Finally Release

Malcolm Reynolds walked through his ship at the late hours of the night. His crew was asleep, safe in their rooms. It was time for him to get some rest. They had taken in a nice payload, ate a nice meal and were heading for a pick-up. He was tired, exhausted was more like it, and he wanted to sleep. He climbed down the ladder to his room and rested calmly below. As he finished unbuttoning his shirt, he heard something. He walked further into his room and came face to face with…a girl?

The girl screamed and reeled back. “Ahhhh! What’s going on!? Who are you!? Where am I!?”

Malcolm raised a hand towards her and tried to calm himself a well as the girl. “Now, you just relax, okay? No one’s gonna hurt you.”

“Who are you? What is this? Where am I?” She stumbled backwards when Mal advanced. “Don’t. P-please don’t.”

“Listen kid, I’m not gonna hurt you.”

“I’m n-no kid. I’m 21. You c-can’t be far from that.”

“No, I’m not, but I’m in a more stable state than you at the moment. Makes me seem older.” Suddenly, there was a loud clanging up above and, in a few seconds, the whole crew was in his cabin. “Jayne, don’t do anything stupid.”

“Why do you always think that I’m going to do the stupid thing?” Jayne’s gun was trained on the frightened girl as the others pushed past him.

“Who’s this? Get yourself married again Cap’n?” Kaylee joked as he surveyed the newcomer.

“She cries inside. Lost. No more world. From the Earth That Was,” River explained to all who could understand.

“Boy, what is she doing down here!?” Mal snarled at Simon. Simon rolled his eyes.

“In case you haven’t noticed, but we’re all down here, and she was the one who heard the screams first.”

“Okay, this is all really sentimental and all, but I really want to go home now. So could you just tell me where I am?” The girl said anxiously.

Mal turned back to her, “You’re on Serenity.”

“Is that a plane or something?”

“It’s a ship.”

“Not like any boat I’ve ever seen. Must be some calm waters.”

“What are you talking about? This is a ship, that flies. In space?”

“Funny. Why all the gravity? And how did NASA fund this one, and accidentally throw me on?”

“NASA? Girl, what are you talking about?”

“What day is it?”

“July 16.”

“What year?” She asked warily.

“Twenty-five oh six,” Mal paused. “What’s your name?”

“Kristin. 2506? 2506? You’re kidding right?”

“Afraid not. Why, what in hell is the matter with you?”

River held her head and started to chant, “The Earth That Was. The Earth That Was.”

“Where are you from?” Zoe asked, stepping forward.

“Wisconsin? United States of America? North America? EARTH!” The girl sat down and looked at the astonished crew. “What is wrong with you guys? Haven’t you ever heard of the U.S.? We are the most powerful nation in the world. And, uh, hello? If NASA funded this expedition, you’d have to take off from Florida.”

“Earth? You’re from Earth? But that’s impossible. No one’s lived there for four hundred years.” Malcolm turned to Simon, “Does she seem right to you?”

Simon opened his mouth to speak, but Jayne interjected, “Okay, we can solve this. Kid when were you born?”

“How’s that gonna help?” Kaylee asked.

“December 26, 1988.”

“See. There you go. 198- What!?” Jayne raised his gun at her again. “Impossible.”

“What was the last year you remember?” Mal asked slowly approaching her.

“2006. August 2, 2006. Senior year at my high school was going to start at the end of the month. My mom was due home by noon. My brother was taking a shower.” She looked at the crew, “I don’t feel so good.” She fell back, unconscious.

Malcolm sighed, “Great. Doc, would you mind getting the infirmary ready? Seems we have a patient.”

The girl slowly came to as Mal stood to address her. “You were out a good three hours. I didn’t think it’d be that long.”

“Am I dreaming?” She asked.

“It’s Kristin, right? Well Kristin, I hate to tell you that you are wide awake. Well, except for the whole coming out of unconsciousness thing.”

Kristin chuckled slightly. “I guess I’m never going home, huh? Never going back to my world.”

“Afraid not. Earth got too crowded, too harmful. No more room to live, no more air to breathe. What I’m curious about, is how you traveled 500 years into the future. You don’t seem like the type to have on a ship. Well, neither does River, but she stays on just the same. You lot confuse me. Showing up here on my ship, problems unknown, worlds far away. Just don’t seem right.”

“Sorry sir, for the inconvenience. I can be dropped off at the next stop if you’d like.” Kristin sat up and swung her legs from the medical bed. She hopped off and started to walk out, staggering just a bit.

“Now wait just one gorram minute. You leave this ship and you’ll die. You know for sure you don’t know our worlds, so don’t waltz around actin’ like you do.” Mal grabbed her arm and pulled her back towards him. She stumbled and he caught her, pulling her to his chest. “You seem to have a calm of mind. I can’t help noticin’ that you are a bit wary of men too.”

“This situation isn’t helping any,” She said with a smile.

“No, but it pleases me some.” Mal shifted slightly, but didn’t release the girl. “You trust me any?”

“Maybe a bit.”

“Good. You see, we haven’t had a woman on this ship that we weren’t related to or felt as if we were in a very long time. You come waltzing in here and you have Jayne staying in his bunk for hours at a time, no need for me to tell you what he’s doin’.” Mal grinned as Kris blushed, “Yeah, not one for secrets that one. I’ve been told that I can be a bit…what’s the word? Reserved. The ladies of the worlds find me suitable, but hard to handle.”

“That right? You seem pretty docile to me, if it’s not too bold to say.”

“Maybe its because I like you. Ever think of that? Five hours you’ve been on this ship and I already want to take you back to my room. I know that a decent man wouldn’t, which is why I won’t, but do keep in mind that I would very much like to.”

“Yes sir. I’ll keep that in mind for sure,” She glanced up at him, “Can you relax your grip on my arms a little? It kinda pinches.”

“Oh, sorry,” He softened his hold, “That better?”

“Much. Since you feel that, at the moment, there is no use for me, can I get something to eat?”

Mal grinned as he released her and showed her to the door, “Of course, need you in top notch condition to be on this ship.”

“I would have never guessed. With you as the Captain, I guess everyone’s in great shape.”

“Not as much as you’ll be.”

“I’ll take you up on that.” She smiled as she brushed his shoulder, walking past him into the kitchen.
