One Blood

Ianto Jones sighed as he stepped into Torchwood’s Hub. It was late, almost 12 at night and Ianto had just finished dropping off the other members of Torchwood from their latest mission. The Welshman had put off returning to his own apartment and returned to the Hub.

The Hub was a mess, as was usual after a Torchwood Mission. There were pizza boxes all over the place, along with a few cans of soda and other random objects. The Weevils and Pterodactyl needed to be fed and alien plants needed to be watered. Despite the late hour, Ianto wanted to get as much possible fixed that night, since Jack had given them the next day off, unless a crisis occurred.

Ianto blinked in confusion when he realized that, although the main lights in the hub were off, Jack’s office had light streaming from it. Intrested in what his boss/lover/boyfriend could be doing, Ianto made his way up to the room and peeked in through the open door.

Jack was half-lying half-sitting on the beat up couch that was in his office, the couch which normally served as another desk for the papers and such that Jack collected and Ianto organized every now and then.

Another strange thing was Jack’s clothing. He wasn’t wearing his typical military garments, but rather a pair of tattered old blue jeans and a white wife-beater. His feet were bare, his face calm and in his hands were holding a guitar. This made Ianto blink. He knew every corner of the hub, every little place where Jack hid stuff… and he’d never seen a guitar anywhere!

The guitar was a dark wood and had strange symbols drawn on it. Although it was well cared for, it showed signs of use and age, making Ianto wondered where Jack had picked the instrument up. As Ianto watched Jack finished fiddling with the instrument… tuning it Ianto suspected and started to pick out a simple tune, which slowly grew more complex, as if Jack was struggling to remember how the melody went.

Ianto leaned against the doorframe, a smile on his face as he watched Jack, the song he was playing slowly getting more and more complex until a smile grew over Jack’s face and he started to sing along with the music.

In the far away fires, where the hills forever burn…
At the feet of our heroes, we try hard to learn.
But the lesson is lost there, in the smoke and the mud---
That we are one flesh, one breath, one life, one blood…

Ianto found his mouth falling open in surprise. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Jack Harkness, whom the world saw as a playboy, was sitting in candlelight, playing a song for no one, a smile on his face. Here was the Jack that Ianto thought he only saw in times of great sadness… here was a part of Jack that Ianto thought had died sometime after Jack was left behind… here was a joy that Ianto thought had died when the Doctor walked out of the immortal’s life.

I stood by the river, that ran red with shame
I stood in the killing fields ---where death had no name.
I stood with my brothers, and awaited the flood,
And we were one flesh, one breath, one life, one blood…

Silently Ianto entered the room, walking up behind Jack, who was too involved in his song to notice the intruder in his office. Ianto watched as a silent tear rolled down Jack face, despite the smile it bore. Ianto’s heart hurt for his lover, as the new verse of the song tumbled past Jack’s lips.

Then I felt to the ground ---tasted ashes on my tongue
Thinking that only the dead… are forever young…

Closer and closer Ianto moved towards his lover, not wanting to stop Jack from his song, but wishing he could join the immortal, wishing he knew the words to this song that Jack was singing in the dark of night…

And as if by magic Ianto knew how the song would end. Stepping forward Ianto began to sing along with Jack, as he kneeled next to his love.

There was peace in the twilight ---and for a moment or more,
It was a world without danger ---a world without war.

Jack could not hide his surprise at seeing Ianto Jones, kneeling by his feet, singing a song that would not be written for another hundred years or so. Despite his surprise, Jack’s fingers, as if not controlled by his mind, continued to play the song and his voice, though cracking, continued to sing…

And I will take all your suffering, if it will do any good…
Cause we are one flesh, one breath, one life, one blood…

Before Jack could say anything, Ianto leaned up and kissed the taller man deeply, Jack quickly putting the guitar aside and drawing Ianto into his arms and lap as the kiss continued, broken only when Ianto swore he would pass out due to lack of air.

“You never told me you could sing!” Ianto gasped, looking up at Jack, who laughed.

“You never asked.”
