Chapter Three: Guilty By Association

******************

paper bags and angry voices
under a sky of dust

An all-to-familiar high pitched hum blossomed in his head and the sudden pain immobilized Clark. A dark angry piece of him fought and screamed viciously in denial, but he was frozen, powerless, as Chloe turned and walked away leaving him behind.

The hum faded as quickly as it came, leaving him empty and ringing with numbness. The sound of impatience caused him to turn and there was Lana.

A pissed Lana who dragged him off to the side of the hallway and berated him. Clark tried to process what she was saying. It was becoming obvious what had fueled her anger towards him and a surge of jealousy was eagerly absorbed by the guilt he carried.

He embraced the pain because he knew everything was all his fault. No matter how hard he tried, hurt seemed to encase him like a second skin. He revowed to protect her. Especially from himself. So he mouthed sounds she seemed to accept and he walked away.

His footsteps led him to the Torch’s office, and suddenly the hum squealed back into existence. Clark bared his teeth in agony and clapped his hands over his ears. He ran the last few steps to the doorway and as soon as he crossed the threshold the noise blessedly stopped.

The sight before him dealt him another blow and froze him in his tracks. Stunned he could only stare at Chloe.

She was on her knees, bowed as if a great pressure forced her down, but she was twisting, reaching up. Chloe glowed with blinding light as she shook uncontrollably and her mouth opened and breathed his name.
