Serenity’s Flight
Characters: Mal Reynolds, Jayne Cobb, Inara Serra, Shepard Book, River Tam, Simon Tam, Kaylee Frye, Zoe Warren, and Warren Washburn
Summary: Set three weeks after the last episode of “ Firefly.” Malcolm and the others are fleeing from the alliance and the assassin after River and Simon. Taking odd jobs here and there to survive. What would the captain do if River was actually kidnaped by the assassin?

Chapter One
Malcolm was in his room, lying on his bed. It had been such a close call with that Jubal Early character. He’d nearly gotten off with a member of his crew, and left the rest of them indisposed. He didn’t know what he would do if River was snatched. He didn’t much care for the girl, but she shouldn’t be left to the alliance. He not only had to deal with the fact they were being chased, but Inara had decided to leave the ship. He knew she loved Serenity as much as anyone, and he didn’t understand why she insisted on leaving. Just as he was about to slip into sleep, someone knocked on his door. He got up, and went over to the intercom.
“ What is it?” He got a hesitant Kaylee on the other side.
“ Um...Captain, I think you need to come up to the engine room.” Mal groaned and started to climb the ladder that led to the upper deck. He opened the door, and saw Kaylee standing there biting her lip.
“ Well, what’s the matter, Kaylee? Did the ship stop working again? It doesn’t feel like we’ve stopped or anything.” Kaylee sighed before answering him.
“ It’s kinda bad captain, and I think you just need to see it for yourself.” Mal ran his hands through his hair, and followed Kaylee. They had to go through the Kitchen area to get to the engine room. When they got there, though the lights were completely out. Mal had a really bad feeling, and was about to say so to Kaylee, when the lights came out, and everyone jumped out in front of him.
“ Surprise!” Mal was completely taken aback. They didn’t know when his birthday was, so why were they throwing him a party? He walked further into the room, and looked around at the balloons and the huge cake that was on the table. He looked around and found Zoe`, who had a huge grin on her face. He walked over to her, and stopped inches from her face.
“ I take it this is your doing, huh?” Zoe nodded and grinned wider at him.
“ Guilty as charged, Captain. I just figured you deserved it, is all.” He looked over at Kaylee who was looking at him sheepishly.
“ I’m sorry, Captain, we just figured an engine problem would get you out of your cabin.” Malcolm just shook his head.
“ Well, I don’t know what to say. Except that, Zoe` I’ll talk to you later.” She didn’t seemed threatened at all. Her grin just widened if that was possible.
When the celebration was over, Mal just sat at the table reflecting his crew. He’d had his problems with, that was for sure. Simon and River being his biggest problem. He would never let the alliance take them, but sometimes it just seemed like the easiest thing to do. He started to get up, when he was face to face with River.
“ If you think that, then why don’t you just turn us over? Believe me, Captain, my brother and I can take care of ourselves.” Mal shook his head at the strange girl.
“ You know at times, it doesn’t seem like you have any problems at all?” She just shrugged and walked away from him. He was about to go after her, but he thought better of it. He walked back to down the corridor towards his chamber. It was then that the alarm sounded from the bridge. Mal took off running to see what the trouble was.
When he got there, Wash wasn’t there. Mal was about to be very angry, but he ran in shortly after he did. He quickly got into the pilot seat, and started pressing buttons. Malcolm would never admit it, but he had no idea what those particular buttons did. Wash continued to press buttons, and didn’t say anything to him. He started to get impatient, and yelled at Wash.
“ What the hell is going on, Wash?!” Wash turned around with a grimace.
“ Sorry Captain, but it appears that we’re being chased.” Mal groaned, and got on the intercom.
“ Zoe`, report to the bridge immediately.” After turning off the intercom, he turned his attention back to his pilot.
“ Do you have any idea who it is?” Wash looked at him with a scared expression on his face.
“ Yes, I do. It appears that the assassin, Jubal Early is chasing us.” Mal was about to say something, when Zoe walked in.
“ What’s going on, Captain?” Mal threw his arms up, and turned back to Wash.
“ How can you be sure, that it’s him?” Wash visibly swallowed.
“ Because he’s been hailing us, sir.” Malcolm’s mouth dropped open.
“ Wash, that doesn’t make any sense, because we left him drifting out in outer space! Does someone want to explain to me, how in the hell he got back to his ship? Not only that, but he’s managed to locate us, and start chasing us!!!” Wash just shrugged and expertly maneuvered Serenity out of harm’s way. When they were safely out of his distance, they got one more message from Mr. Early. Mal really didn’t want to see what it said, but it seemed like the smart thing to do. He motioned for Wash to show him what it said. When he opened it, Early’s face appeared on the screen.
“ Good evening, Captain Reynolds. I know you think you’ve escaped me, but trust me, this isn’t over. That girl is very clever indeed, but I will get her from you. It would be simpler if you’d just hand her over, but I know you’re not going to. Besides, it’s more fun if I get to chase you. I look forward to seeing you all again. Until our next meeting, I’ll say goodbye for now.” When the message was over, Mal flopped down into a near by chair.
“ That’s just creepy. DOES ANYONE WANNA TELL ME HOW IN THE HELL HE FOUND US?!” Zoe` was the first one to speak.
“ I believe that he’s working for the alliance, sir, so it’s possible they found him floating. I’m sure they provided him with a ride back to his ship. Perhaps we should have blown the thing up.”
