A/N: I don’t think I’ve ever done a re-write of a specific ending to any fandom I’ve ever written in, but with the massive marathon I’ve been indulging in? Well, you know me. It had to be done. No promises, but there may be more of my new favorite fandom coming. *sigh* I have a ton of favorites.
Thank God for Friends
Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard trotted down the hall after a familiar figure, “Rodney!” He didn’t stop, but knowing the scientist he wasn’t terribly surprised. The man spent most of his time cerebrally two steps ahead of his daily plans.
“McKay!”
The way the doctor jerked to a stop gave John his first clue that all was not well. “Hey, buddy, I thought you came through this virus okay,” he joked.
“No, no, I did. It’s Katie Brown, the woman I’m dating. Was dating.”
“I thought she made it?”
“She did, but the virus was further along in her than it was in anyone else. Her memory loss hasn’t gone away. They’re sending her back to Earth, and it doesn’t look like she’s coming back.”
“I think it’s only temporary. I mean, everyone else came through this okay.”
“Everyone, and I mean everyone as far along as Katie was is dead. We’re not really sure why she lasted longer than the others but it looks like she has permanent damage to her memory cortex. I’m not sure if the SGC is keeping her or if they’re sending her to her family, but…”
“At least she’s alive.”
“Yes well, at the moment it’s a cold comfort.”
John rocked back on his heels. He couldn’t offer that much but; “At least the team made it through okay.”
“You and I were the only ones that were even remotely in danger.” Rodney snorted.
“And yet we managed to save the city and our people.”
“Yay us,” Came the deadpan cheer. “Tell me, Sheppard, what’s the point if we can’t save the people we care about?”
“Because we’re us, Rodney, and regardless of the Replicators, the Wraith and even the Genii there are those out there like Ronon and Teyla fighting to be saved. We may not be perfect, but we were picked by the SGC and our leaders because we have the chance of being the best Earth and humanity have to offer this galaxy.”
“The best?”
“Yeah, well, don’t expect me to say it all the time… or ever again for that matter, but you have to know that we are here for a reason. I happen to think it’s a good one.”
“Fine, but just so you know, with Katie gone there goes my only chance of getting laid in this galaxy.”
“Rodney.”
“No really, because I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there’s not exactly a line of people lining up by my door to date.”
“Rodney.”
“I think that they’re intimidated by my intelligence.”
John rolled his eyes, wrapped his hands around Rodney’s face and kissed him. “Well then, thank God for friends,” he smirked and walked down the hall. “And for the record, McKay, I’ve never been intimidated by your brain.”
