It had been two months since Miranda and life on Serenity had about returned to normal. Some changes had happened, the warrants against the Tam's had ended, they were no longer deemed a threat. The Alliance would not bother them anymore. Inara stayed on board, not wanting to return to the Companion Training House, much to the joy of Mal. Zoe had been keeping a very close eye on her husband after the reavers almost took him from her, he was still very sore after the big harpoon hit him in his middle, luckily it had come in on a weird angle not going though him. Simon and Kaylee finally stopped dancing around each others’ feelings and started up together. Jayne well... was Jayne.
The only person who really changed due to Miranda was River. After what they saw on the tape she started feeling better,
no more drugs, she had no more fits, she was much more coherent these days and she'd finally come to terms with her abilities. She was an assassin, a government made assassin, but also a reader, which came in handy when the crew was in tight spots. She was not only better mentally but her appearance had changed too. Her posture showed more confidence then she had before, she was groomed better, and for the past few weeks had shown an interest in being useful around Serenity. She'd been filling in as pilot until Wash had gotten 100% better, which she felt would be soon. What she really wanted to do was go out on jobs with Mal, Zoe and Jayne. She knew with her reading and fighting abilities she would do well there. The problem was convincing both Simon and the captain.
It was early in the morning and Mal would still be on the bridge finishing his shift. She figured this would be as great a time as any to ask. River made her way towards the bridge. She made sure the captain heard her cuz every time he didn't, he'd draw his gun on her. She found that quite funny most of the time, but this time she wanted to be taken seriously. River cleared her throat, taking him from his thoughts.
“Captain, may I ask a question?” she asked with a nervous look both on her face and in her eyes.
Mal turned around to see River standing in the doorway. He motioned her towards the second pilot's chair saying. “Sure, little one. What's on your mind?”
River took a seat and looked over at Mal. “Wash will be back piloting in a week, which means I won't have a job to do anymore. I want to earn my keep like everyone else here. I want to a be a back-up gun for when you go out on jobs.”
He didn’t say anything right away. He knew she could handle herself pretty good, she proved that at the Maidenhead and against the reavers. But the problem was her brother, who could be such a hundun when it came to his sister.
“Yes he can, Captain.” River said smiling as Mal's head shot up. “Simon still sees her as a 14 year old child, and she's not a child, and she thought it's your boat, your rules so isn't your decision final?”
Little witch had a point, his ship his rules. But Simon wouldn't forgive him if anything happened to River. Then again, Jubal Early sneaking onto the ship had proved that Serenity wasn't safe either. On second thought, an extra gun hand could prove mighty useful. River was sitting there waiting for his answer.
“Ok mei mei. We'll give it a shot, but I ain't promisin’ nothin’. If the next job is a low-risk one, ya can come with on a test run. And if everything goes shiny, we'll discuss something a little more permanent, dong ma?”
River sat in the co-pilot's chair with a giant smile on her face. “She understands, Captain. Xie xie.”
As Mal turned to leave. “One more thing. Even on the first job, the no touching guns rule still applies til I say otherwise. Got it?”
River nodded in response and turned her head to look out into the black.
Mal left the bridge and headed towards his bunk, groaning. “Wo de ma, what have I gotten myself in to?” Before dropping down into his bunk to get a few hours sleep.
River could barely contain her excitement after what Mal had told her, She wasn't worried with how Simon would react. He
would always see her as that 14 year old child her parents sent away. But River knew she could never go back to being her again. That child was dead and now this 18 year old, almost sane assassin was in her place. She was so happy, not with her talk with Mal, but with everything. River let her mind go back to the last two months since Miranda.
Wash had been seriously hurt after the crash. Thank god that the reavers had bad aim that day. Instead of the giant harpoon going thru Wash, it came in sideways hitting his middle. They had to leave him on the ship. They couldn't risk hurting him some more, but luckily the reavers were more interested in them and not the ship. Afterwards, Zoe wouldn't leave Wash's side while he was getting better. The only time she left was to go on jobs, but River felt that Zoe would have to stop going out on jobs soon.
Simon and Kaylee finally got together and it was about time too. Both deserved to be happy, and River felt better that
Simon was with Kaylee, he'd given up so much for her. Inara and Mal still danced the endless dance around their feelings
for each other, neither really saying anything about them.
And then there was Jayne. What would he think about her coming out on jobs? Since both her and Simon arrived on Serenity, he thought the ship would be better off without them. Even after Ariel, Jayne still thought that. But after Miranda, after seeing River standing there amongst the dead reavers she’d just killed, he changed his mind. River had felt something from Jayne the minute the bay doors opened, feelings of awe, surprise and relief. But there was something else that was directed at her, some kind of hunger. The same hunger she would feel coming from Zoe and Wash. The main difference between the hungers was that Jayne's felt darker and more intense. Every single time she'd thought about it, she would get butterflies in the pit of her tummy. And the thing that interested her was, was she was feeling something towards Jayne, but didn't know what it was? All she knew was that it was her own and not from someone else on board.
River stared out into the black, wondering what tomorrow would bring for them and how Simon would react. She thought with a smirk on her face, it’s gonna be an interesting day tomorrow.
