Thanks to my friend and beta Judy for all her help.
Chapter One:
The rain was falling hard as Sam entered Port Charles. She had been gone since finding out a year ago that she was pregnant with her boyfriend Lucky’s child. Sam looked over her shoulder, making sure that there was no one behind her as she pulled up in front of her mother’s house. Sam had only spoken to her mother a few times since leaving Port Charles. The first time she had called her mother was the day she left, to tell her mother that she was pregnant and that she was leaving.
Her mother had asked why she was leaving but Sam had not answered at first. After a few weeks when Sam had started to feel miserable and lonely, she had finally called her mother and told her about Riley. Alexis had asked if she was going to tell Lucky about their daughter but Sam had said that she wasn’t ready at the time. Now she was back in Port Charles and she wondered what was going to happen when she finally told Lucky about their daughter.
Sam turned the car off and took her keys out of the ignition. She undid her seat belt and then opened her door. Getting out of her car, Sam closed her door once more before going to open Riley’s door. Unbuckling Riley from her seat, Sam lifted her daughter out of the car and grabbed the blanket that was on the seat next to her daughter. Then she closed the door and locked the car.
She wrapped the blanket around Riley so that her daughter wouldn’t get too wet. When Sam was sure that Riley was shielded enough from the rain, she quickly walked up the driveway and knocked on the door to her mother’s house. It was a few minutes before Alexis opened the door and the surprise and happiness at seeing them was obvious. “Sam. Oh my God!” Alexis exclaimed as she ushered her daughter and granddaughter in from the rain.
After closing and locking the door behind them she turned to face Sam and Riley. Alexis hugged Sam and then asked if she could hold Riley. “Sure. Yeah. You can hold her.” Sam handed her daughter over to her mother, a small smile gracing her lips as she watched two of the most important people in her life starting to bond. Alexis invited Sam to sit down and the two of them talked about what was going on in their lives, as Alexis spent some time with Riley.
After dancing around the subject for a while Alexis finally asked, “Are you here because you’re finally going to tell Lucky about Riley?” Sam shrugged and then said, “I’m here because I felt it was time for me to come home and I’ve decided that when I see Lucky, then I’ll tell him about Riley. I’m not just going to expect him to act like nothing has changed, when in fact everything has.” Alexis nodded at her daughter’s words as she smiled at Riley.
The three of them spent a pleasant night together. Sam and Alexis spent the night catching up and getting to know each other again and Alexis was overjoyed at getting to know her granddaughter. They watched movies, popped popcorn and talked about how their friends were doing and what was going on with them. When Sam asked if Lucky and Elizabeth had gotten back together, she was glad when her mother told her that they hadn’t.
However, she was sad when her mother said that Lucky hadn’t been seeing anyone since she left. Suddenly Alexis asked, “Sam. What are you going to do if Lucky wants to get back together with you?” Sam shook her head. “He’s not going to want to get back together. I hid the fact that we have a daughter from him. If I was in Lucky’s place I wouldn’t forgive me either.” Alexis handed Riley back to Sam and then said, “I think you should be open to the possibility that you and Lucky could get back together. Surely when he finds out about Riley it will only strengthen his love for you.”
Sam appreciated what her mother was saying but she lived in reality. “Look. I’d love it if Lucky and I got back together. But I don’t think it will ever happen. I hurt him and that’s not something one just gets over in a few days, weeks or months. It’s going to hurt him twice as much when he finds out why I left. Part of me wonders if Lucky will ever be able to forgive me from keeping our daughter’s existence from him.”
Alexis tried to comfort her daughter. “I’m sure that if you’re honest with Lucky, then things might go better than you expect.” Sam sighed and she shifted Riley to her other arm. “It’s going to be hard for me to be honest with him. You and I both know that honesty isn’t exactly my thing.” Alexis nodded again and then said, “As long as you tell Lucky about Riley I think everything will be okay. But if you avoid Lucky for fear that he will find out about Riley before you’re ready to tell him, then I can assure you that things will go badly.”
Sam nodded and then she looked at the clock that hung on the wall. Looking back at her mother she asked softly, “Is it okay if we continue this discussion later? I’ve been driving for hours and I could really use some sleep.” Alexis nodded and then she led Sam to the guest room. Kissing her daughter on the cheek and then smiling at Riley once more, Alexis left the room and went to read for a while.
Sam sighed softly as she set Riley up next to her in the bed, fixing the blankets and getting comfortable. After trying to fall asleep for a few minutes, Sam gave up. She lay on her back and thought about how and when she was going to tell Lucky about Riley. Sam wondered if Lucky would want to be a part of Riley’s life. He already had Cameron, why would he want Riley? A tear fell down Sam’s cheek as she finally drifted off to sleep.
