Booth looked up from his drink to see Temperance watching him. He turned around to make sure that there wasn't something more interesting behind him and then looked at her again. He smiled. "Come to gloat?"
She shook her head and walked over. "No, not at all." She sat down and ordered a drink before resting her elbows on the bar and studying him some more. "I just heard about you and-"
"Don't...Don't say her name, okay?"
"Why not?"
"Because I don't want to hear it right now."
She shrugged and moved back when her drink was served. She stared into the bottom of the glass for a moment, trying to find some words of comfort that would help her friend. Eventually she decided that honesty would be best.
"I don't know what to say."
He smiled. "That's nothing new."
"What's that supposed to mean?" She wasn't sure whether to pout or stomp out and forget about him and his problems.
"It means that you're not good with emotions. I'm pretty sure I've told you that before."
She sighed and took a sip of the drink that had been nursed long enough. "Yeah, it's frustrating."
At that admission, Booth looked up in surprise. "Really? I thought you were happy being above and beyond the rest of the world in smarts. Untouchable...that's how I see you. Frail human emotions don't hurt gods, right?"
"I'm not a god."
"Bones, you have more knowledge in your little finger than I have in my entire body."
"That's not true. You know things that I don't. You know how to comfort the grieving and solve crimes. You know how to trust your instinct and go forward with your life based on hunches. I always have to know what an outcome is before I do anything and..." She shook her head. "Sorry, I didn't mean to do that."
"Do what? You're allowed to vent sometimes. I'm feeling pretty honored that you're letting it out with me." He reached over to brush back a strand of hair from her cheek, but stopped and let his hand fall.
"What's wrong with me?"
"Nothing's wrong with you, Temperance. You're wonderful."
She turned and looked at him. "Then why can't I comfort you? Why can't I make things better for you when you're hurting?"
Booth sighed. "We went over this. People know different things. This just isn't your thing."
"No, you don't understand. I can't comfort you because I don't feel bad about this."
He raised an eyebrow and wondered where she was going with her train of thought. "You don't?"
"No. I think that maybe I was jealous of her because she had you in ways that I wished I could. You know, it's natural to wish for the unknown because our minds automatically link the unknown with 'better' even though-"
"Stop...just don't talk anymore." He leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips.
She turned and moved forward to slide off of her stool and press herself between his legs. She moaned slightly.
At the sound, he backed away, remembering where they were. "PDA isn't really my thing." He smiled. "We could go for a walk."
She nodded and moved so he could get his coat. He left the money for both drinks on the bar and walked out with her into the cool night air. "So Booth...are you going to tell me what happened?"
"Sure...are you sure you want to hear it?"
"Absolutely."
