Chapter 2
Fifteen minutes later they were back in the black as Serenity broke atmo and they were back underway with Mal's promise to Kaylee that he would get her an aft proximity sensor array, if it didn't cost too much, which he knew it did. He had left Kaylee in the engine room. She wanted to run some more diagnostics to make sure everything was ship shape and he'd said he'd send someone with some chow. He new a certain young doctor that wouldn't be too hard to convince to perform that little task. Mal smiled and whistled a little ditty as he made his way back to the galley.
He noticed that everyone else was in the galley besides Kaylee and River, even his favourite whore had daned to join them for their evening meal. "Why do I do that?" he asked himself looking at the Companion, who was talking to Book, as he headed over to Simon, not really expecting an answer he was prepared to face. The darn gin sun tuc women irked him, but in that good way that was just so fu gu gow inconvenient and irritating.
He rested his hand on the young doctors shoulder. "What's up, Doc?" he asked knowing that the humor of that particular greeting was entirely lost on anyone on his ship with the possible exception of Book and, of course, Inara and she'd just call him childish. He continued even as Simon started to answer, "Kaylee's a bit reluctant to leave the engine room right now. You know women and their stardrives, an' all. So, I was wonderin' if you'd be so kind as to take her some supper? I'm sure she'd be ever so appreciative... for the food and... I reckon... the company. I can ask Jayne if you're busy, but he appears to be trying to fit an entire chicken in his mouth in one go at the moment." He asked the young doctor while nodding to Jayne who grunted back at him through a mouthful of chicken.
He patted Simons' shoulder as the doctor sputtered his answer of assent to Mal's request. He stepped back with a badly concealed grin as the doctor got up hastily, taking his plate and moving into the kitchen proper to fix a plate for Kaylee. Inara gave him a withering look and he put on the most innocent expression he could. "What?" he asked with a shrug and then grinned openly. She just shook her head and continued to take dainty bites from her salad. "One day that boy's gonna put you flat on your ass, Mal." Book told him looking up from his own meal and Inara nodded. "Sure. When Reavers turn vegetarian." Mal retorted before heading to the kitchen to get something to eat.
In the corridor just outside the engine room, Simon was surprised to find his sister waiting for him. He frowned. She was holding something behind her back and had a mysterious smile, well a more mysterious smile than usual, on her face. When he drew level with her in the corridor she stepped aside to let him pass. "What is it, Mei Mei?" he asked, but she didn't answer. Her smile did widen and then she revealed what she was hiding behind her back. It turned out to be a large flower, something akin to a sunflower, but a brilliant red with a violet centre. "For me?" he queried wondering where she had got it, the logical answer to which was the planet they had just left, but that left the how she'd got it. She shook her and then nodded to the closed engine room door before placing the flower on the tray he carried. She nodded more vigorously at the door to emphasise her point and only stopped when he started to move forward. "Okay. Okay." He conceded. She grinned at him and then skipped down the corridor in the direction from which he'd come. He shook his head at his sisters' actions, but had to concede that Kaylee would love the gift and tapped the button to open the door with his elbow.
When Mal got back to the table Book and Jayne had already finished eating and were nowhere to be seen which left him alone with Inara. He took a deep breath and once again admonished himself to be civil. Her plate was empty and she was sipping at a glass of wine, in an actual wine goblet he noticed. The deep red of the wine was only a shade or two darker than her full lips. He took a loud slurping sip from the coffee he'd poured himself knowing it would irk the Companion and was gratified to see her eyes narrow slightly, It was childish and he knew it, but he figured all he needed to do was chew with his mouth open and she'd either leave or be the one to start their verbal sparring. He never had the chance to, because River came skipping into the mess.
He was fond of the girl, but she bothered him some. The way she looked at him sometimes, it was like she knew what was going on in his head. He frowned. She had a flower in her hand that looked suspicious like the ones he'd seen growing on the planet they'd just left. The planet that he had specifically told everyone besides himself, Kaylee and Jayne not to step foot on. "River, could you come here, please." He asked the girl in a conversational tone returning his attention to his meal. She came closer, but gave Mal a fairly wide berth. "That's a mighty pretty flower you have there, a nice shade of red. Where'd you get it?" he continued in the same conversational tone. "Just a little closer." He thought. The girl grinned and Mal again got that impression that she had heard what he was thinking.
He could see Inara's lips twitching with suppressed amusement. He didn't think the brat could move that fast. One moment he was waiting for her to take the step closer he needed to make a grab for her and the next she darted forward and placed the flower on the table between Inara and himself. He had hardly even put down his fork and she had already sped off, heading for the exit behind Inara. "River Tam!" he fairly roared noting that Inara was no longer pretending to hide her amusement. The girl actually had the temerity to pop her grinning head back into the doorway. Her expression turned serious and she nodded vigourously at Inara's back. He was so surprised he must have frowned which in turn made Inara frown. But, when she turned to see what he was looking at River had already disappeared.
Back in the engine room Simon greeted Kaylee with a nod and a smile before putting down the tray on the first flat surface he could find. He lifted the strange flower from the tray and presented it to the mechanic with an exaggerated bow. She smiled and gave him a surprisingly courtly curtsey before she reached to accept the flower.
For, just a moment, they both held on the stem and neither noticed the puff of silvery dust that shot from the centre of the flower itself. He let go and she brought the flower to her nose to smell. "Pretty. Thank you." she told him. He smiled back awkwardly and then sneezed. They both laughed.
When their laughter subsided she directed him to two empty crates and they positioned them as seats to make the surface he had placed the tray on into a table for their dinner. They ate and chatted and laughed, enjoying each other's company. Simon thought that Kaylee looked especially beautiful in the soft yellow light of the engine room and she found her eyes drawn to his lips and wondering what they would taste like. Not, that she hadn't had the thought before, but now she found herself barely able to control the urge to find out.
Simon thought Kaylee's smile was sweet and he suddenly wondered if her lips would be too. He blinked at the thought. "Is it getting hot in here." Both of them blurted out at the same time filling the silence that neither had noticed. They grinned at their strange synchronicity. They both looked down and Simon jerked his hand away. "Err... I..." he tried to explain. He had been holding her hand in his and been stroking the strangely smooth calluses where her fingers met her palm with his thumb. He could clearly remember the feeling, but had no idea when or how he had taken her hand. She seemed as surprised as he was.
She stopped him from saying any more by rising and holding up her hand. "I believe I got just the thing to cool us down some." She told him and turned and headed deeper into the engine room while admonishing him not to go anywhere. His eyes were drawn to her ass and the feminine sway of her hips. He hadn't quite noticed how shapely it really was and how good they looked in her overalls. He wondered how they would feel and actually flexed his hands as if he was cupping them. His thoughts and actions shocked him and what further alarmed him was the tightening in his pants as he began to develop a erection.
He wanted to get out of there and at the same time he wanted, well he wanted her. When he put aside his logic and all the other arguments he had come up with since he had first met the petite, dark-haired mechanic he had to admit to himself that he wanted her. She had made no secret of her interest either, so why should he deprive them both of what they both wanted. He reached down and adjusted himself for more comfort and waited for her to return.
Kaylee could feel his eyes like a caress on her ass and she liked that he was paying her that kind of attention. It was about time. She added a little extra sway to her step, accentuating her hips, giving him a show. "Was tonight the night?" she asked herself. She actually felt herself becoming moist at the thought. She turned in behind the engine and out of his line of sight. She stopped sauntering and hurried, unlatching a panel and then turned the handle on it. The panel rose with cold steam writhing out of it. She reached behind the wiring it contained and extricated a silver bottle. She smiled, glad that she had stashed it, instead of selling it the last time they had been planet-side.
She closed the panel, but instead of returning to Simon she took some time to give herself the appearance she desired and hopefully the one he would too. She unbuttoned and shrugged out of the top of her overalls, knotting the arms loosely around her waist. She took off the dermapatch he had put on her forehead. The cut had already healed. She loosened her hair and shook it out. She'd let it grow longer than she had thought as she looked at herself in the scrap of mirror she had stuck to the bulkhead. She thought it looked fetching as she shook her head and the luxurious mass of dark curls cascaded about her face. She wore a white vest under her overall which was now exposed with the top half undone and around her waist. She looked in the direction in which Simon was, Serenity's engine, hiding him from view and bit her lower lip. "What the hell." She thought. "For once, he'd started it and she sure intended to finish it." With, a little bit of a struggle she managed to unhook and remove her bra. She didn't have as much as Inara had in that department, but a gal had to use what the Gnu Gwa Gin gave her.
She adjusted her breasts for the best effect. The material of the vest rubbed against her nipples, making them harden. She smiled to herself and then her smile turned to a sly grin as she took the chilled container and held it close to her chest. The cold radiated from it and her nipples sprang to attention. She kicked her discarded bra into a corner and then with a last glance at her reflection she headed back to Simon.
Simon had to keep adjusting himself. He couldn't keep his mind off Kaylee's ass. No ass should look that good in utility wear. He fidgeted, feeling a strange awkwardness at Kaylee's absence. He half got up several times to follow her, the need to be in her proximity, the urge to touch her was so overwhelming, but it warred with the thought of disobeying her. He undid his collar and then the button below it in an attempt to breath easier. He kept replaying the feel of the skin of her hand on his fingers and wondered what the rest of her skin might feel like. He remembering how nice she smelled and wondered what she'd taste like.
When she reappeared from behind Serenity's engine he felt slightly more at ease which was even more confusing considering the thoughts that intensified in his mind as his eyes roamed over her. She had loosened her hair and it created a dark halo around her head and shoulders that shifted mesmerizingly with each step she took. She had also stripped out of half her overalls that gave her the perfect mixture of sexy and cute that made his dick twitch and his balls tighten. One other thing was also extremely apparent: she wasn't wearing a bra. Sometime earlier his brain had registered that she had been wearing one, but now she wasn't. His hands itched to reach out and touch the little, sharply-defined peaks of her nipples and the soft curved slope of her breasts from which they pressed out and swayed slightly against the white vest she wore.
She liked the way he was looking at her. She could see the hunger in his eyes that she'd seen in other men that had wanted her. She had longed to see that look from him. She felt her body start to tingle under his gaze and when he stood she felt her insides surge as she saw the ample bulge in the front of his trousers
He licked suddenly dry lips and wasn't sure when he stood up, but when she reached him, he was standing. She held up and shook a metal bottle in front of his face with a smile. It was the smile that did he thought, along time after. He pushed her hand and the bottle from between them and the swept her into his arms and kissed her.
