Nick shoved his feet into his shoes as he tried to tie his bow tie. What was he doing? A blind date: Warrick’s idea of a good time. He had given Nick Lola’s screen name about six months ago. She was a cop, formally from New York who had transferred a station in Reno. They had been having a good time talking online, but they had never talked on the phone or exchanged pictures. He had been happy keeping things platonic, but Warrick wanted to take things to the “next level”. He invited Lola and Nick to go with him and his new wife to dinner at the Bellagio. The catch was that he had asked Lola first; she had said yes, so Nick had no choice but to go.
Nick took one last glance at himself in the mirror before jogging out to his car. He though he looked pretty good, but wasn’t feeling very confidant. He hadn’t been out on a date in a long time, certainly not after the kidnapping. He wasn’t trustful of meeting new people, and even though he had been talking to Lola for some time now, he was very apprehensive. What if she was some freak who had only sounded nice online? What if she was a dog? Worse: what if she was amazing, but didn’t like him?
Nick was sent over to the table by the snobbish host, informing him that, “The rest of your party has already been seated”. Warrick rose to meet him halfway.
“Hey Nick, runnin late?”
“Yeah, sorry Warrick. I don’t know how anybody can tie these things in under an hour” Nick responded sheepishly, tugging at his tie.
Warrick reached out to straighten the tie for his fumbling friend. “Well, everything’s going ok so far, seeing as how we didn’t think you were gonna show. Your date? She’s a fox, man”
Nick raised his eyebrows. “Yeah?”
“Yeah” Warrick said, turning back toward the table, his hand on Nick’s arm leading him forward.
Nick said hi to Tina, sliding his glance over at the woman with her back to him. He took his seat next to her. “Hi, I’m Nick”
“So you are,” she said, turning slowly his way. Her brown hair hung loose, and she pushed it behind her ears as she raised an eyebrow at him. “I was hoping you wouldn’t chicken out.” The shock that registered on his face made her smile. He looked so out of place in the tux, his tie crooked. “Well you’re here now, lets eat!”
Nick felt himself flushing, but managed a smile. “Yeah, sure!”
Warrick and Tina contributed to conversation, but true to the form of newlyweds, they were more enraptured with each other. The brunt of conversation was then up to Nick and Lola, but that ended up being no problem at all. They talked about the weather, work, New York, Texas, old cases, college, anything and everything, even though the sickening flirting going on across the table…
Nick couldn’t believe it. He had forgotten how to “date” and here he was, completely enjoying himself with this attractive, intelligent woman whom he had never met before. She had big green eyes that squinted when she smiled, that for some reason what very appealing to him. Also appealing was the great expanse of leg she was showing, which more that made up for the high neckline of her dress.
“I don’t know how much more of this I can take” Lola said, shooting a glare at Warrick and Tina. She and Warrick had been friends since college and she had never seen him so happy, but frankly, it was beginning to make her aggravated. She hadn’t trusted Warrick to set her up with one of his friends, but this one was a winner. The Southern twang in his voice was unbelievably adorable, and his dimples- oh, the dimples… “Stokes, you ever had a Wild Night?” she asked. She wasn’t sure why she said it, but she knew that Nick was a good guy, and at that moment, she needed to go have fun with a good guy.
Nick frowned, confused at the abrupt change in conversation. “A Wild Night?”
“Yeah, a night where you just go out and have a hell of a good time, without thinking of any consequences” she grinned, looking mischievously at him. “Let’s ditch these two and go dancing! Do you have a change of clothes?”
“In the car?” Nick replied, cautiously
“We’ll say our goodbyes, you get your clothes, we’ll change up in my room, and then we’ll go hit the clubs! I need to get out of this dress…” she said, pulling miserably at the hem of her black cocktail dress.
“You have a room here?” Nick asked, surprised.
“Well I figured I could make a nice little vacation out of this ‘blind date’ thing, so I packed way too many clothes, jumped in the car and here I am!” she laughed. “You want to go out with me for a Wild Night?”
Nick though about it. If there was ever a time to move on and regain control of his life, this was it. This girl in the slightly conservative black dress was too interesting to let go of, especially at the proposition of a wild night out. It was now or never. “Ok, let’s go”.
Nick and Lola said good-bye to Warrick and Tina, apologizing for leaving before dessert. Lola waited in the lobby while Nick went out to his car and retrieved the small duffel he always kept in the trunk. He came back in, and they headed up in the elevator in silence. They got off on her floor and headed down the hall to her room, Nick walking a respectable distance behind her. She opened the door and they went into the suite.
“I’ll change in the bedroom, you can use the bathroom,” she said then headed immediately off down the small hallway, shutting the door behind her with a snap.
Nick changed quickly, shedding the tux and stuffing it into the duffel. He put on jeans and a black t-shirt, and swapped his nice shows for boots. Nick went back out into the ‘living room’ of the suite tossed the duffel into a corner and waited for Lola.
She came out of the bedroom a couple minutes later. Her hair was in a ponytail. She had changed her black dress for tight jeans and a long red top, belted at the waist with a black scarf. The heels of her shoes had to be three inches high. She grinned at him wickedly. “You ready to go Stokes11-87?” she asked, calling him by his online handle. He looked so handsome, she thought. The tight t-shirt did things for his muscles that the tux had only hidden. She snuck a look down at his jeans when he turned away to flick the light switch off: nice and snug where it mattered.
He stood from the couch, slightly glad that he was still taller than her. “Sure thing Lala76” he grinned. No bare leg in this outfit, he noticed, but there was some cleavage peeking out this time, and that was just as nice. “Let’s go”
