Chapter1: Jacob Bradley

I was on the school bus, staring out the stained window, watching trees and houses go by. I was thinking about what was going to happen to be on my birthday today. I didn’t really enjoy my birthday for a couple of reasons:

1. No one in my family cares about my birthday.
2. Nobody ever comes.
3. It’s September 11.

Yeah, people think that I’m cursed or something. Some of my “friends” won’t even talk to me anymore, except when they’re asking for lunch , pencil , or paper.

Suddenly, I noticed my best friend, Aaron, was talking to me. I think he was talking about a website showing woman on it. All I did was nod my head and smile. And when he laughed, I laughed.

“Rico, look” said Aaron pointing to the front of the bus.
There was a girl. But not just a girl, this girl was my friend and my crush. I had know her since I was six.

“She’s coming are way” said Aaron. I pushed him out of the seat next to me and he landed in the row next to mine.

“Hey Rico” said my crush, Mandy, sitting down next to me.
“Hey” I said to her.
“Happy Birthday”.
“Thanks”.
“What are you going to do after school?” she asked.
“I don’t know. My Mom is out of town with her boyfriend and my brother, Brad, is throwing a party for himself” I answered.
“That sucks” she replied.

Me and Mandy talked about what we’re going to do when the school year is over. I told her that I was going to take acting lessons. She said she was going to take singing lessons. We stopped talking when the bus arrived at the school.

“See you after school” she said, and than walked off the bus.

Aaron walked right behind me.

“Sorry Rico, but I don’t think I might come to your birthday today. My mom has to take me to the doctors and I think I’ll be there all day”.

“It’s okay. No one comes anyway” I replied. Aaron looked at me with a sad face. He looked down, than up.

“Why don’t you invite Mandy?” He asked.
“Yeah!!!!” I said in excitement.
“I’ll ask her after school” I added.

Me and Aaron got off the bus. We than walked to the cafeteria and got some breakfast. After that, we sat down at a lunch table.

“So, what are you going to do when school is over?” I asked.
“Well, I might tryout for baseball” he answered.

When we were done with breakfast, we walked to the courtyard and sat on the bench. When the bell ranged, we went to our classroom and waited for the school day to end. Well, Aaron and Mandy wanted the day to end, I just wanted to stay. School was actually better than home.
At home, my brother would beat me everyday. He doesn’t even care if his friends hurt me or not.

When the school day ended, I took the walked home with Mandy instead of take the bus.

“Hey Mandy, can you come over to my house today. I’ll have nothing to do if I’m by myself?” I asked.
“Sure, I got nothing to do either” she answered.
“Well, she you later tonight” she added and than left.

Now I was alone. I hate when I’m alone. Only sometimes I like being alone when I’m sad or mad.

I walked the rest of the cold road home. When I got home, I was suddenly jumped by my brother.

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 1 for good luck” my brother said punching me 10 times in the face.

When he left the house, I walked to the bathroom and washed the blood dripping from my nose. I hate when Brad gives me my birthday punches. And they’re suppose to be on your arm not your face.

When I finished washing my face, I ran up the stairs and went straight to my room. My room was the only place where I felt safe. Like no one could hurt me.

When I got there, I went on the computer and went on AIM. When on, the only people that were on were Mandy and Aaron. I talked to them for at least an hour. When I was done, I went to sleep until 7 o’ clock. But what I didn’t no was what was going to happen tonight to me. It was a complete mystery, but I had a feeling that it was not going to be anything good.
