New Year

“10 Seconds til New Years!” The MC announced. Sara looked at the full glass of champagne in her hand and fought back the tears. This had been a mistake. A stupid, reckless, very big mistake. And the hardest part of it all was that he played her and she fell for it. Not just here, but at Fox River too. Used her emotions to gain access to the infirmary, just so that he could escape with his brother and a few other dangerous convicts. Her career was in shambles, an inquiry cleared her of any wrong doing but privately many suspected her of helping Michael and Fox River had suspended her indefinably. She had spent the summer hiding out at her father's mansion outside of Chicago and thinking of Michael and the last time she had seen him. He had hesitated, holding her hand and stroking her skin, he held himself so close to her, any other con she would have had thrown out of the infirmary but with Michael she couldn't control herself and let him do as he wanted. Looking into her eyes, she should have known then it was goodbye but she was far too trusting to think he would use her so callously. But the solitude of the summer had allowed for long thoughts about Michael and his actions. She could forgive him the escape, now that Lincoln's lawyer Veronica had come forward with enough evidence to clear Lincoln's name. He hadn't committed murder, in fact the supposed victim was a live and well, living off the money he stole from others as well as funding his sister's campaign for the Presidency of the United States. She was no longer Vice President and was currently in her own Prison Cell in a Federal Maximum Security Women's Prison in Virginia, Lincoln was back in Chicago, after being granted immunity on the escape charges but Michael was still a wanted man. He had the remainder of his sentence for Armed Robbery to finish as well as the sentence he would receive for escaping and helping others to escape Fox River. The tacked 20 years onto C-Note's sentence when they caught him back in September, he was at Disneyland with his wife and kid when 20 armed federal agents surrounded them and arrested him. Sara had longed to see him and ask where Michael was but she didn't, instead she did nothing. And now here she was truly doing the most ridiculous thing she had ever done.

She was meeting him.

Three days before Christmas she was walking her dad's two Greyhounds when Jenny the housekeeper came to the back door and called her.

A package just arrived for you Miss. Tancredi.”

“Thanks, Jenny. I'll be up in a moment.” She wondered who was sending her a package...maybe Heather from college. They always sent gifts to each other at Christmas. Or maybe termination papers from Fox River...

She whistled for the dogs and headed back up to the house, stomping the snow off her boots and leaving them in the mudroom, where she hung her jacket up and then slipped on some slippers and found Jenny at the counter chopping zucchini for dinner.

“Your package is on the table by the front entrance.” Jenny said without looking up and Sara mumbled a thanks and went to look at it. UPS had delivered it, it originated from San Diego from a Harvey Armstrong. Sara furrowed her brow and tried to recall who he was, she didn't know anyone by that name or anyone in San Diego. She opened the pull tab and looked inside, the first thing she found was a white origami swan, somewhat flattened by the journey to Chicago but still obviously a swan. Her heart skipped a beat and she knew it was from Michael. A single folded piece of paper fell into her hand, along with a small gold key with red plastic trim on the handle part..

Box #3423

Was all that was typed on the paper. She wasn't sure what he was trying to tell her. Obviously there was something for her in Box #3423 but she wasn't sure how she was supposed to find the box that the key belonged too. It could be anywhere. She put the key in her pocket and folded up the letter and put it in her other pocket before bringing the envelope to her father's office and putting it through the paper shredder in there. She wasn't sure why she did that, she just felt like that was what she should do...she didn't want to leave any evidence that might lead the authorities to Michael. Then she went to her room to think.

Over the next two days she couldn't stop thinking about Box #3423 and where she could find it. She searched online to find out which bus stations, malls and airports had locker rentals available. She found that only O'Hare and Midway Airports had long term locker rentals. She assumed that Michael wouldn't leave anything for her in a locker that security cleared out every night, which is what the malls and bus stations did. She decided to go to the airports and see if she could find the locker, going on Christmas Eve day, hoping the rush of holiday travelers would keep anyone from noticing her. At Midway she parked her car in short term parking and made her way to the terminal. She stared at a map on the wall and tried to locate the locker sections, finally she gave up and asked at customer service.

“Can you tell me where I could find Locker #3400?” she asked, purposely giving the wrong number.

“We have 4 different locker areas but none of the lockers are numbered that high. Out highest number is 350.” The man behind the counter told her. Feeling a bit disappointed and a whole lot silly she went back to her car and made her way to O'Hare.

She once again parked in short term parking and entered the international terminal first. The crush of people there was almost overwhelming and she once again went to customer service.

“Which colour?' The pretty young lady asked.

“I'm sorry?” Sara responded confused by the question.

“Our lockers are all colour coded. Green here, red is here.” She said pointing to a map on the desk. “ And purple and orange are over here.”

“Thank you so much, I need the purple section.” She lied once again and made her way to the red locker section. It was located near British Airways. She looked at the numbers and located #3423 pulling the key from her pocket she slid it inside and twisted the key and opened the door. Laying inside was a brown envelope with a white origami flower sitting on top of it. Her heart hammered in her chest and her hands trembled, this was for her. She glanced around to make sure no one was watching and took the envelop and the flower to the nearest ladies washroom where she locked herself in the stall and opened the envelope. Inside was a fake passport, in the name of Hillary Montgomery, as well as driver's license, credit cards, Social Security card, bank cards and even a COSTCO membership in the name of Hillary Montgomery, the pictures were all of her. There were several hundred dollar bills in an elastic, $1500.00 in total, a list of PIN numbers for the bank cards and credit cards and a single sentence on the bottom of the paper.

Flamingo Resort, Panama City, New Year's Eve.

She took a deep breath and tried to calm her nerves put the ID in her wallet, stuffed the money into the bottom of her purse and folded the envelope up and stuffed that in as well. She dialed her her father's number on her cell phone as she began to walk out of the terminal.

“Dad...Hi. I won't be home for Christmas. I decided to go spend the holiday with Heather in Seattle, her husband left her. I'll call you when I get there....I love you Dad.” Her father must have been shocked to hear the final words...she didn't speak affectionately to him lately. Once she disconnected she dropped her phone in the nearest garbage bin and headed for Domestic flights. She booked a flight in her own name to Seattle and then went to another airline and booked a flight to Houston using her own credit card and waited for that plane to board. While she waited she told herself she was doing the right thing. Michael was more then a convict, he was a man she felt an instant connection with and she needed to see if there was more to them then that.

Once she got to Houston she booked a flight to Panama City as Hillary Montgomery, feeling very nervous as she used the credit card. When she landed in Panama City she felt terrified, she had no luggage to declare and had bought a one way ticket, she was worried they would think she was a terrorist. But she passed through customs with out so much as a second glance and caught a cab to The Flamingo Resort. When she got there she discovered the hotel was booked for the holiday but after they checked her name they found she had a suite reserved for her. Pushing down the nausea she felt, she followed the bell boy to her room, explaining that the airport lost her luggage. For a woman who had never lied, she found herself slipping into it so easily. She justified it because she was protecting Michael. She slept the first day and night and the next day she went to the shops in the resort and bought some clothes with the Hillary credit cards and decided to look around the resort. Knowing she was searching for Michael...what did he look like now. Had he disguised himself? She kept to herself and stayed in her room, watching the people on the beach from her balcony, only going out for meals. When New Year's Eve rolled around she got dressed in a shimmery purple slip dress and a matching shawl and made her way to the party being held in the hotel's ball room.

Which is where she stood now, listening as the crowd counted down the seconds until New Years.

She felt someone take her elbow and she turned to find herself staring in Michael's brilliant green eyes. His hair was longer but still very clean cut compared to most of the men, he was wearing a black tuxedo and a nervous smile.
