Chapter One - "Somebody Kiss Me!"

A/N:This is in response to usedusername on LJ. Her one-sentence-prompt, #45 - Eclipse...and it's the summary. "There's usually a defining moment when relationships go beyond friendship; it wasn't when Joey pushed Chandler against a wall and kissed him, but rather when he kissed back." Please rate and review; I love knowing what you guys think. ~ FA

SPOILERS: This chapter contains spoilers for "TOW The Monkey" so...yeah. Just warning you. ^_^

Joey faked a laugh at Chandler's smart-ass remark as the two of them went to stand by the kitchen table with Ross, Monica, and Phoebe. Dateless, ever last one of their group, and wasn't it just typical? Which didn't make it suck any less.

“Hey, everybody, the ball is dropping.” Rachel mumbled, finding it hard to talk as her lip had continued getting more swollen over the last few hours.

The rest of the group didn't understand her and a chorus of 'What?' made Rachel turn sharply and, with a gesture and a head-jerk at the TV, she stated, “The ball is dropping!” in an annoyed voice, while in the background Dick Clark's voice could be heard, cheerfully announcing that it was twenty seconds to midnight.

Rachel moved to stand between Phoebe and Joey as Chandler sarcastically intoned, “And the moment of joy is upon us.”

Joey nodded, annoyed that his date Sandy had abandoned him for a scientist. “Looks like that no-date-pact thing worked out.”

Sadly, Phoebe said, “Everybody looks so happy.” Waspishly, she added, “I hate that!”

Rachel uncrossed her arms to hug Phoebe gently while Monica pointed out, “Not everybody's happy. Hey, Bobby!”

Fun Bobby – who was sitting on Monica's couch – looked up, made a pathetic whimpering sound, and waved her away before turning around and crying again. The room filled with the sound of Dick Clark on the TV – and the other guests – cheerfully counting down. “Five...four...three...two...one...Happy New Year!”

Chandler had a sudden thought. Stepping forward, he faced his friends. “You know, I uh...I just thought I'd throw this out there.” He gestured with his hands. “I'm no math whiz, but I do believe there are three girls, and three guys, right here. Mwuah, mwuah.” The kissing noises Chandler made where accompanied by a smug smile.

“Oh, I don't feel like kissing anyone tonight.” Phoebe said, waving her hand dismissively as she walked a few feet away and sat down facing the others.

“Well,” Rachel said, bringing her right hand up to her busted mouth, “I can't kiss anyone.” Joey rubbed her back gently, feeling bad for her.

Monica lifted her hands in an, 'Are you shitting me?' gesture and asked, disbelievingly, “So I'm kissing everyone?”

Rachel let her hand fall open, as if to say, 'Well...', but stopped with a thoughtful look when Joey pointed out. “No, no, no! You can't kiss Ross!” Joey emphasized this by waving his hand at him. “That's your brother!”

“Oh, yeah, right.” Rachel murmured while Monica made a face, lifted her hands helplessly, and gave a small shake of her head.

“Oh perfect! Perfect!” Ross snapped, gesturing repeatedly with his left hand. “So now everybody's getting kissed but me!”

Chandler took a half-step forward and said demandingly. “Alright, somebody kiss me!” As the others protested, he continued. “Somebody kiss me!”

He started to hop up and down, ignoring Monica's protests of 'Stop, stop!', whining loudly, “Somebody kiss me! It's midnight and the ball's dropped and...”

His voice was drowned out by Joey, who threw up his hands and said, “Alright, alright, alright!”

Before anyone could figure out what was happening, Joey had stepped forward. He grabbed Chandler's face firmly with both hands, leaned down, and pressed a quick, smacking kiss on his best friend's lips. A camera flash went off as he pulled back, dropped his hands, and said in annoyance. “There!”

Chandler's face was frozen, his lips still slightly puckered, his eyebrows low over his eyes. Joey had a blank look on his face for a split second, then he switched briefly to surprise as his eyebrows shot up dramatically. After another second, he realized what he'd just done and assumed the same confused, considering look as Chandler.

“I, uh...” Chandler cleared his throat nervously and said. “I'm gonna go now.”

Joey threw a helpless look at the rest of his friends as Chandler walked out. “Guys, what do I do? I didn't mean to do that. It just happened!”

“So go talk to him.” Phoebe stated reasonable. “He's so weird about gay stuff. You know, 'cause of his dad...so just explain you don't think he's gay and he'll calm down.”

“Right.” Joey nodded repeatedly, still looking worriedly after Chandler. “I'll...okay, bye.”

After Joey ran out, Rachel and Ross went to sit on the couch and talk while Phoebe dragged Monica into her own bedroom to talk to her. “Oh my god!” She squealed, her unhappiness about David forgotten in her excitement.

“What?” Monica asked, sitting on her bed. “Why are you so excited?”

“Um, hello?” Phoebe gestured wildly at the door to the living room. “Chandler and Joey!” She made a happy little squealing noise. “Weren't you paying attention?”

Monica blinked slowly, then laughed. “Phoebe, sweetie, I don't think you understand. Joey isn't gay. He just wasn't thinking about what he was doing.”

Now it was Phoebe's turn to laugh. “Oh, Monica...I know Joey's not the brightest, but regardless of how gay Chandler seems, he's still obviously a guy. And Joey's not dumb enough to accidentally kiss a guy. I mean, come on.”

“Are you serious?” Monica stoop up and grabbed Phoebe's arms, her nails biting into her skin through the gossamer amber fabric of Phoebe's sleeves. “You really think that Joey and...” She swallowed hard and whispered. “Chandler?”

“Uh, duh!” Phoebe stated, looking at her closest friend like she was stupid. “Once Chandler calms down, I guarantee he's going to decide he liked that kiss and that he wants Joey. I mean, there's already way closer than normal guy friends anyway.”

Monica sank slowly down onto the bed, having released her death grip on Phoebe. “Yeah, no, that's true.” She looked up at the blonde in shock, her eyes wide. “Oh my god! Joey and Chandler! Can we...”

“NO!” Phoebe yelled, shaking her head vigorously at Monica. “No, if we interfere, we might mess it up. So no saying anything until sort it out, okay?”

“Of course.” Monica murmured, sighing. “Still...I mean, wow. How hot is that?” Phoebe merely nodded; she'd seen this coming for a while now. And Phoebe was almost never wrong.
