Jack immediately took care of Charlie the moment him and Kate came back. The people at the caves were shocked and furious about Sawyer’s aggressive attack about actually nothing at all. Charlie was badly injured, but nothing irreparable. He would be ok in a few days, Jack had assured to him. But he simply couldn’t understand what had gotten into Sawyer!

“No, Jack, listen, it was a misunderstanding, that’s all! And by the way, I hit him first. It was just normal the way he reacted…”

“That’s not a solution, Charlie! He can see that you’re smaller. He’s just playing off.”

Ok, Charlie wasn’t small! He was still in a growing process. Alright, Sawyer was taller, but he’s even taller than Jack, wasn’t he? He’s a…giant! That’s what he was!

“No, I don’t believe that! He was just pissed off with something and he met me first and let out all his anger on me. It was an accident!”

Jack looked at Charlie and seemed to begin to understand.

“Charlie, he’s not good for you.”

Jack finished putting the bandage on Charlie’s arm, patted him encouragingly on the shoulder and went over to Sajid.

Charlie was still sitting on the little rock near the waterfall. He had defended Sawyer. For what reason? It was so obvious that Sawyer had started the fight, even if you didn’t know the details. He was the badass of their community. Everyone would have believed Charlie if he had told them what had really happened. But he had lied. He had used language to knowingly tell the untruth. He had protected Sawyer. For beating the shit out of him.

Jack of course didn’t really believe Charlie. He was sure that Sawyer had been the trigger to all of this. He and Sajid went therefore to Sawyer’s tent at the beach to talk to him and find out the reason for his aggressiveness. It couldn’t just be about that damn diary!
There was more.

Arriving at the tent they called out for Sawyer but he wasn’t “at home”. So both men took the opportunity to have a closer look at the things Sawyer had been hiding since they landed on the island. There was lots of useful stuff like medicine, books and private things (like Claire’s diary which Jack immediately put into his shirt pocket) and there were also cables and batteries. These were things the survivors needed very much!

“Gee, if he does something he’ll do it properly!” Jack whistled through his teeth.

While Jack was now paying attention in case Sawyer would return Sajid was checking through the rest.

“Jack, look at this.”

Sajid passed him a black box, covered with magazine pictures and headlines of Driveshaft. In the middle of it there was a big “L” readable, cut out of newspaper and glued on top of the lid.

“Could be Charlie’s.”

Sawyer had been lingering around the caves, hiding up high in a tree to have a better view. Man, how did he get up here? He looked down worriedly and wondered how he would be able to get down again. But Jack caught his attention suddenly who had returned with Sajid from the beach. They carried some things, he could make out as cables and little bottles. Dammit! They’ve looked through his things! He could hear them now talking, Jack asked for Charlie. But he wasn’t there. Sawyer had seen him walk away right after Jack had cured him.

Well, it was time to get off that damn tree, he had seen and heard enough for today, but how to get down? Slowly, silent as possible and step by step he climbed down. The nearer he was to the ground the better he could hear them talking.

“…box is Charlie’s, I think.”, Sawyer could make out Jack saying.

“Did you open it?”, Kate asked.

“No, of course not. It looks much too private. I think I will pack it in his guitar case. It will give him a merry surprise to see he’s got it back.”, Jack answered smiling.

“You like Charlie, don’t you?”

“Well, I’ve never had a brother. But I think I’ve got one now. Yes, I like him. I’m worried about him.”

Kate smiled and patted him on the shoulder.

Sawyer had finally managed to get off the tree and was now hiding behind it. Too much going on now. He waited one more minute and carefully looked over to the caves. No on looked in his direction. He quickly ran to the other side and followed Charlie’s track. Shit! They’ve found the box! He had to talk with Charlie. He had to return that box to him! It was very important to him! Even more important than to Charlie. He maybe didn’t understand the content of that box but Sawyer did. He started running now and nearly bumped into Charlie. He was sitting on the ground leaning against a tree. He somehow looked sad and lonely. What was it with that guy?

Sawyer moved slowly towards Charlie and tried not to make a sound – but failed. A twig cracked under one of his steps and Charlie jumped by the sound of it. He at once recognized Sawyer and looked at him with angry eyes.

“Hey kid! Glad to see me?”, Sawyer greeted and stepped out of his hiding place. He straightly walked over to Charlie and stopped opposite of him, looking down at the young man.

Charlie gave him a “Piss off!” look.

“I guess not. Well, I just came to make a peace offer.”

Charlie’s eyes relaxed a bit and he looked curious though a bit suspicious, too.

“Ya got yar box back. Jackass found it in my stuff. And here’s my offer: Ya give it back to me and ya can keep yar diary.”

“But you’ve got Claire’s dairy already!”

“Wrong, my dear! Jacko got it, too. Seems he’s got a kleptomaniac touch, huh?” Sawyer laughed and gave Charlie a contemptuous smile.

“We gotta deal?”

Charlie stood up hastily.

“No! Who do you think you are? It belongs to me! You stole it from me! And what the hell do you need it for?”

“That’s ma business, kiddy. Now listen closely, I will repeat ma offer only one more time. Ya gimme the box, ya can keep the diary.”

Charlie stepped closer and looked up into Sawyer’s eyes, his own ones full of hatred and disgust.

“No.”

“Not the right answer.”, responded Sawyer, grinning mockingly, he shook his head slightly and hit Charlie unexpectedly in the stomach. Charlie fell to his knees moaning with pain.

“Ya don’t get it, d’ya? I always get what I want! I wanted it to discuss it through but ya seem to prefer the hard way! Fight then!”

“No…”, Charlie whispered, almost to himself.

“What?” Sawyer thought he hadn’t hear properly.

“I said no, I won’t fight you.” Charlie made eye contact with Sawyer again, head up, voice getting more and more self-confident with every word.

“Why the fuckin’ hell?”, Sawyer shouted infuriated at him and knocked him down with a strike in the face.

“You can hit me as often as you wish to. But I won’t hit back.”, Charlie said painful, struggling to speak.

This made Sawyer even more furious. He never had met a case like Charlie. He actually offered Sawyer to beat the fuck out of him. And so Sawyer kicked, smacked, slammed, hit and punched – every time only inches away from Charlie’s head, ribs, legs. He missed him. On purpose. Charlie didn’t even had to roll out of the way. In the end Sawyer broke down, kneeling over the shocked and scared young man with his hands digging into the ground and his face hanging nearly lifeless over Charlie’s. Charlie suddenly felt a drop of water landing on his cheek, sliding it down slowly until finally reaching the earthen ground, sinking into it.

Sawyer was crying.

“Please, gimme that box back…Please…”

Sawyer was pleading.
