In the Still of the Night
Author's Note: This was a one shot that grew because I kept watching the show and making up homosexual undertones.
This Chapter is set in the last episode of Season One.
Opie could barely get his keys out of his pocket, and even then it was Jax that had to take them from his hands gently and open the front door for him.
Once he stepped inside the first thing he did was walk over to his bedroom and make sure the kids were still sound asleep in bed. He opened the bedroom door just a notch. When he saw them he was reminded of how just that morning they had all woken up together; a peaceful loving family. How was he supposed to tell them that their mother was dead?
Opie took off his beanie hat and bit it to keep from crying out. His other hand held on to the door frame as he shook in his grief.
Jax closed the front door to the house and saw his friend silently weeping. He walked over and stood right behind him. He lifted a hand and made comforting circles on Opie’s back.
Opie turned around and hugged Jax to him fiercely, breaking down again in the comfort of his best friend's arms and away from everyone else’s eyes this time. He held his face to Jax’s neck and just hid for as long as could. Jax just held him until the worst was past, and the newly grieving widower calmed down a bit.
Opie leaned back slightly, but still kept his arms wrapped around his best friend.
"That should have been me" Opie said in Jax’s ear. "They thought she was me in that truck."
"It looks like it," Jax said. "We'll find out who's responsible. We'll take care of it."
"This is my fault," Opie shook his head. “Donna wanted out of all this. She wanted a new life.”
"You can’t blame yourself, all right? I know you want to, but we’re not going to let you. We’re going to find out who did this and then I’m going to pull the fucking trigger. Can’t have you getting caught and leave your kids alone with no parents. “
"Jax…" Opie said.
“Not up for discussion,” Jax said with finality. He ran a hand through his friend’s hair and smoothed it down.
Jax couldn't comprehend what Opie was going through. He tried to imagine how he would feel if Tara was killed or even Wendy. Either way he knew it would be devastating. In all actuality Jax felt guilty because if he was real honest he'd have to admit he was glad Opie was not in that truck and that Donna had died instead of him. The thought of losing Opie made him subconsciously hold Opie tighter.
Opie squeezed back.
Jax moved his head back and saw the defeated look on his friend's face. Before he even knew what he had done he'd placed a kiss on Opie's half open lips.
Opie looked up at him slightly confused, and Jax looked away suddenly shy and trying to play it off like no big deal. He hoped Opie didn’t ask, because Jax had no explanation for what he’d just done.
"Are you going to be all right?" Jax asked. He backed away a few steps before he looked at Opie again who nodded his reply. "I’m gonna head out then. Call me if you need anything."
Opie nodded still slightly confused as Jax backed away and left the house, locking the door with a twist on the doorknob.
Opie turned back to his bedroom and opened the door far enough to step inside. The sight of the empty space next to his kids making his heart constrict again.
Outside Jax got on his ride and headed home to Wendy and Abel. The small kiss he’d shared with his best friend was never far from his mind.
