Chapter 1

“So this is it,” Gibby said, visibly disappointed about his friends leaving at eleven o’clock. His arms were wrapped against his chest and his expression was strict and angry, but to the trio it looked like an angry pouty phase from a toddler. He hosted a party for the 107th birthday of the first toaster, but sharing toast with the rest of the school didn’t seem to be such a popular idea. “You’re ditching me!” He concluded shortly

“Listen Gibby, we really want to stay,” Carly tried to give some sympathy for their tall friend.

“We actually don’t” Sam said in all honesty. Freddie shot a glare to Sam and decided to stand on Carly’s side on this one. Freddie’s relationship with Sam did improve the past years. Sam toned down the physical beatings and Freddie decided to take Sam’s insults less seriously. Freddie believed that his relationship with Sam was very unique. They weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend and they weren’t typical friends either. Brother and sister would come close, but that didn’t explain the playful flirting between the two. Freddie was content with saying that Sam and he were, well, Sam and Freddie and he loved her.

“We really loved to be at your party,” Freddie continued.

“It was la-ame,” Sam chanted.

“Sam!” Carly and Freddie scolded in unison. Having raised from frenemy to ehm… a Freddie to Sam, the relationship between Carly and Freddie inevitably changed as well and according to Freddie in a good way. Just like his relationship with Sam, he considered his relationship with Carly just as rare. Freddie still considered Carly as one of the most beautiful girls he had ever laid eyes on, but he also learned that the perfect Carly isn’t as perfect as he thought, and boy, he loved to point that out. Nevertheless, he loved her, maybe even more than ever.

“Don’t bother,” Gibby said. “I’ll celebrate with the rest of the party goers,”

“We were the only party goers who came,” Sam pointed out.

“They’ll come,” Gibby said confidently.

“No, they won’t” Sam said still trying to bring reality to Gibby.

“Of course they will come!” Carly encouraged her friend.

“You really think so?”

“No,” Carly said in all honesty.

“No problem,” Gibby said with quiet sadness. “I’ll eat my toast myself,”

“You do that, Gib,” Freddie said as he petted him on the back. “We’ll be going,”

“Thanks for coming anyways,” Gibby said, before the trio walked out of the Gibson Residence.

“Hey Sam,” Freddie said zipping his jacket tight. “Let us escort you to your house, okay?”

“No need, I’m going to jump at Carly’s tonight,” Sam said.

“Oh well, then Bushwell it is,”

It took the trio ten minutes to arrive at Carly’s home. Carly pressed the lamp switch at the wall to illuminate the dark living room. Sam immediately jumped the couch as Carly walked in.

“Hey guys,” Freddie said, while standing at the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

“Why do you not stay with us?” Carly purposed.

“Well, uhm… I thought you wanted to have a ladies night and-“ Freddie said, but was interrupted by Sam.

“Ladies night or not, you’re qualified in my book,” Sam said with a devils smile.

“Ha-ha-ha,” Freddie mocked in amusement. “I guess I take the invitation than. Mom isn’t home anyway,” Not feeling like to get into another discussion with Sam he sat at the arm-rest of the couch, pretty much leaning against Sam’s propped shins, while he gave a playful swat to her knee. Carly decided to sit at the remaining arm-rest at Sam’s head. Sam lifted her head a little to make room for Carly, just to rest on her thigh.

“Pretty lame party, wasn’t it?” Carly brought up, while absentmindedly stroking the blonde, curly hairs of her best friend, while talking to Freddie. Sam decided to rest her legs on Freddie’s instead, while he laid his hands on her knees in return.

“Yeah, it was,” Freddie answered. For a moment the trio went silent. Deep in their thoughts they enjoyed the moment they had with each other, even when it was that small, that… subtle.

“So,” Carly broke the silence. “Anything, what do you guys want to do?”

“I don’t know,” Freddie said. “You two are the creative minds of the team, remember?”

“How about a movie?” Carly suggested.

“I don’t know,” Sam said. “You don’t really get to interact with each other or to know each other,”

“We know everything about each other right?” Carly asked.

“Well if you want to interact, maybe we should play a game,” Freddie said. Carly looked at him. “I’m sorry,” he uttered.

“Actually,” Sam said. “That’s not a bad idea,”

“Really?” Freddie asked in disbelief.

“I know exactly the game where you get to know each other,” Sam said. “And a game where you have to trust each other,”

“What game?” Carly asked barely keeping her voice from screaming.

“Poker,” Sam said with a smirk.

“Poker?” Freddie asked. Sam smiled even wider.

“Strip Poker,” There was a silence. Freddie and Carly looked at Sam like they saw water burn. Freddie saw Sam devious grin resting on a pile of wild, blonde curls and Carly’s lap.

“Strip Poker?” Freddie asked with great disapproval and disgust in his voice. It was the voice he used when he tried to talk reason into Sam when she caused trouble (which probably will never change).

Carly followed. “You mean like with removing clothing end getting...”

“…as naked as at the day you were born?” Sam ended the question for her, before answering it. “Pretty much,”

“But, I can’t see you naked,” Freddie started to rumble. “I mean I don’t know how much you guys saw of each other, and what if you don’t like to see when I, you know, remove my underwear?”

“Don’t worry,” Sam said. “I haven’t seen Carly naked, if that’s what you askin’”

“And what if Sam started to laugh at my small…” Carly started but trailed off; unable to say the word she had in mind.

“Listen, I won’t laugh,” Sam said sincerely. “at neither of you. If you want to know, I’m just as nervous, but I think-“ she sighed. “I know that the three of us are pretty close together. Whatever we are, I see it as something beautiful, sacred,” Carly and Freddie looked at Sam with a concentrated look. Sam switched into (what Freddie liked to call it) Serious Chizz Mode, which rarely happened, and never happened if anybody else is present than Carly or Freddie. “I just love you guys, and I want to bring this friendship or whatever we are to a higher level. I want to know you guys, I mean really know you. Everything about you, your secrets, your fears, your…” she took a good look at Freddie propping herself up and pushing herself up with her elbows, “your body” she whispered.

“I think I understand you,” Freddie said comfortingly. “If we are such good friends as we believe we are, then maybe seeing each other naked, I mean, this might be a good test about how much we trust each other,”

“By giving our selves exposed… literally,” Carly finished.

“And figuratively,” Sam said. “There will be truths and dares involved,”

“Do you have the rules, then?” Carly asked.

“You guys know how to play poker?”

“Texas?” Freddie asked.

“Five Card Draw,”

“I know how to play,” Carly said and Freddie confirmed with a nod.

“Good, Five Card Draw with a draw limit of three. The loser strips and the winner can ask “Truth or Dare” to either of the other two. A dare can always include someone else whoever the winner wants. You can’t choose either truth or dare for the entire game, so if you got two subsequent truths you have to go with a dare next and vice versa.”

“Sounds simple,” Carly said with a smile. She tried to get herself bolder than she was. It was probably a border she had to cross once in her life and when is a better moment with the two closest people there are. “I suggest we play in my room,”

“I’ll get the cards,” Freddie said. “I’ll see you later,”
