DESTINY

Sara had dozed off in the break room while waiting for a fresh pot of coffee to brew. Something cold and wet drizzled down her arm. She brushed it away with her hand. It hit her arm again. This time, she came awake with a start.

She was looking straight into a pair of blue eyes. His smile was wide. He held a green plastic toy water gun in his hands.

“Not nice.” She murmured. “Where’d ya get the toy, Griss?”

“Greg,” Grissom stated nonchalantly. “I confiscated it a few months back.”

Sara stretched her arms way over her head. As she did this, her tank top rode up and Grissom caught a glint of something silver near her navel. She caught him looking and pulled her tank top down over her stomach.

“Is that a belly ring, Sara?” Grissom asked not taking his eyes off of hers.

“Yeah, I got it a few nights ago when Nick and I went out. He got a tattoo, and I got this.” She pulled her shirt up enough for him to see a blue moon and silver stars hanging from her navel. “And it didn’t hurt a bit.”

Nick picked that moment to walk into the break room. “Yeah, is that why we nearly ended up at the ER? You nearly broke my hand.”

Sara was standing now. She playfully punched Nick in the arm. “You squealed, Nicky. Just you wait. When you least expect it, I will get you back. Show Grissom your tattoo. Show him.”

Nick pulled his shirt sleeve up to reveal a large crouching white tiger.

“Not very manly is it, Grissom?” Sara was just poking fun at him. Nick just smirked at her.

“Hey, shift is over. Good night, Nick. Sara, could I see you in my office before you head home? Please?” Grissom said not taking his eyes off of Sara.

Nick gave Sara the “now you’ve done it” look. Sara grimaced. What have I done now?

Sara walked into Grissom’s office. The door closed behind her. Startled, she started to turn toward the sound.

“You did that on purpose, Sara.” Grissom’s chest was pressed into Sara’s back as he whispered into her ear.

“What?” Sara said breathlessly. Being this close to him always left her that way. She swallowed audibly.

When he put his hands on her waist, it was all she could do to stand. She nearly lost her balance. He caught her when her knees went weak.

“See what you do to me, Grissom. I can’t even stand when you’re this close to me.” Sara whispered.

Grissom turned her to face him. Cupping his hand under her chin, he pulled her face up until she looked him in the eyes. “I know what to do now, Sara.”

He waited while holding his breath to see if she understood his meaning.

“Not too late.” She whispered almost inaudibly.

That was all the encouragement he needed. He pulled her lips to his and kissed her softly. Gentle at first then with more fervor. She pulled away after nearly a minute. They both gasped for breath.

“Not at work, Grissom. If you want to pursue this, it can’t be at work. Our jobs are too valuable to us to mess it up. We could get caught by the wrong person. Let’s take this out of the lab. Okay?”

“You are right, Sara. Breakfast? I make a mean omelet. Go shower and change and be at my house in one hour. No earlier…promise. I have some arrangements to make. Plus, I have to clean up some too. One hour, okay?”

Sara nodded as she drew his lips to hers for one quick kiss. Then she was out the door. Smiling the whole way home, she showered. She threw on a pair of jeans and a purple t-shirt and put flip flops on her feet. She still had 40 minutes to kill before she could be at Grissom’s door. She wondered what he had in store for her. She hoped his offer had been for more than breakfast. She had waited so long for him to even notice her and make a move; she wasn’t going to let time get in the way. She wasn’t taking any chances for him to change his mind.

Same time at Grissom’s Townhouse

He started peeling his clothes off as soon as he walked through the door. He went straight to the shower. Then with only the towel around his waist, he started picking up discarded clothes and books until he got the townhouse in order. Time seemed to fly. He had just got the eggs out when the doorbell sounded.

Forgetting that he was only clothed in a towel, he opened the door to a very stunned Sara.

“Uh, Grissom, what ever happened to foreplay and in our case, you making up for the hell you put me through the past few years?” Sara asked pointing to his towel clad body.

He looked down in horror. He pulled her into the house.

“I’ll be right back, Sara. I am so sorry.” With that, he walked into his bedroom to grab his clothes. Sara followed. He had his back to her and hadn’t seen her follow him. He dropped the towel. She reached and pinched his naked bottom. He turned to face her in horror. She had her arms around his neck and her lips on his before he knew what hit him. She attacked him mouth like there was no tomorrow. She pushed him back until he fell backwards on to the bed. She pulled her shirt over her head and was reaching for her button on her jeans when his hands stopped hers and began to open them and slide them down.

He looked her in the eye and paused. “You sure this is what you want, Sara?”

“Yes, Gil. I want you to make love to me. Now.” He slid her jeans and panties to the floor and had her under him on the bed in a matter of seconds. He reached toward his night stand for a condom when Sara’s words stopped him. “No, Gil. I am on the pill. I want to feel you. All of you. I don’t want latex between us. I want you to feel me. To know that I am always going to be here. I am not going anywhere.”

The only time we ever touch other people is when we're wearing our latex gloves. Grissom’s mind went back to an interview room. To a night that brought his biggest fear full circle.

“You heard me?” Grissom stopped and pulled back to look her in the eye. He had to know.

“Yeah, Gil. I heard you. I was there for the whole thing. Catherine told me you were bringing him in and I had to know what was it about that case that made you avoid me. I saw her you know. Debbie. She looked like me. Catherine even said so. Tell me, Gil. Why did you let that case overcome you like that? She wasn’t me. He wasn’t you. Why did you tell a complete stranger, a monster, about your feelings for me?” She was almost in tears then.

“It was safer. You are the only one in my life that has been able to make me feel since he left us.” Grissom said and averted his face away so she couldn’t see the shame in his eyes.

Sara pulled his face so she could see his eyes. She saw pain in them. A deep pain. What caused him to hurt so?

“Tell me, Love. What happened? I won’t turn away from you. You are stuck with me till I die, Gil.” Sara told him as she stroked his cheek.

“I was five when he left us, Sara. We were never high on his priority list. My mother was almost completely deaf by then. He couldn’t stand having a wife that was damaged. So one day he just walked away. I never heard from him again. He sent Mom the divorce papers through a messenger. He was a cold hearted bastard of a man. I used to love him, but the longer he was gone the more I was glad. Growing up in a silent house made me a silent man. I didn’t have to talk to communicate with my mother. We used only our hands unless I just wouldn’t listen to her then she spoke to me. I became her ears, Sara. Do you know how hard that was for a five year old boy to have to put off playing because he was terrified that if he didn’t help his mother she would walk away too? I didn’t understand for a long time why he left us. I only got more distant from people. I tried to fit in at school, but having brains put a damper on that one too. You were either a jock in school or a brain. I was a brain. Which made me a ghost. You were the first thing in life that made me feel again in the part of my heart I closed off from everything. It scared me. I had always kept everyone from that part of myself even Catherine and she is one of my best friends.” Grissom was crying by the time that he finished telling Sara all of this.

She knew there was more to the story. More detail, but she would wait until he was ready to share with her. She wouldn’t push. She just held him to her while he cried.

After some time, she pulled his mouth up to hers and kissed him. He kissed her back softly. He held her hand as he kissed her lips.

“I want to make love to you, Sara. Will you let me?” He asked her.

“Yes.” That one word was all it took. He was kissing her mouth again and neck. Everywhere he could touch and reach. He wanted to show her just how much she meant to him. She touched and kissed him back. Exploring his body and he explored hers.

As he entered her, there hands were entwined together above their heads. He pushed himself deep inside her warm, wet center and they moved together slowly. They knew they had all the time the wanted and needed to make their first time special. Nothing needed to be hurried. Just the slow rhythmic motion of their bodies molding together. Sara’s body was the lock. Grissom’s the key. The fit together perfectly. They knew then that they would only touch each other for the rest of their lives. It was destiny.

Hours passed and they were laying together under his sheets with the mixture of sweat and musk. The limbs a tangled mass. Sound asleep. Breakfast a forgotten thing.

3 hours before shift

Sara had wondered into the bathroom to pee and spotted his Jacuzzi out a door off the bathroom. She went back to the bed and nuzzled his neck.

“Gil, wake up. I want to get in your Jacuzzi with you. I don’t know about you but I am sore. I have never made love to a man that I loved before, and you were brilliant. Now I wanna soak with you. Please.” Sara asked sucking on his earlobe.

“You know that I could never say no to you again.” He said standing and picking her up. He carried her to the Jacuzzi tub. Sat her on her feet and started the jets and water. After about five minutes of filling up, it was ready for them to get in. She sat on the side and he sat in front of her. She wrapped her legs around him and he leaned back into her. They stayed that way until and hour before shift. Hunger called them from the sanctity of the Jacuzzi. They toweled each other off. Grissom didn’t wanted to let her go.

“Let me go, Gil. We have to get dressed and eat before we are late for work.” Sara told him kissing his nose.

“If you love something let it go, when it comes back then you know.” Gil told her softly in her ear.

“I will always come back to you, Love. We are one. Always have been. Always will.” Sara told him and kissed him passionately before pulling away to dress.

9 months and 5 days later
Desert Palms Hospital

“It’s a girl.” The doctor told them. A beautiful blue-eyed brown haired girl with her mothers delicate mouth and her father’s nose.

“You did beautiful, Sara Elizabeth Si---I mean---Grissom. I love you both more than you will ever know. My life is truly complete now that I have my girls.” Grissom kissed her tenderly on the mouth.

“I love you too, hot pants.” Sara said a little out of breath.

“Excuse me. Hot Pants? You were the one saying ‘I’m on the pill’. Not me.” Grissom said brushing his fingers over their daughter’s cheek.

“It is only 99 percent effective. You know that.”

“It was destiny.” They looked into each others eyes then and smiled.

“Go tell them. I am sure they are about ready to take the door off the hinges.” Sara swatted his rear as he turned to go to the waiting room to tell their family.

Waiting Room

“Girl. She and her mother are doing fine. She is beautiful. Destiny Faith Grissom was born 20 minutes ago. You can all come in now.” Grissom told Warrick, Catherine, Nick, Brass, Doc Robbins, Greg, and his mother, Abigail Grissom. Well, he signed it to his mother. She hugged him close. It was all agreed that she would be allowed to go in first to see her grandchild.
