Chapter two
Any time tomorrow I will lie and say I'm fine
I'll say yes when I mean no
And any time tomorrow
The sun will cease to shine
There's a shadowman who told me so
“K’s choice – Shadowman”
The screaming voice of the woman startled George, watching her crying and kicking while she was lying on the bed. He felt a shiver of dread and nervousness run down his spine when someone passed him, knocking into him, catching him of guard. His eyes moved over the image before him. Dr. Sheperd standing beside the bed of the young woman who was now verbally assaulting the doctors around her bed without caring. He stepped back, biting on the skin of his cheek, wondering what to do. Dr. Bailey caught his eyes, making him look down at the woman who was staring at him with a stern look. Her eyes mentioned for him to get lost, wanting him to leave the room of the young enraged woman. It didn’t take George much time to leave the room, closing the door behind him and sighing in both disappointment and relief.
“I swear that woman is loony, she belongs in the psych ward.”
George blinked a couple of times, pulling himself together, before looking at the man who had just spoken. When he saw standing Alex Karev standing in the hall a: “Huh?” escaped from his lips, but that was all.
Alex smirked, looking at George with an amused look in his hazel eyes. He pushed a finger against the window of the woman’s room George had just left and glanced at the screaming woman who was slowly calming down. “That woman...” He explained before turning to look at George again. He chuckled when he was once again met by the dull and confused look in George’s eyes. “Talking to you is like talking to a trash can.” Alex decided then and passed the brunette, shaking his head in amusement.
George watched him leave before frowning, his nose wrinkling slightly when Alex turned around the corner. “Why is he talking to me...” George whispered to himself. He started walking, going the opposite direction of Alex. With his head deep in thought he walked through the halls of the hospital. The brunette took his time, not sure where to do now that Dr. Bailey had dismissed him. Then he suddenly stopped walking, realizing that in the afternoon there would be an important surgery that he didn’t want to miss. He looked on his watch, frowning when he saw that it was all ready one a clock. He abruptly turning around, only to find that that had been the wrong thing to do. He felt his stomach drop and his heart skip a beat at the sight of Callie walking down the hall, looking through some files. George stepped sideways, closing his eyes in a attempt for Callie not to notice him.
“George what are you doing?”
The brunette’s eyes shot open, turning around to see that Callie had passed and that Christina was sending him a strange look. He shifted a little nervously. “Ah..., nothing.” He answered, laughing nervously.
Christina sighed. “Sure, all right let’s go..., they are about to operate and Meredith’s scrubbing in.” The raven haired woman told him, giving him one last strange look before she started walking, knowing that George would come with her. She glanced sideways at the man and put her hands in her pockets. “Are you sure you are all right George?” She asked.
George nodded quietly.
“This is a one time offer to talk, so talk.” Christina said.
The brunette man frowned, knowing that that was probably true. He smiled a little sheepishly and glanced sideways at the woman. “I just saw Alex today..., it looked like he was trying to start a conversation.” He muttered.
“So?” Christina asked, completely missing the point.
George sighed. “He’s Alex.” He said, realizing it was not much of a argument. “And well..., he’s never really talked to us before.” He added, muttering. George didn’t look at Christina, knowing she would found his arguments childish and that she would brush them aside within seconds.
“I am Christina..., I didn’t talk to any of you in the beginning.” She said and her words were followed by a soft huffing laugh. “Well..., I did, but I didn’t want too.” The raven haired woman continued, stopping in front of the elevators. She pushed the button, listening to the sound of the elevator changing floors until a ‘beep’ let them knew it was on their floor, the elevator doors sliding open. “Maybe he’s just..., I don’t know,” Christina started, stepping into the elevator. “Trying to be nice or something...”
George snorted. “Alex? Nice?” He laughed a little, sending an amused and incredible unbelieving look Christina’s way. “Yeah, right.”

Alex slumped, his arms lying across the bar while he held a empty glass in his hand. He looked at it, his hazel eyes never leaving the empty thick glass. All though drowning your sorrow’s was not good it felt fucking great, at least that was what Alex decided. “Another one, Joe.” He muttered, looking at the bartender. But as quickly as the glass was filled it was also drowned by Alex. He put it back on the counter, a little harder then he had intended to do. “Another one...” He whispered, letting his eyes fall to the surface beneath his glass. He kept his eyes on it, Alex continued staring, not even caring when someone sat down beside him.
“Hey...” Came a soft voice.
Alex shuddered, warmth running down his spine at the voice of the woman who was sitting down beside him. He glanced her way, taking in her sight. Her blonde curls were pulled back in a pony tail, her grey eyes resting on him and her eyelids were covered in a light blue colour. The brunette sat up, smirking at the woman. “Hello.” He greeted her, his voice slightly slurred. “Joe, offer the woman a drink!” He said and then pointed towards himself. “And I want another one too...”
The woman looked at Alex, smiling sweetly. “I’m Christa.” She told him, holding out her hand for him. The blonde couldn’t help but laugh a little when he wasn’t able to take her hand right away, instead missing it completely.
“Alex.” Alex said, shaking her hand. He looked up at the woman, grinning when she smiled at him and thanked him for offering her a drink.
Neither noticed the pair of interns entering the emerald city bar. George looked around, hearing Izzie comment on something about the bar beside him. Meredith seemed to reply and the two of them started laughing. The brunette frowned, confusion showing in his light blue eyes when he noticed Alex and a unknown woman sitting at the bar. “There’s Alex.” He said before noticing the three women were all ready sitting down nearby. He walked over to them, glad that no one had seen him talking to people that weren’t even there. George sat down beside Meredith, keeping his eyes on Alex and the blonde woman.
“George?”
The brunette looked up when he heard Izzie’s voice. “Yes?” He asked, sitting up, startled. His eyes wandered to Alex again, wondering what the other was doing with the blonde woman. All though it was kind of obvious that they were flirting together..., so knowing Alex it wasn’t so difficult to know what would happen.
“Will you get drinks for us?” Izzie asked. Adding a pouting: “Please.”
George pushed himself up. He didn’t mind getting drink for them, it would give him time to ask what Alex was doing at the emerald city bar and find out who the blonde woman was who was with him. “Beer?” He asked, receiving nods from the other’s. The brunette slowly walked towards the bar, taking his time. He felt his heart hammering in his chest, nervous to go and see Alex. Normally he wouldn’t have cared but after Alex’s weird changes to try and talk to him and the talk with Christina made him wonder about how much they really knew about Alex. And not knowing someone, making them unpredictable, made George nervous.
He leaned against the bar, Alex’s back turned towards him while standing beside the brunette. “Alex?” George tried, watching the other turn around. “What are you doing here?” He asked then.
Alex watched the familiar brunette. At first he had been annoyed to hear someone calling his name, interrupting the conversation he was having with Christa. But when seeing that it was George he smiled sheepishly, trying to keep himself straight. “Drinking.” He stated, frowning. “What are you doing here?” He asked then, watching the other shift around nervously. He wondered why the other was acting so strangely but Alex decided that it must have been the use of alcohol that just made him think that George was even more nervous and strange then normal.
“Pretty much the same.” George laughed nervously, fidgeting. “If we’d known that you would’ve gone to the bar you could’ve come with us.” He said, watching the other man. When he saw the hint of amusement in Alex’s eyes he was sure that the other was going to use this for another trademark reply. When Alex didn’t he frowned, confused.
“Thanks but..., I’m fine going alone.” Alex said. ‘Didn’t want to bother you guys...’ He added to himself, not saying the words. At least he hadn’t been to far gone to say things that George didn’t need to know.
George took a moment to tell Joe what they wanted before turning to Alex again. “It’s all right if you want to join us now...” He said and heard the woman beside Alex clear her throat to draw their attention. He ignored her, shifting a little uncomfortable before sitting down beside the other man. “It would be fine..., I know Christina can be very scary..., but she’s very nice.”
Alex started laughing, closing his eyes in amusement and leaning slightly backwards. “That’s funny George!” Alex said in a slurry voice.
“How much did you have to drink?” George asked, watching the other sceptically. He raised an eyebrow, parting his lips so speak again. “And how drunk are you?”
Alex shrugged. “Ah..., I didn’t drink that much and I’m not that drunk.” He said, nodding to himself.
A third voice joined, Joe. He looked at Alex with a concerned face. “He had enough I’d say,” He started and then turned to look at George. “Alex has been here for a while.” The man behind the bar decided, offering George four glasses of beer.
“Thanks Joe, put it on the check...” The younger one said, keeping his worried eyes on Alex. “Do you think that maybe I should bring you home?” George asked after a while, wondering if he even wanted to bring Alex home. They weren’t friend, an he didn’t even help his friends coming back home. Well, except for Meredith and Izzie, since they lives in the same house.
Alex shook his head. “Nah..., I have Christa here to talk with, I don’t want to go home.”
Christa smiled, showing herself to George. “Yes, and if someone needs to take him home I can always take him home.” She offered with a sweet smile. Her eyes were filled with annoyance but only George seemed to notice.
George knew she was trying to get him to leave, probably wanting to take Alex straight home and George knew for what. He shook his head. “No thank you Christa.” He muttered, looking at Alex. Alex on the other hand thought it was a good idea, telling Christa that he wouldn’t mind her coming home with him but George quickly dismissed that idea. “There’s no need, I don’t feel like staying anyway, and this way I can go.” He lied. The shorter one had actually been looking forward to having a night out, they had finished a thirty hour shift and he had really wanted to enjoy a beer and relax with the girls.
Alex pushed himself up, stumbling and bumping into George. He held himself up against the smaller one, looking into George’s eyes. He grinned, looking down at the other. In his drunken state he tried to straighten things in his mind, deciding that he didn’t really mind that George would take him home. He was tired and going home alone wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do. All though he hadn’t mind if Christa had taken him home either.
George send a apologetic glance to the table with the three woman, who had all ready noticed his long absence and were now watching the situation displaying before them. The blonde sitting in the middle waved at him, letting him know it was fine and that they would see him later at home. Or at least that was what George hoped it meant. He wrapped an arm around Alex’ waist, keeping him up with a little difficulty. “Why do you have to be so heavy.” He muttered.
The blonde woman who had been trying to hook up with Alex glared at George. “I really don’t mind taking him home.” She said a last time, George shaking his head to dismiss her offer. She pushed herself up, straightening her skirt and taking off with a huff, insulted by George’s dismissal.

The ride was spend mostly in silence, George driving in Alex’ car, knowing that Meredith needed her own to get home herself. Alex was sitting beside him, his cheek resting against the cold window, staring outside. The brunette could see lights reflecting in the large hazel orbs. “You shouldn’t get that drunk...” George decided, continuing when Alex said nothing. “It’s not good for you.” He added a little dully, knowing it would never be a good enough argument.
Alex sat up, turning his head to look at George. “How the fuck do you know what’s good for me.” He spat.
George stopped at a red light, glancing at Alex, taken aback by the other’s sudden outburst. “I was just-“
“Well don’t!” Alex interrupted him. “You don’t know anything about me, none of you even care to find out anything about me.” He continued, rattling on. “So what gives you the right to say anything...” The brunette continued, in his drunken state not knowing how to stop even though he wouldn’t have even said these words if he had been sober. “All you see if what you want to see..., but you never see me.”
“Alex..., that’s not true.” George tried but he knew that it was true. The brunette had tried to talk to him before but he hadn’t really cared, thinking it was not Alex to do such a thing. He had even told Christina that it was not like Alex to do such a thing, but he it seemed that he had been wrong.
Alex shook his head. “Fuck you, George.” He exclaimed. “You don’t know what’s true...” Alex closed his eyes, letting his head fall against the seat. He felt his blood pumping through his veins, angry at George for even thinking that he knew him. No one knew him, not really. They all saw him as the residential playboy, the bad boy or the rude guy. No one ever took the time to think about the other side of him. They all seemed to think he didn’t have feelings, like he was some cold bastard.
“Well then maybe,” George started, all ready regretting it. “maybe you should tell us.”
Alex snorted. “Tell you about what..., about my fucked up life!?” He yelled, becoming more vocal with every word he said. “That my fucked up father used to beat my mom..., are that the things you want to know! That he was a drug addict! That he fucked her every night even when she didn’t want too!...That he left us!” Before realizing what was happening, angry tears spilled down Alex’ cheeks. “Is that what you want to know, George?”
In the middle of Alex ranting the other man had parked the car beside the street, having turned into a small street. “Alex...” He whispered, not even sure what to say. The other’s bitter words had taken him aback, knowing that those things weren’t facts you wished to share with anyone.
“Don’t...” Alex breathed. His chest was heaving, his breathing ragged and his cheeks flustered, tears running down. “Fucking don’t you dare to pity me, O’malley...” Alex hissed through clenched teeth. “I don’t need it...drive...”
George bit on his lower lip. “But.” He whispered then, wanting to somehow apologize for wanting Alex to talk, or at least let him know he felt bad for Alex after hearing things that he hadn’t even thought about. He had never guessed that Alex had dealt with such things. Then again..., he had never known much about Alex.
“Drive!” Alex yelled.
Both remained quiet after that, driving to Alex’s home. The only sound that could be heard in the car was that of Alex’ shaken breathing, trying to relax but finding it very difficult to do so with the realisation that he had just told George things that he had never wanted to tell anyone.
