Harmless Flirting?

Chase sighed deeply as he packed up his things. He had finished with the case file, and was getting ready to leave. He was tired, and didn’t want to be anywhere near the hospital for a while. Their latest case was almost too much to bear, and he finally knew how Cameron could get so attached to patients.

A 10 year old child was brought in, complaining about chest pains, a headache, and trouble with his speech. During all the tests, Chase had become quite attached to him. They joked about comic books, and which superhero was better. Then it all came crashing down when the boy slipped into a seizure. After it stopped, he slipped into a coma. Wilson was called in, to see if it was cancer-related. And true enough, it was. He diagnosed that the young boy’s cancer was so far along, he would have less than a week left. Chase had to leave the room, for fear of House seeing his emotion.

He had sat in the conference alone, for an hour, just crying. Even though he was a doctor, Chase still couldn’t understand how someone so young, could die. It wasn’t fair, he had barely enough experienced what life had to offer, either bad or good. When the tears dried up, he forced himself to say goodbye to the boy before he was taken home. It was painful, but he knew he would be happier at home.

And that brought him to where he was now. His young friend had just left, and he was tired, wanting to get away from people. Wrapping a scarf around his neck, Chase pushed the door open and headed for the elevator. He was so focused on getting home, that he didn’t even hear the footsteps behind him. He nearly jumped out of his skin when a hand touched his shoulder. Chase spun around, and saw Cameron smiling.

“Daydreaming or something?” She asked, even though she knew full well what Chase was thinking about.

“Something like that. Not staying late tonight?” Chase yanked the strap on his backpack, pulling it back onto his shoulder.

“No. I’m done all the work I can stand. And House can do the rest, or just make me do it tomorrow. Hey, what are you doing now? Wanna get a drink or something? I’ve got nothing planned.”

Chase thought for a moment. His first instinct was to decline, and just go home, curl into a ball and sleep. But a drink would be nice and him and Cameron hadn’t really spent anytime together in awhile.

“Um, sounds good. I just have to go home and change. How about I pick you up in about an hour?”

Cameron smiled. “How about I pick you up in an hour? I do have the ability to pick up my date, you know.” She let the word date hang in the air for a moment, and when Chase didn’t disagree or dismiss it, she smiled wider, and pressed the down button on the elevator.

The two waited for the doors to open, and when they did, slipped inside, and waiting to be taken down to the ground floor. Once outside, they both headed to their own cars. Feeling flirtatious, Cameron sent Chase’s phone a text message, before driving home. On the way, she decided what to wear.

Chase turned the ignition in his car, and before he could shift to drive, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He saw that there was a new message.

"Picking you up might not be the only thing I initiate this evening."

Flipping the phone closed, Chase cleared his throat, and attempted to not think about what she could be talking about, while he drove home.
