The Newbie
“So, your first official investigation…..…you’re one of the team now” Owen Harper says, as you enter the underground hub of Torchwood 3.
You smile, bashfully, and say “yeah, it beats doing admin”.
”Hey! Don’t let Ianto hear you say that, thems fightin’ words!” Jack says, with a laugh, as you all head over to the seating area by the computers.
It is the end of your first week working at Torchwood. Most of your week was spent assisting Ianto with admin but today Jack had decided to include you in a team investigation. Tosh had detected rift activity earlier that day that was swiftly followed by reports of a strange creature running amok along Queen Street. It had taken you most of the day to finally track it down and contain it and now you were all exhausted, well, all except Jack, that is. He always seems to be buzzing with energy. You let yourself drop down onto the old, worn couch, taking in your surroundings as conversations go on around you. You still find it hard to believe a place like this exists beneath the busy tourist hotspot of Cardiff Bay. Your eyes are fixed on the huge silver column at the centre of the hub, reaching all the way to the roof and beyond, water cascading down the mirrored surfaces. You find yourself beginning to drift into a daze but are quickly brought back to your senses by the sound of a pair of hands being clapped together.
“OK guys, it’s been a helluva day so I think we should call it a night but I want you all in bright and early tomorrow morning. Tosh, I want you to analyse the readings we got and assess the rift’s stability……..don’t want anymore more of those guys dropping through. Owen, I’ll need you to run the usual tests on the creature, figure out which species it is, the threat level………you know the drill. We had a lot of witnesses today so I need you, Gwen, to track down the people who were seriously effected and maybe slip them some retcon. We’ll need to send out a story to the press to contain the fall out. Just put it down to a student prank” Jack says, with an air of authority and confidence that you find quite comforting.
“You know, no matter how many times we use that old line they always seem to buy it” Gwen chuckles, as the rest of the team smile in agreement.
Jack looks down at you, his arms folded in front of him. “As for you, we need a little chat. My office, two seconds” he says, as he turns and heads to his office, expecting you to follow.
You feel a sudden sense of anxiety. Are you in trouble? You quickly scan through the day in your mind’s eye and try and pick out anything that you might have done wrong. You look to the rest of the team for answers but they look equally confused.
“You’ll be fine” mouths Gwen, reassuringly, giving you the thumbs up as you follow Jack into his office.
As you reach the doorway, you notice that he is already sitting behind his desk. He gestures for you to sit down on the small chair facing him. You move, silently, towards it and sit down, studying Jack’s face for any hint of what he may be thinking. There is silence a moment more until Jack suddenly bursts into laughter.
“You look like a naughty schoolgirl who’s been sent to the principal’s office. Relax, I’m not going to give you detention or take you over my knee and spank you………..although, if that’s what you’re into, I’m sure we could come to some arrangement” he says, flashing a wicked smile, his eyes glinting with mischief.
You laugh and feel your anxiety easing. “Umm, no, I think I’ll pass on that” you giggle, feeling the mood lighten.
“Seriously though, I just wanted to know how you feel about the job so far. Torchwood is so far removed from a regular 9 - 5, you’re gonna see things that will challenge your own beliefs, some people could find that overwhelming. I just want to make sure that you can handle all of this” Jack says, gesturing with his hands.
“Well, I have to admit, it’s been quite a week. A few weeks ago if you’d told me aliens existed I’d have thought you were crazy, but now………….it’s like seeing the world from a different perspective. I didn’t realise how closed minded I was before coming here, you’ve certainly opened my mind to new possibilities now……………….and I wouldn’t change that for the world” you reply, smiling to yourself.
Jack looks over your shoulder as he listens to you. Far behind you, you hear the sound of the cog-like door to the hub open and then, moments later, close. “I’m glad you said that” he says, turning his attention back to you and then picking up the phone.
You watch, curiously, as he taps in a number and waits.
“Ianto, they’re on their way out. As soon as they’re gone get your cute Welsh ass down here” he orders, with a smile. There is a short pause and another burst of laughter before he hangs up the phone. You’d heard that something was going on between Jack and Ianto from the rest of the team so you guess that this must be some planned rendezvous.
“Right then, I’ll get out of your hair now. I’m sure you’ve got plans for your night” you say, as you get up to leave.
Before you’ve even reached the door you feel a hand on your shoulder.
“Hey, where are you going? We’re not through yet” Jack asks, as you turn to face him.
“Oh…….I thought you were making plans with Ianto……” you reply, feeling slightly confused.
“The only plans I’ve been discussing are how we can give you a proper welcome to the team” he says, a slow smile creeping across his lips.
"A proper welcome?" you ask, feeling slightly anxious.
Jack replies by placing his hand on the side of your face, his deep, blue eyes gazing down into yours. Your heart begins to race as he leans in closer and begins to kiss you.

Author note: Just added something at the end to finish this chapter properly. Sorry that it's taking so long to add to this, my muse is very fickle!! Hope you all like it so far though.
