Theta....
The Doctor looked up, hearing a voice whispering above the beeping of the beacon that the sub-wave made.
Theta....
The voice was louder now. A loud whisper. He knew that voice. He hadn't heard it since he was very little, but he still remembered it. Remembered her. Donna looked at him, her eyes asking what was going on, what was that voice. The Doctor grabbed his chest and fell to his knees, one hand on the railing still, gripping it with all his strength, his knuckles going white.
THETA!!!
The voice was screaming now. Screaming for him, calling to him. He felt Donna next to him, helping him to his feet. She helped him to the TARDIS' console. The Doctor could feel the old girl in him, telling him that they needed to go to her. He could hear the fear in the TARDIS, not feeling that since...well, for a very long time.
“Who is she, Doctor?” Donna called to him over the loud beep of the wave.
He had to catch his breath, taking a moment.
“Her name is Goddess...”
“What..what is she?”
“A Time Lady.”
.....
Jack, Ianto, and Gwen covered their ears, Goddess' screams piercing their ears, bouncing off the walls of the Hub. Jack knew that she couldn't hold out for much longer but silently prayed that she would. He managed to stagger over to the Arc, where Goddess lay, Gwen and Ianto following. Goddess felt an anomaly. One that felt like a previous companion of the Doctor's. She felt like gleaming sunshine and pouring rain at once, like incredible happiness and overwhelming sadness, like all consuming passion in a ford of coldness. She felt like home. Like Gallifrey. She latched on to the girl with what power she could spare from boosting the signal. Her body arched up off the slab of the Arc, her eyes snapping open, and she screamed. She screamed with everything in her, pulling that home feeling to her, hoping that it would come to her.
..
The Doctor collapsed to the ground, his back arched just like Goddess', his arms flailing like they were trying to hold on to something, his legs kicking. Donna could only watch helplessly as his body contorted as if in some great pain.
..
Jack took Dessa's hand in his, lacing her fingers with his. Gwen and Ianto tried to get closer, but it was is some great force pushed them back. It felt like Dessa, as if saying that she didn't want them hurt. Jack laid his head on Dessa's stomach, completely unwilling to leave her. He didn't have to look up to see their tears, he knew they were there. He closed his eyes tight and let his mind wander.
..........
(Flashback)
“And do you have a name?” Jack asked her, thoroughly amused with the petite girl.
But then she lifted her head and he paled, looking into an all to familiar gaze.
“They call me Goddess,” Then she smirked, “but you can call me Dessa.”
(end flashback)
“Dessa!” The Doctor screamed, feeling her reach out to him.
“Theta!” Dessa screamed in return.
The Doctor and Dessa reached out, lifting one hand, closing it as if lacing their fingers together. Jack squeezed her other hand. Donna watched as the Doctor's other hand seemed to do the same as the first, though it lay on his chest. A light started to emanate from Dessa, enveloping Jack in it's wake, making Ianto and Gwen dive for cover from the brightness. Donna ducked behind the console when it got too much for her, still covering her eyes.
(flashback)
Dessa stood on a balcony, closing her eyes breathing in the sweet night air. She felt a tiny hand grip hers and looked down into the tired and smiling face of the sweetest little boy alive.
“Do you have to leave?” He asked her.
Dessa picked him up and held him close, the little boy wrapping his little arms around her neck.
“I'm sorry, Theta...”
(end flashback)
Jack clenched his jaw at the pain that ran through him, not letting himself scream, not letting himself cry, not letting him make any sort of indication that it even hurt. Dessa could feel them: Jack, Theta, the girl... She held on to them and let it pull her out as she felt the TARDIS 'running' for her, coming for her. Everyone sending the signal dove for cover as the glow swelled, consuming the darkness.
(Flashback)
“Dessa?”
“What, Jack?”
“Just how do you know the Doctor?”
*flash*
She felt a hand touch her shoulder and she dropped the picture on the desk. She looked up and into Jack's bright blue eyes. She turned to him and buried her face into his shoulder, finally letting herself cry. Jack looked to the picture on the desk, seeing a teenage Dessa playing with a little boy in a park.
*flash*
“Who's the cutie?” Gwen asked, handing the picture to Dessa.
Dessa smiled softly and tucked the picture away.
“He's my little brother,” She replied as softly as her smile.
Gwen smiled back at Dessa.
“He's my Theta...”
*flash*
Jack watched Gwen and Dessa talking, sitting on either end of the large table, food spread in front of them, tossing pieces of popcorn at each other after one made a comment. He smiled at the display of youth in Dessa, knowing the look of age and weariness in her eyes betrayed the outside. She flung a spoon of something chocolate and hit Gwen in the forehead. He chuckled and closed his eyes, shaking his head as he went back to the paperwork.
*flash*
Dessa watched Jack under a lidded gaze. He was walking away from her and she was very much enjoying the view.
(end flashbacks)
“I'm not leaving you...” said a whisper of many voices.
The whisper contained the four people that were caught in the maelstrom: Dessa, Jack, the Doctor, and...and Rose.
