To Catch a Spy
May 2003

Greg Ayala slowly re- read the message that he had downloaded from the Maquis Central
Command. ‘Oh this is not good, not good at all,' he thought to himself. The message was blunt
and to the point: the Cardassian military had successfully infiltrated several Maquis vessels by
surgically altered themselves to look like Bajorans, then betraying the Maquis to the Cardassian
High Command.

‘Dear God that would explain why we have lost so many ships in the last three months.' His
skin scrawled at the thought that someone on the Crazy Horse was a Cardassian spy. ‘Damn,
damn, damn. We picked up several new recruits on our last stop over. God, it could be one of
them or a longtime member of the crew.'

"Is there something wrong, Gregor?"

Ayala whirled around, his hand dropping to his phaser. "Geez kid, don't do that!"

Gerron Tem flinched and took a step backwards, his eyes wide with fear. "S-sorry, I didn't
mean to s-startle you, its just, you looked s-so angry and..." The young Bajoran trailed off into an
embarrassed silence rubbing an ugly tattoo on his wrist unconsciously.

Ayala sighed, cursing himself in his native Spanish for scaring the young man. "It's alright
Gerron. Got some bad news from home that's all." His eyes narrowed has he stared at the young
man in front of him. He knew that Gerron was a Bajoran because the ship's medic, Ken Dalby,
had to do a full DNA scan when he had been brought aboard the Crazy Horse. The Cardassian's
had a nasty habit of infecting Bajorans prisoners with lethal viruses that could wipe out a ship
within a few days. Fortunately, Gerron had tested negative.

"Actually, there is something you can do for me. Can you find Ken Dalby and tell him the
salmon are running." Greg requested. He knew that Ken would understand the message and
come see him immediately. "And I want you to come back with him. Alright?"

"Sure."

"Hey little brother, what's upKen Ken Dalby asked a few minutes later has he and Gerron
squeezed themselves into Ayala cramped office. The First Officer of the Crazy Horse gave Dalby
a grim look and tossed the padd at him. Dalby's expression grew grimmer and grimmer has he
read the padd and curses started to fill the air.

"Let me know when you run out of words, I'm sure I know some that you don't know." Ayala
said tiredly taking the padd back.

"Hell and damnation! Does the Captain know about this?" Dalby demanded worriedly, running
his hand through his dark hair.

"Not yet, I want to get a plan in place before dropping this bombshell on him." Ayala replied.
He knew that Chakotay was going to understandably upset. Hell, that was an understatement.
The native of Dorvan 5 was going to go ballistic when he found out that someone aboard his
ship was a Cardassian spy.

"Can someone tell me what's going?" Gerron asked softly, looking at both men.

Wordlessly Ayala thrust the padd into the young man's hands while he and Ken tried to work
out a plan to catch the spy. Bajoran curses filled the air when Gerron finished reading the padd.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" Gerron asked, his eyes glittering with anger. He owned
Chakotay a debt that he could never repay since the crew of the Crazy Horse had rescued him
from an assured death in a Cardassian labour camp.

"I think it might be best if we went to Chakotay and tell him about the spy. After he calms
down I'm sure we'll come up with a plan to catch him or her." Ken finally said after half an hour
of brainstorming. He was not looking forward to that conversation. None of them were.

******

"Stupid piece of junk! Come off, dammit!" Tom Paris cursed has he tried to unscrew a joiner
coupling inside an access hatch in engineering. "Crap, that hurt." He sucked on a bloody
knuckle.

"Do you require any assistance?" A calm voice asked.

‘That voice, where do I know if from?' Tom thought to himself. "Yeah I do. Pass me some
silicon grease and a number three sonic screwdriver, would ya." He replied out loud holding out
a grimy hand. Both items were placed in his hand. "You must be one of the new recruits, I'm
Tom, chief helmsman, and you are?"

"My name is Tuvok. I'm currently assigned to engineering."

‘Bingo!' Tom thought to himself has he wrestled with the coupling. ‘A Starfleet spy, just
wonderful.' "May want to steer clear of B'Elanna if she starts cursing in Klingon," he offered
politely, giving no outward indication that he knew Tuvok. "She's got one hell of a temper and
she kinda takes it out on the nearest person or object." He gave a grunt has the coupling finally
came lose, thinking rapidly. "What a damn mess. Pass me a new coupling and my soldering kit.
It's going to take me a while to sort out this mess."

"Is there anything I can do to help?"

"No. It's just going to take me sometime to sort this mess out." Tom repeated, mentally urging
the Vulcan to leave.

"Very well."

Five minutes later, Tom stowed his tools away and hurried to the Captain's Ready room. He
knew his husband was going to go berserk when Tom revealed this news. He barely glanced at
Ayala, Dalby and Gerron when he entered the room. All three were trusted friends.

"Chakotay, we have a problem. There's a Starfleet spy aboard the ship."

"Wonderful, just fucking wonderful. How many more spies are aboard my ship?" Chakotay
spat, clenching his fists in anger. Tom could feel the rage radiating from him.

"Spies?" Tom questioned darting a quick look at the other three men. "Who?"

Ayala tossed him a padd and gestured for him to read and Tom let out a low whistle when he
finished.

"Who's the Starfleet spy?" Chakotay asked through clenched teeth, his mind reeling from the
fact that there were two spies aboard his ship.

"The Vulcan, Tuvok."

"How did you find out?" Dalby asked curiously, leaning against the wall.

"Growing up in the Admiral's house meant I was going to fleet functions since I was a little
kid. That was the only time he ever paid any attention to me was when he wanted to show me off
has one the future leaders of StarFleet. You know, the next Admiral Paris." Tom said bitterly
thinking about his childhood and teenage years. "So has a result I meet everybody who was an
up and coming star in Starfleet and good old dad would made damn sure I would remember
whom those people were so I could greet them properly."

"Did he see you?" Ayala asked anxiously.

"No. I was inside an engineering hatch and I made damn sure he never saw me." Tom replied
tossing the padd back to Ayala. "Do you guys have any clue who the Cardassian might be? And
do you have a plan?"

"Not a clue who it could be and we're working on a plan right now to catch the traitor,"
Chakotay replied grimly giving his lover a sharp look. "You need to radio the Central Command
and tell them about Tuvok. God knows how many other Starfleet spies are in the fleet." He
paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts and pushing aside his anger. "We still need a plan
to find the Cardassian spy."

"I think I have an idea." Gerron said in a timid voice. Ayala gave him an encouraging smile and
the young Bajoran took a deep breath before continuing. "We know that there are five other
Bajorans aboard the ship. Why don't we tell everyone that I've come down with some unknown
highly contagious pathogen and we have to take blood samples from the entire crew to make
sure that they're not infected."

"That's a great idea. We all know that the Cardassian have a nasty habit of infecting Bajoran
prisoners with God knows what and this will work to our advantage. No one will suspect a
thing." Ken said enthusiastically, thinking rapidly. " I even have something that will make you as
sick as a dog for a few hours just to make it convincing."

"Ken don't go over board." Ayala cautioned noticing Gerron's alarmed face.

"Don't worry Gerron, we'll make it up to you when we get into port, won't we little brother."
Dalby said too cheerfully. Ayala sighed, then nodded. "Come on kid, we have to make a trip to
the infirmary. You'll be feeling sick in no time." Tom almost laughed at the panicky expression
on Gerron's face has Ken steered the young man out of Chakotay's ready room.

"Greg, Tom, I want both of you to monitor all incoming and out going communication calls
and signals. If it looks suspicious I want to know about, and start running a complete systems
check . Be careful, I don't want these people to know that we're on to them." Chakotay ordered
running his hand through his short hair. " Greg, search his quarters-discreetly of course- and get
someone you trust to shadow Tuvok at all times."

"What do you plan to do with Tuvok?" Tom asked after Ayala left the ready room. There was
no need to mention the fate of the Cardassian spy. His fate was a forgone conclusion.

"Hand him over to the Central Command and let them deal with him." Chakotay replied,
suddenly feeling very tired. He sighed blissfully has Tom started to rub his shoulders and drifted
for a minute, relaxing under those talented hands before regretfully pulling away. "Duty calls
Poocuh."

Part Two
Please see Part one for Disclaimers

Exactly three hours later, Gerron Tem cried out in pain and collapsed in the mess hall,
coughing up a vile black liquid. Ken Dalby immediately whisked Gerron into isolation and
quarantine the entire mess hall. No one muttered a word of protest when Ken and Chell took
blood samples from the crew in the mess hall. Too many had friends aboard other ships die
when an unknown pathogen erupted in their mists.

"Captain, Dalby here. I need to see you right away." Dalby's grim voice echoed through the
bridge. The tension level on the bridge went up a notch.

"Right away Dalby. Ayala, you're with me. Paris, you have the bridge." Chakotay replied
curtly. A minute later they were inside the small infirmary. Gerron gave them a watery smile has
they entered the room.

"Who is it?" Chakotay asked getting straight to the point, mentally bracing himself.

"Seska."

"Seska? She's been a part of my crew almost since the beginning." Chakotay said in a stunned
voice, suddenly feeling very cold. "Are you sure?"

"I ran the test three times just to be on the safe side. DNA and blood doesn't lie, Captain."
Dalby replied stiffly tossing the padd at him. "Look for yourself."

"No, I believe you Ken." Chakotay replied, not looking at the padd. "Where is she?"

"Mess hall along with most of the crew." Ayala replied curtly. Three quarters of the crew had
been in the mess hall when Gerron had collapsed.

"The Vulcan?"

"Mess Hall as well."

"Good. We'll kill two birds will one stone." Chakotay said in a grim voice. "Greg, get a team
together and search her quarters and her work station. Wait, did you find anything in Tuvok's
quarters?"

"Nothing." Ayala replied in a frustrated voice. "We have to tell B'Elanna Chakotay. If Tuvok's
been working alone in engineering, he could have planted something down there. Same goes for
Seska. B'Elanna would spot anything that looks out of place. " He paused before leaving and
gave him a grim smile. "Good luck with B'Elanna."

"She's a WHAT?" Chief Engineer B'Elanna Torres shouted, her face flushing red with fury.
"That bitch, I'll kill her! And that Vulcan, I'll kill him as well!"

"Don't worry. She'll get what's coming to her, but right now I need you and your people to
start checking the engines, the communications relays, everything." Chakotay ordered harshly,
grabbing her arm before she could storm off. "Do you understand me?"

"Yeah, I understand." B'Elanna said shaking off his arm. "What about Tuvok?"

"I'm turning him over to the Central Command. They can deal with him." Chakotay replied.
"The minute you find anything unusual call me. and for Spirits sakes, be careful."

"I need Tom down here. He knows this place almost as well has I do." B'Elanna requested,
tucking a lock of hair behind her ear, and pushing back her anger. "We'll find it, Chakotay, even
if I have to tear this place apart with my bare hands."

*******

B'Elanna, I think I found it." Tom called softly an hour later staring a tangled mess of wires
and circuits. He gently picked through the unruly mess until he was holding a small circuit board
the length of his index finger, connected to different four wires.

B'Elanna peered over his shoulders and scowled. "How did you see that?" She gently took it out
of his hand and studied the offending object. "Damn thing could have gotten us all killed."

"No kidding. It was attached to several communication wires. Hold on a second, I'm gonna cut
it damn thing off." Tom replied thumbing on his plasma cutter to the lowest setting and deftly
cut all four wires.

B'Elanna let out a breath she wasn't aware that she was holding. She took it over to her desk
and scanned it with a tri-corder watching readings intently. "It's Cardassian. It looks like some
kind of transmitter."

"Shit." Tom cursed, peering at the readings over her shoulder. "I have a really bad feeling
about this. Paris to Chakotay."

"What is it?"

"We found it Captain. We think it's a transmitter of some sort. I would strongly recommend
changing our course and getting as far away as possible from this location." Tom said with a
sense of foreboding.

"Already done. Tom, meet me in front the mess hall. B'Elanna, make sure the engines,
weapons and shields are running at one hundred percent." Chakotay ordered grabbing his phaser,
and commed his First Officer. "Ayala, get your security team to the mess hall on the double and
fill them in on the situation."

Two minutes later, Chakotay, Tom, Ayala and his security team where standing in front of the
mess hall doors. Chakotay could see rae rage glittering in the eyes of the security team.

"Alright listen up," Chakotay said without preamble, taking the small transmitter from Tom.
"You know the situation that we are facing. Keep you weapons trained on Seska at all times, if
she tries anything, kill her. Greg, Tom, if Tuvok tries anything, drop him."

The crew of the Crazy Horse watched in nervous anticipation when the three men and the
security team entered the mess hall. It didn't escape his notice that Seska was sitting alone.
Murderous rage boiled up in him.

"Alright people listen up. I have a few announcements to make. First off, none of you were
infected by a virus. It was an elaborate scheme to catch two spies." A shocked hum went through
the room. "A lot of you know that in the last few months several Maquis vessels of have been
ambushed by Cardassian ships. I don't have to tell you the fate of our brothers and sisters
aboard those ships. The High Command discovered that several Cardassians have been
surgically altered to look like Bajorans." The room became deathly quiet and the Bajoran crew
members stared at Chakotay in horror. He slowly walked to the table were Seska was sitting.
"Outwardly you might be a Bajoran, but DNA doesn't lie Seska." He pointed his phaser at her,
aware that the security team mimicked his move.

"No, that's crazy Chakotay. I'm not a spy. How could you say that to me? It is true that I have
some Cardassian DNA in me but that's because I had Orkett's disease when I was a child. The
only way to cure me was to insert certain Cardassian chromosomes into my body to destroy the
disease." Seska explained quickly. "I swear by the prophets, I am not a spy." Tears swelled up in
her eyes. Inwardly she smiled seeing the unease on several faces and the whispered
conversations.

"She's lying." Ken Dalby said coldly, making his way into the mess hall. "There's no way you
had Orkett's disease when you were a child."

"What would you know about Orkett's disease?" Seska challenged wearily, her eyes suddenly
dry.

"Your body would have rejected the Cardassian chromosomes within a year, Seska." Dalby
said evenly. "You don't have any symptoms of an Orkett's disease survivor. You see Seska,
most people who survive Orkett's disease are bed ridden for the rest of their lives, because their
limbs have wasted away. Or they're blind, because their optical nerves were destroyed." He gave
Seska thin smiled. "You should have been more careful with your research."

Seska's face went white with rage, knowing that the game was up. Years of careful planning
ruined. Well not completely ruined. She still had an ace up her sleeve that they didn't know
about. Her cold laugh rang through the mess hall shocking everyone into silence.

"Well, you found me Chakotay and for all the good it will do you. They already know where
you are and it is just a matter of time before they get here." Seska hissed, a feral light glittering
in her eyes. "You might have caught me, but I've signed your death warrants."

"We found your little toy in engineering Seska." Chakotay replied holding up the transmitter.
He threw it at her and she automatically caught it. "The only thing the Cardassians are going to
find is your dead body floating in space."

Snarling in her native language she lunged at Chakotay only to drop to floor as six phaser
beams slammed into her. She was dead before she hit the floor.

"Take that piece of trash and throw her off my ship." Chakotay said coldly. Several crew
members dragged her lifeless body out of the mess hall.

"Wait a minute. You said there's another spy on the ship. Who is it?"

Chakotay caught Tom's eye and nodded.

Everyone quickly got out of Tom's way has he walked towards Tuvok. There was no emotion
on Tuvok's face has Tom stood in front of him, his phaser pointed directly at him. "You may not
remember me *Lieutenant* Tuvok, but I certainly remember you."

"Admiral Anderson's retirement party." Tuvok said a few moments of silence, remembering a
sullen teenager who spent several hours greeting guests.

"It's a small universe, isn't it." Tom said coldly. "What did they offer you Tuvok? Promotion,
money, the promise of your own ship one day? Or are you doing your duty has a loyal Starfleet
officer?"

Silence.

"Mr. Ayala, you will escort Lieutenant Tuvok to the infirmary and lock him the isolation unit
until further notice. I want a security detail watching him at all times." Chakotay ordered,
glaring at the Starfleet officer has he was escorted out of the room. "Alright people, get back to
your posts. Right now the ship is on Yellow Alert until we reach the badlands. Dismissed."

*****

"You know we dodged the bullet today don't you Chakotay?" Tom said later on, in their
quarters. The younger man was pacing around the room like a caged tiger working off nervous
energy.

"I know, Poocuh." Chakotay said calmly. "If it hadn't been for you, we probably would have
walked into a Starfleet ambush a few days from now."

"What about the other ships in the fleet? Not everyone had the upbringing that I did." Tom
ranted. "Who's going to protect them?"

"Forewarned is forearmed, Tom. The rest of the fleet is now aware that Starfleet is planting
spies in our mists and they will act accordingly."

"It's not enough." Tom shot back heatedly. "I have to do something!"

"And what would you do? Transfer back to Central Command and spend the rest of our life
behind a desk verifying each new recruit?" Chakotay shot back. "I know this is hard for you,
Poocuh, but you can't protect the universe. The only thing you can do is protect your own little
corner and have faith that other will do the same." He pulled the younger man into an embrace.
He could feel Tom's taut muscles under his hands. He stroked Tom's back, soothingly, until he
felt the tension leave the slim body. Tom sighed and slowly turned in Chakotay's embrace, and
leaned back into his husband's broad chest.

Together they watched the stars streak passed.
