Hereafter

Chapter 3- Rewrite of a scene out of “Hereafter”: Chloe is doing some snooping on Lana’s new friend Adam. Having broken into his apartment above the Talon, she peers under the bed looking for clues.

Lex let himself into the apartment. After all, it was hardly breaking and entering when he owned the place, right? He turned to look into the bedroom and saw Chloe Sullivan’s ass up in the air… she appeared to be rooting around underneath the bed. He ignored the small voice that wonders how he knew it was Chloe. The girl had a nice body. He had noticed. That was the end of it. Lex took a quiet breath and refocused his brain.

“Last I heard, breaking and entering were still against the law.” His voice came out calm and smug though he was feeling a bit startled to find her here. He seemed to be feeling that way around her a lot lately. A mental flash of her standing over him, looking at him in lust stole through his brain. He pushed it aside and focused on her.
She jumped in surprise and scrambled to her feet, body tensed for a fight. It was something of a compliment to see her relax a fraction when she realized it was him.

“I could say the same thing to you.” Her voice was crisp and clear, with just a hint of a sneer... so much attitude. God, she must drive his father nuts.

“Except I own the place. I take it you have some concerns about Lana's new friend.” He strolled closer to her, wondering just what it was she had hidden behind her back.

“Renter’s still have privacy rights, even from the owner’s of the buildings they live in. And I think it’s pretty obvious I don’t trust Adam in the slightest.”

“Why is that, Chloe?” Lex asked, strolling around the room and looking at the walls and surfaces, not really sure what he was looking for.

“Because my instincts are screaming he’s bad news. Pretty boys who can push Lana’s buttons so easily rarely fall from the sky. Or rehabilitation as the case may be.” Her voice was sarcastic and she turned her body towards his as he walked, keeping him in her line of vision. A plan hatched in his brain. “What made you go all cloak and dagger?” She asked.

Chloe was just the kind of woman who resented being pushed... the kind of woman who would dig in her heels and be stubborn even if she was the one who paid the price. Chloe would be far more likely to come clean if he didn’t push. So he turned his back just enough to make her feel safe and watched her slide something into her purse.

“Rachmaninoff.” He picked up a slide and peered at it, wondering why the hell Adam had slides of medical paraphernalia in his apartment. “When Adam came to see me earlier today, he was playing one of his most difficult pieces.”

“Was he now? How interesting.” Chloe looks around the room, frowning.

“I know,” he says in response to her silent query. “No CDs, sheet music. Not even a radio. According to his transcripts, he never took a single music class.” He stepped closer to her and catches a whiff of her perfume... something spicy. She looked up at him, her eyes guarded. He handed her the slide before backing away and moving across the room.

“So computers, kickboxing, and a master pianist. Wow. Adam's a regular renaissance man.” The disbelief in her voice made Lex smile.

“None of these things make him a criminal.” Lex said softly. Chloe rolled her eyes at his words and Lex was inwardly delighted. She was naïve, though not as naïve as she had been when he first met her. She was smart and getting smarter. She was tenacious and getting sexier with every passing day. Lex froze. She was not sexy. Not in the slightest. Because she was seventeen. And no amount of cute pixie hair and brass-balled reporter sass was going to make up for that.

“Though it certainly piqued your interest.”

His attention snapped back to the moment at hand and he smiled slightly... best to leave Chloe to her devices.

“Lock up on your way out.” Lex said, giving her tacit permission to remain in the apartment. He expected a certain smugness and maybe a little excitement in her reaction. Instead, she stared at him, weighing more than just his motivations, weighing him whole, before nodded solemnly. Lex strolled out. Chloe Sullivan was far more interesting than he had ever given her credit for.
