CHAPTER THREE
Cringing at her words Jane thought to herself “Oh my god. Earth just open up and swallow me now”.
Once the window was opened Jane walked back to John waiting patiently.
“Close your eyes.” he instructed.
Thinking to herself “this could be very interesting”
“Listen to where I am” stated John while circling her. “Sense where I am.”
Judging where John was seemed to be more difficult than expected. Even if he did always seem to be able to sneak up on her in the past.
Guessing Jane was doing as instructed he quickly brushed his hand along her lower back, causing her to flinch, and recoil to the side out of reach.
“Listen to the sound of my breathing” “Keep far enough away to react ahead of time.”
Mentally scolding herself for being caught off guard Jane prepared for another advance on John’s part.
Noticing that she was now focusing entirely decided to see how she would handle a surprise attack. Crouching down behind Jane he quickly lunged at her landing in a roll on the ground with him taking the impact completely holding on tight to prevent her from getting harmed.
Feeling a sudden impact Jane let out a small scream before being pulled to the ground landing on top of John, who continued the roll pinning Jane under himself triumphantly grinning.
“I guess I need some more work on that huh?” grinned Jane sheepishly.
“You need to feel,” John said moving his weight off of her and crouching directly beside her. But when she started to get up he put a hand on her shoulder to keep her on the floor. “Relax,” he whispered. “Close your eyes,” he demanded. Very gently with his fingertips he traced his fingers down her arm. “Feel that?” he asked. “Yes,” Jane answered every hair on her arm standing on end. His hands had an electrifying effect on her skin. “Feel things move around you,” John said. Moving his fingers slightly above her skin she could feel the warmth of him, but not his touch. He skimmed his hand over her bare stomach. “Feel that?” he asked. “Yes,” Jane answered, breathing in as slowly as possible to fight the incredible tingle that went wherever his hands did. Moving his face above hers and holding himself over her with out touching, he turned his head slightly and whispered in her ear, “Feel that?” “Yes,” she breathed back barely a whisper. His hair bushed her cheek and she turned slightly toward it. Seeing her movement John skimmed his cheek down the side of her own. Her eyes flew open and seeing her tense he pulled back and then pulled her to her feet.
“Now again, feel,” he said, closing her eyes with his fingertips and walking her toward the bare wall, holding one of her hands. Moving very slowly as she got right up to the wall she realized she could feel a change in the air pressure and she stopped. “Good,” John said. “Again, with your feet,” he said turning her the opposite direction. Of course she knew where things were in her apartment. This shouldn’t be too hard. But how far was it from here to the couch? She had never actually counted the steps. She took two normal steps and then slowed. “Feel,” he demanded. Sliding one foot slowly forward she concentrated on what was under her feet. Hard wood floor here. Edge of the carpet there. There it was again, that same slight change in the air pressure. Smiling with her eyes closed she turned around and sat squarely on the couch pleased with herself. “Very good,” John smiled and stroked her cheek with his fingertips.
Grabbing his wrist she caught him off guard and pulled him down onto the couch next to her. “OK, Mr. Know-It-All, I need to look where I am going, stay balanced, focus, and I need to feel what is around me, what else is on that lesson plan of yours?” she said tauntingly. “Smell,” he said. “Why do I need to practice what I smell?” Jane asked curiously. She definitely didn’t mind learning what John had to teach, but she wanted to know why smell was important. “To hunt,” he replied shortly. “I guess I hunt in my job sometimes, but I don’t hunt much in my apartment,” she commented. Taking her by the hand and pulling her back out the front door he stood in the hallway outside and exaggeratedly smelled before he turned the handle to come back in. When the door was slightly ajar he inhaled again, looking at her out of the corner of his eye to make sure she was watching. “Seek, what is inside,” he said walking through the door.
“John, I just don’t think my sense of smell is as good as yours,” Jane said with a slight frown. “I may be able to tell an orange from an apple if I was blindfolded, but I don’t think I could tell a person by their scent,” she continued. Stepping inside the doorway, she was surprised when John turned around in fronther her and reached one long arm over her shoulder to shut the door. Cocking his head to the side he moved slowly toward her neck and hair and drew in a deep breath. Feeling his exhale on her skin she shivered but did not back up. “Jane,” he said for emphasis. Leaning forward she did what she knew he wanted and leaned into his neck and hair breathing in the musky spicy scent that came from his clean skin and hair. She knew that memories were strongly linked to smell and she let her mind wander as she leaned her head on his jaw. He smelled like sunlight, and fresh air, and something she didn’t know how to describe except as power.
Finally breaking away from him she smiled and said, “OK, I got it. I know your scent, and I doubt anyone else smells exactly the same, but John, I think that the best I can hope to smell from a distance is colognes or aftershaves.” Thinking of some of the situations her job put her in she commented more to herself she continued, “That may actually come in helpful in the future.”
Back in the apartment, John lead her to the opened window.
“Smell” John instructed. Looking at him questioningly Jane did as instructed. Not sure exactly what she was supposed to be smelling other than the usual exhaust mixed with tonight’s muggy air that is she said “I don’t get it. What am I supposed to be smelling?”
“Close your eyes, and relax.” Holding his arms out the window John said “Feel the air. What is different?”
Doing as instructed, Jane noticed that the air had a hint of coolness to it, with a slight fresh feel to it almost like rain.
Just as she thought that, a rain drop landed on her arm sending a shiver straight through her body in response to the sudden coolness.
Looking at John, she saw a knowing grin was staring down at her. “Yah yah, I get it. You knew it was going to rain.” stated Jane. During this time more rain drops had landed on her body, one of which had landed on her nose. Noticing this John reached over slowly, and wiped it off causing Jane to close her eyes do to the sudden rush of feelings and the warmth of his skin on hers.
Sensing Jane was not unhappy with his contact, John leaned down and placed a feather light kiss on her lips. To his surprise, and total pleasure Jane did not pull away. Instead she gently returned the kiss while placing a hand on his shirt png hng him slightly closer, before realizing what she was actually doing.
Once the window was opened Jane walked back to John waiting patiently.
