away. “I can’t, Charlie. I… I am no good.”

“But you love me.” Charlie took one more step and closed the distance between them again.

Sawyer looked at him. Surprised, anxious, desperate, sad. Hopeful. But then his eyes changed quickly into an emotionless state again.

“Not very funny.” He began to walk away.

“You’re denying it? Why? It has been so obvious all these years! I’ve been watching you! You behaved different when I was around! You changed completely when you were with me – when I was with you!”

Sawyer kept on walking. Charlie fell into despair.

“You can’t just leave me alone again! I’ve been alone all my life! You’re the only one I have now! Don’t leave me!”

Charlie was crying loudly now, tears streaming down his face. Sawyer could hear him almost see him standing there on his own, all alone, with no one to kiss away his tears. But he didn’t turn around. He didn’t intent to go back. It would start all over. The moment Sawyer would open himself up to Charlie he would realize that Sawyer was no better than Liam. He wasn’t good for Charlie.

Sawyer sobbed inaudible for Charlie. It was better that way, he told himself. He blamed himself. He didn’t recognize Liam being the betrayer and deceiver. He beat Charlie up. He hurt him. He never wanted to do that again. He had disappointed the only person he had ever loved.

Sawyer put his hands into the pockets of his jeans and was walking down the beach. He suppressed the strong will of turning around for the last time.

“Adam! Please!”

Charlie screamed out his hopes, fears, anger and sadness. And suddenly Sawyer came to a halt. Charlie pled. Sawyer didn’t want that. He didn’t deserve to be pled by someone. Especially not by Charlie. In the distance, almost out of earshot he could hear Charlie shouting again. Silent and far a way at first then it became louder and clearer.

“I love you, Adam!”
