The Hub: Requsuitions from the Rift.

This is a sequel to The Hub: After Hours, another Torchwood story of mine, and while reading that is not essential, it is highly recommended. Please read and review, both praise and constructive criticism, and thank you.

“It should be around about here.”

Lowering the wristband, he glanced around the area. A few dustbins, a lone tree, a bench, a row of hedges; nothing much out of the ordinary.

“Jack, are you sure there’s actually something to find. We’ve been chasing ghosts for half an hour.”

The irritation was evident in Gwen’s voice. It was not so much Jack she was irritated at, or even the fact it was 2am at night, but the circumstances. It was a week since their liaison together in the Hub showers, and they had carefully arranged that the Hub would be there’s again tonight. She had been looking forward to it all week after what Jack had shown her the first time, but instead of enjoying a full night of carnal euphoria, she was here.

Jack made a quick glance back down to his wristband, confirming and then adjusting the settings.

“Definitely. This thing never let me down; it’s probably just the radiation throwing it off slightly. I’ve always had this set to find normal Rift activity, never anything like this. The signature’s just different enough that I can’t get a definite lock.”

“Fine!” Gwen replied with exasperation. She crouched down and began to peer between a dense set of hedges, waving a torch through the dense foliage.

“You found anything yet?” she cried out, rustling through fallen leaves and twigs, desperately wanting to go back home or the Hub, whichever was closest. She didn’t care about her night with Jack anymore: they had been out for 2 hours chasing a sudden burst of Rift activity, with about 16 new items. (What they were was a different matter entirely.) This last item had been highly peculiar though, even for the Rift. They hadn’t been able to get any definite fix, and to be honest, it was driving her mad. “No. You?” he shouted back.

“’Afraid not. You kn... Hang on. I think I’ve found something.”

She could feel her fingertips brush against a solid surface that had caught the beam of her torch. It was cool and metallic, and she heaved herself forwards to grasp onto the end of it and haul it forwards and out of the foliage. It was a simple box, about the size of a suitcase, with a perfectly seamless, gleaming metallic surface in a dull silver colour, with no distinguishing or identifying features apart from a nearly invisible line which distinguished the lid from the box proper. Jack had by now joined her and was crouched down besides it, slowly sweeping the box with the wristband.

“Yep. This is exactly what’ve we’ve been chasing.”
“Finally! Only took 2 hours and about a hundred dead ends.”
“Let’s see what this thing is exactly” Jack murmured to himself.
“Who cares? Let’s just get it back to the Hub and deal with it on Tuesday. Whatever it is can wait till after tomorrow’s day off. Besides, it’s 2am!”
Jack was about to retort, but the overpowering yawn he gave out reminded him of the all too desperate need for rest, so they began to silently pack up.
It was simple to load up, and the drive in the SUV was short, but the combination of exhaustion and remnants of resentment for her ruined plans meant that when they arrived, the container was unceremoniously deposited on the coffee table and having arranged so that she would sleep at the Hub, she fell onto the sofa and did just that.

And all the while, radiation continued to emit from the box.
