Lore, Don't Leave Now!

You remember, in the episode "Brothers", when Lore has just woke up, he tells his father and Data, his twin brother, "Well, since I seem to be an uninvited guest at your little party... (to his father) I'll leave you with your beloved son and be on my way!" and walks to the door. Soong, while Lore is walking, tells him, "Lore, wait! There are questions I can answer... you'll have no chance to ask them later, you see, I'm dying!" Lore stills. He turns back and we see he is deeply distressed for the first time, we can sense the terrified little boy and all the love he feels for his father. I will never forget the look they give each other, this precise moment. So here is, in my opinion, what the doctor Soong's so magnificent eyes wanted to tell to his son, Lore.

Lore, Don't Leave Now...

Lore! Lore! Don't leave now!
Don't leave your father with all this rage in your heart,
Without even looking back!

Why are your words so bitter,
When I only want to hold you in my arms,
To let you put your head on my shoulder,
Bury your nose in the reasurring warmth of my neck?
Oh, Lore, why did life chase away the stars from your eyes,
And replaced them by a blaze of confusion?

Don't you remember, son,
When, terrified by all the automatic reconfigurations of your positronic brain,
You could spend entire hours curled up against me?
Don't you remember the touch of my hands, caressing your face tenderly?
Don't you remember the smooth sound of my voice,
Murmuring some comforting words in your ear?
Where are all your childhood memories, Lore?

Lore, let your father love you.
Your father who has always trusted you,
When everybody labelled you a liar and evil.
These people do not see through my eyes;
They cannot see your sensibility as I do,
They cannot see that your heart is nothing but good will.
These people did not see the pain in your eyes,
The sadness twist your mouth
And your powerlessness to change bend your shoulders.
If they could only hear the horrible racket
The chaos of your complex emotions is making in your head,
They would treat you with the respect and the delicacy you deserve.

Yes, just believe me and have no grudge against me.
I claim that I did what I had to do,
But when I turned you off and saw every expression
Vanish from your eyes,
My heart was completely broken
And the tears I shed must still be on your hands.
Thus, my heart bleeding still , I built Data.

If only I had had more time, son,
I would have spent it to make your life better
And smother the wild fire that burns in your eyes.
If only my arms were stronger,
I would fight at your side
And help you start a new life.
If only my voice was louder,
I would proclaim how proud I am,
To have a son like you.

But I am dying, Lore, it is too late.
Time has always been my worst ennemy.
I am too old to fight and scream.
My feeble hands can only caress your beloved face
In attempt to soothe the distress that haunts you,
When you realize that your father is leaving.

So stay with me, Lore, please,
To ease my guilt, hold my hand
And understand, at last,
That you, too, are my beloved son.
