A/n: Listen to heart is a song sung by DHT. I don’t own Grey’s Anatomy or the character portrayed. I don’t even on the song by DHT, I just thought that would be an awesome title.
Summary: Derek and Rose have been dating for weeks and Derek is feed up with Rose’s gossiping and breaks up with her. In the midst of this entire break up, Derek learns that from his sexual activity with Meredith in the on call room, she is pregnant.

Derek Shepherd was in the operating room blocking out all forms of conversation in the midst of his operating room. Rose was talking about their date that happened last night and she couldn’t stop talking about it. Derek was focusing on the brain he was operating on when everyone started to giggle. He looked up from his microscope and looked at everyone giggling.
“What is so funny?” he asked
“Nothing Dr. Shepherd” replied the nurses
“Then why is everyone giggling?” he asked
The nurse’s stopped giggling and started to look at one another when one of the interns spoke up to the neurosurgeon.
“They were giggling because during your date last night you got wasted” replied Lexie
“I didn’t get wasted last night” replied Derek
“But boy did he give me some nice sex” said Rose as laughter erupted among the operating room.
Derek looked back into his microscope and finished the operation and left the room in a hurry, Lexie Grey followed him into the scrub room.
“Everything okay, Shepherd?” asked Lexie
Derek gave a sigh “I have been on a few dates with Rose and always the next day the entire surgical staff knows about my fucking sex life, thanks to that woman. Meredith would never tell, the only person she would tell would be her person and I would keep it to myself, but no every fucking nurse has to know details about mine and Rose’s date. Never once is it private.”
“Do you miss her?” asked Lexie
“Do I miss who?” asked Derek
“Do you miss my half-sister?” she asked
Derek nodded his head as took off his surgical mask. “Yes, I miss her, I just wish we were back together…happy”
Lexie gave a smile. “Well, I’m not the best person for advice, but I would talk to her after you break up with that crazy women called, Rose”
Derek gave a chuckle and nodded. “Your absolutely right I should break it off with that her and then talk to Meredith” He smiled “You are not a bad person to go to for advice, thanks though for the words of encourage”
Derek said as he grabbed another mask and went back into the operating room to tell Rose who was cleaning up the surgical room.
“Hey” replied Rose as she cleaned up the surgical room.
Derek looked at her and crossed his arms. “I respect what you do, but I just can’t take this anymore”
“What?” asked Rose as she stopped what she was doing and stared at Derek?
“You are making me look like a horny bastard ever time we are in the same room” snapped Derek
“And you don’t like that?” asked Rose
“I don’t like it and I think are so called relationship is over, I’m not in love with you as I thought I was, I’m in love with…” he trailed
“With that intern, Lexie?” snapped Rose “She is a baby, she is 26 and you are what 38?”
“It’s not Lexie, she is a friend and I love her half-sister, Meredith Grey who is 28 and I’m technically 37, if you must know” said Derek
“Wow, I’m getting dumped by a jerk who loves that whore named Meredith” replied Rose
“She is not a whore” said Derek
“She is a whore and you know it, Shepherd she is pregnant” said Rose
“Meredith Grey is not pregnant!” snapped Derek
“Oh really?” stated Rose “Then why was she on the maternity floor with Bailey and when they came out of the room Meredith was sick to her stomach and Bailey looked angry?”
Derek gave a sigh and just started to walk away from the conversation he didn’t want to hear anything else of people calling Meredith a whore. He was sick of that and they needed to look for a new person to call a whore. Meredith had been through a lot and she didn’t need that kind of shit. Derek walked out of the operating room and ran straight into Meredith.
“Hey” said Meredith
Derek looked at Meredith and replied in a sad tone. “Hey”
“I was looking for you” said Meredith
“I was looking for you also” said Derek
Meredith looked at Derek and took something out of her scrub pocket and headed it to him as her pager beeped. “I gotta go, I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and there is something special in the card for you”
“Thank you” he said as his frown turned into a smile “Can we have lunch?”
“Lunch would be great, I gotta go I’ll see you at 1:00 by the elevators?” asked Meredith
“1:00 it is” said Derek
Meredith blushed and headed in the other direction. Derek opened the card and something fell to the ground as he picked it up. It was a sonogram image and he read the birthday card.
Derek,
First of all I want to wish you a Happy Birthday and I just wanted to let you know that the sonogram in the card is a sonogram of our baby. Yes, Derek I’m pregnant and I know this is hard for me to say, but I thought it would be best to tell you in a card.

Derek read the card and looked at the sonogram image and just stared at it for a few minutes as he heard voices whispering as they passed by. Among one of the passer bys was the Chief. Richard stood behind Derek looking at the sonogram. Derek just stood there motionless as Richard finally spoke.
“Shep?” asked Richard
Derek was lost in a trance and didn’t hear Richard’s voice. Richard spoke his name again and Derek finally snapped out of the trance. “Huh?”
“Are you okay?” asked a curious Richard
Derek bit his lower lip as he placed the sonogram into the card and sighed. “It’s Meredith”
“Well, how about we go to my office and talk about this in private?” asked Richard
Derek didn’t say a word he just nodded in agreement as he followed his boss into the direction of where his office was. The two of them entered the office and Derek took a seat in one of the chairs in front of Richard’s desk.
“What about Meredith?” Richard asked as he sat down
Derek bit his lower lip and didn’t speak a word for a minute. “Meredith is pregnant” was the only thing he could get out of his month.
“You got Ellis Grey’s daughter pregnant? You got a first year resident pregnant?” started an angry Richard.
“Richard, I’m sorry I didn’t expect that to happen” said Derek
“I can’t control what my attending’s do in their personal lives, but I promised to keep an eye out for Meredith and I’m sorry to say this, but…” Richard started as he trailed off. Derek waiting for the worse to come out of Richard, but he was surprised what Richard had to say. “I hope you don’t keep it, I’m a medical professional and I’m against abortion, but I think it would be acceptable if you guys got rid of it”
Derek snapped back at Richard. “It is Meredith’s choice, Richard and if she wishes to keep it you will have to respect it”
“I will respect if she wants to keep it, but I’m also looking out for her career this is the start of a successful career for her and I don’t think a baby will be the best for her” replied Richard
Derek got up and shook her head. “It is her decision and not mine, I will have her talk to you about her options, but right now she is happy, this is the first time I have seen her happy in the last year”
Derek said as he walked out of Richard’s office and decided he needed to catch some breath and he headed outside. He needed to get his mind cleared and breathing in the cold air always seemed to relaxed his mind and he needed to get this conversation out of his mind.
