Anna & Holly
Anna’s eyes fluttered open as she tried her best to adjust them to the harsh morning sunlight. Once she could see clearly she focused her eyes on the sleeping form laying next to her tangled in white cotton sheets. She reached across the bed until her hand glided down a smooth, bare, porcelain arm. “Maybe it wasn’t a dream after all.” she mumbled. “Holly?” she called out softly. “Holly, are you awake?”
“Mmm.” was the only response she got.
“Holly?” she called out again moving closer to her. “Awake up.”
Holly turned over onto her back. “Anna.” she breathed out. “what time is it?”
“Morning.” she replied. “we should head back to the main house pretty soon.”
“Are you all right?” she asked as her eyes met those of her old lover’s. “you look...sad.”
Anna’s hand moved to touch Holly’s face, her fingertips delicately dancing over her skin. “I’m fine.” she assured her. “it’s just that I have to leave today.”
“Oh.” she sighed. “I didn’t realize that you were going to be leaving so soon.”
“Duty calls.”
“Yeah.” she breathed out. “duty always calls.”
“I would ask you to come with me.” Anna offered. “but we both know you won’t.”
“I can’t.” Holly replied as she placed her hand over Anna’s and moved it down to her lips placing a soft kiss against her palm. “It wouldn’t be fair.”
“Unfair to who, Holly?” she asked. “to you?”
“Yes.” she answered. “it wouldn’t be fair to me. We came here to get the jewels and we were going to split the profit fifty-fifty and then you were going off to your next job and I’m going to return to the Bahama’s.”
“You never answered my question.”
“What question?”
“Why would it be unfair to you?” Anna asked again. “what makes it more unfair to you than it does to me?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“You never want to talk about anything.” she replied. “that’s what makes this entire situation as difficult as it is because you never want to discuss things with me.”
“There’s nothing to discuss!” Holly insisted as she got up out of bed and began searching for her clothes. “I’m going home to the Bahama’s and you’re going back to playing superwoman.”
“Oh.” Anna said as she propped herself up on her elbow. “so that’s what this is all about.”
“What?!” she demanded to know. “what do you think this is about since you obviously know everything, Anna!”
“You don’t want me to play ‘superwoman’.”
“I don’t care what you do!” she said as she started to dress. “I just want to get back up to the main house before anyone stumbles upon us.”
Anna watched her as she dressed. “come on, luv, we both know that you care more than that.” she said. “Why don’t you adjust admit it?”
“There’s nothing to admit!”
“Oh, yeah?” she questioned. “then why did you wake me up last night and drag me all the way down here?”
“Well, that’s easy.” Holly replied zipping up her dress. “sex.”
“That’s certainly what you tried to make it into.”
“Anna.” she started. “I can’t do this...with you.”
“Do what?” she asked as she sat up in bed. “what is it exactly that you can’t do?”
“Any of this.” Holly said as she sat down on the edge of the bed and put on her heels. “I made a mistake by leading you down her last night. I’m sorry.”
Anna moved closer to Holly, wrapping the sheet around her body. “I think you’re just sorry because I’m leaving today.” she said. “you don’t want me to go, do you?”
“No.” she said softly. “I don’t.”
“Can’t you just tell me why?” she asked. “please, Holly.”
“I’m scared.”
“Okay, that’s a start.” Anna said. “why are you scared?”
Holly looked at Anna with tears in her eyes. “I’m afraid you’re going to go out on one of your top secret jobs and not come back.” she admitted. “I don’t want to lose you, I don’t think I could bear to lose another person I love.”
She smiled as she wiped away a few of Holly’s tears. “Incase you’ve forgotten, since the last time we saw each other a few months ago in Prague, I do love you.” she said. “I’ll join you in the Bahama’s as soon as this job is done. I promise.”
