He's Reasons Not To

He found reasons not to.

They might not happen every day, but they were still reasons. Good reasons even, according to John.

That's what mattered.

He didn't do it when he was able to figure out the answer to a complex equation that had more twists and turns than a double helix and by figuring out the answer, he was able to use it to give the 'jumpers more powers to their sublight engines, allowing them to travel twenty-three percent faster with the upgrade.

He didn't do it when they managed to find a new Wraith outpost and were able to place a tracking device on the Hive ship's outer hull so they could track its movement and evacuate a planet's population in time to save them from a culling or at least warn them in time so that they could properly protect themselves from attack.

He didn't do it when he finally managed to reverse engineer Ronon's gun with the help of Radek and start to make more like them to pass out to some of the off-world teams, if only to give them extra protection when they got into trouble.

He didn't do it when SGA-5 brought back a seemingly depleted ZedPM when it was only just turned off and all if took was John brushing against it to turn it on and it was really half-charged and they could use it to power their shields when they needed it.

He didn't do it, even after a disaster where they lost some good people of their expedition, because they had made it out alive and they were able to continue on with their fight against the Wraith and because they were alive and not dead they were able to send a message back to the families of the deceased, if only to give their families closer in the fact that their loved ones died protecting others against a dangerous threat, that their loved ones died as heroes.

He didn't do it for only a few reasons, but it was definitely a start.

Today was the day that, finally, he was being allowed to go back off-world with his team. Kate had said that he had made "desirable progress" towards what she considered to be a "safe place" for him to be at.

Before Rodney had been able to leave the armory with his weapons, the soldier there had made sure that he wasn't carrying any knives whatsoever. Rodney had rolled his eyes at Elizabeth's insistence that he be checked but he could almost understand their reasoning. Almost.

It was only because of the look he got from John that told him to just let them check his body for knives that he let them without more of a fight.

After he was cleared he met up with his team in the Gate room. Ronon and Teyla were waiting patiently and John smiled softly when he walked into the room. Elizabeth nodded to him and he watched, silent, as the 'gate came to life and a moment later, he and his team were stepping through.

It was a simple mission, just checking on the harvesting of some planets crops because they made some deal with them some time ago and Rodney didn't really want to know anymore than that. All he was concerned about was the fact that he was being allowed to go off-world again and he wouldn't do anything to screw this up.

Thankfully, for once, the fates were on the same page.

The mission went off without a hitch and they made it back safely, with a few ounces of freshly harvested wheat – the first batch of the season – as a 'thank-you' for coming to see the start of the seasons off. It was also a sign of good luck or something, Rodney wasn't really sure – he hadn't been paying attention when chief what's-his-face was telling them good-bye.

He was too busy trying to squish the almost consuming wave of sorrow that filled him when he realized that his first mission back was almost over. He didn't want it to be. He liked being away from the city, if only for a few hours.

He sighed softly and tried to be happy about the fact that they mission had gone as planned, for once, and that it wasn't likely to happen again, at least for a long time.

After they had gotten back to the city, John had taken Rodney to go jog for a little while. It was becoming something of a routine for them.

Because Rodney had been more or less under house arrest for the past few weeks, John took it upon himself to get Rodney out of his room at least every day for a few hours – well, for the few hours that Rodney wasn't spending in the lab, working on some project.

Before they started running, Rodney put his hand on John's shoulder hesitantly.

"I think..." he began softly, "I think I've found another reasons not to." John raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah? And what's that?"

"When missions go as planned or at least, when they turn out good, with no causalities or blood shed." John smiled.

"That's an excellent reason, Rodney. Really, it is." John cocked his head to the side and Rodney nodded, a small smile gracing his face as he followed John, settling into a light jog as they jogged through the corridors or the city together.

"I think," Rodney panted, "I just thought of another reason."

"Yeah?" John panted back as he leaned over, bracing his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath from running. Rodney nodded avidly.

"Yeah. Another reason could be that I've gotten so much better at keeping up with you while we run. I'm getting better at it." John gave Rodney a thumbs up.

"Excellent reason, buddy." John straightened and smiled at him.

"What say we go get something from the mess?" Rodney nodded.

"Sounds good."

John clapped Rodney on the back and left his hand resting on Rodney's shoulder as they made their way towards the mess.

Rodney tried to refrain from smiling at the warm feeling in the pit of his stomach.

They were good reasons. Excelent reasons even, according to John.

That's what mattered.
