Disclaimer: Follow the evidence. If I owned the team this would be on CBS instead of the Internet. The characters aren't mine and I dont make any money from this. This story picks up a few days after “Just To Hear You” ends. You’ll need to at least understand the highlights of that one first for this one to make sense.
Sara drove along the highway heading for the latest crime scene. They were shorthanded since Grissom resigned, and tonight it seemed as if the criminal element of Las Vegas was taking full advantage of it. She had pulled into the lab with her evidence from the break in she processed earlier in the evening when Catherine paged her to work a 419 just outside of town. She told Catherine she would log her evidence into the vault and would be on her way. Catherine was on her way to the lab to drop evidence off herself, so she told Sara to go ahead and start out as soon as she was ready and that she would meet her there. She arrived at the scene to find Ecklie already there dealing with the media coverage. A dead body found staked upright beneath the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign attracted a frenzy of media coverage already, and not all of it local. He excused himself from the gaggle of reporters when we saw her arrive alone.
“Sidle. Do not tell me you’re running this case solo.” He caught the glare in her eyes and immediately explained. “Hey don’t get me wrong. I know you’re good. Frankly on paper you’re the best CSI we have. But this is becoming a high profile case and I need someone, let’s just say I need someone a little more diplomatic.”
Sara relaxed a bit at his explanation. “Relax. Catherine is on her way. We’ve all been running solo all night with the caseload we’ve had. I was dropping evidence to the vault when she paged me. I started out here while she was headed to the lab to do the same. She’ll be here.” She started looking at the dirt between the road and the body and then looked back at Ecklie. “You know Ecklie, I don’t know about you anymore. No offense but for the longest time, you had to be the second biggest ass in the lab. Now the last two case scenes I’ve been to and run into you, you’re different. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I had gotten so used to you being an ass that it’s taking a while to get used to.” She looked down and sighed. “I’m sorry. It’s none of my business and it’s certainly not my place to comment on you.”
“You’re right. It’s not your place and I don’t have to explain myself to anyone. But you’re right. I was an ass and I’m sure my recent behavior is making a lot of people uneasy. It just dawned on me one day that I have the best lab in the country. All of the people who work in the lab know their jobs and do them well. I decided then to back off and let you guys do what you do best. None of you need me hounding you to get the job done.” He stepped closer to Sara and lowered his voice. “Nothing like a wake up call to give a guy a new perspective on things. But I don’t think I have to tell you that. Give it up Sidle. Everyone in the lab and LVPD knows you’ve been in love with Grissom for years. And everyone, at least in the lab, knows he’s been in love with you too. Even I knew that from the first time I saw you two work a case together. If I’m wrong, then it’s one hell of a coincidence that he resigned after he was shot and you were practically catatonic.”
“Hey Ecklie. Quit harassing Sara and get back to work.” Catherine saw Ecklie talking to Sara and knew that couldn’t be good considering Sara’s dislike for the guy. Ecklie looked over his shoulder at her. “Hey Catherine. What took you so long?” “Well I had to drop another case at the lab and I was making calls the whole time I was driving making sure other new cases got coverage. By the way if we’re going to be running shorthanded for any length of time, I hope the department is buying us all hands free units for our cells. Working this way just isn’t safe for anyone.” “So put in the request and I’ll approve it. That’s a valid point.”
“Ok Sara. What have we got?” “No footprints in the dirt, no clear tire marks, nothing between the road and the body but dirt, rocks and sand. I haven’t started processing the body yet.”
“Good. Then I wont have to worry about you killing evidence.” Sara turned to see Grissom just walking around the front of his Mercedes and she looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “They called you in on this?” “Hey Cath said they had a body with bugs, so here I am.”
They processed the scene quickly, the body was taken away, and Ecklie dragged Grissom in front of the throng of reporters. Grissom hated talking to the press, but he could understand Ecklie’s reasoning. This was a high profile case and having one of the top ranked entomologists in the country consulting on it made them both look good. Grissom had never cared about appearances, but since he was looking to get back into the lecture circuit, he had to play the game. There hadn’t been much to find at the scene, so most of the work had to be done back at the lab. Grissom followed Catherine and Sara back to the lab so he could start analyzing the bugs found on the body.
Judy looked up as Catherine, Sara, Brass and Grissom walked into the unit. “Dr. Grissom? I thought you left.” “So did I, but it seems these guys can’t handle bugs without me.” Sara rolled her eyes. “Griss we can handle bugs fine. We just can’t make them talk to us like you can.” Judy darted around the desk to intercept them. “Dr. Grissom, a woman came by and asked for you. I tried to find out what she wanted to give you a message, but she wouldn’t say much.” Grissom looked puzzled. “Really? How long ago was she here?” Judy glanced down the hall behind him. “Actually she was just in the ladies room. She’s right there.”
Grissom turned around and saw something he thought he would never see. The lights played off the curls in her salt and pepper hair as she walked. She finally took her eyes off the floor and met his eyes. A look of relief swept across her face when she saw him. Grissom smiled as she stopped in front of the bulletin board and crooked her finger in a come hither motion. He went to her, wrapped her in a hug, and then jumped as she hit her hand on the bulletin board drawing attention to the article that hung there. It was the article detailing the shooting that almost killed him.
Sara, Catherine, and Brass watched the scene in the hall and were puzzled. They had no idea who this person was, let alone why Grissom was hugging her. Brass looked pointedly at Catherine. “I thought Griss liked his women a bit younger.” Sara took the box and headed to the evidence vault. “Nice going Brass. Why don’t you give the girl a complex just when her and the mad scientist are making progress.”
Grissom saw the woman in his arms hit the article again and he pulled back to look at her. “Later. Right now there are some people I want you to meet.” She looked into his blue eyes and knew he was avoiding it. “No. Now. Tell me what happened.” Grissom stood his ground. “Later.” He turned away and took her hand to walk her into the lab. She pulled her hand away and stopped walking. “Gilbert Aaron Grissom! You get back here and tell me what happened!”
Grissom winced at the sound of his full name being used. He ran his hand through is hair and glanced over at Brass and Catherine, who were looking quite amused. Grissom turned to her and both said and signed “Mom, you’re shouting.” His mother was not amused. “Of course I’m shouting! I come here to see my son, find out he quit the job he loves, and oh by the way there is this lovely article about how he got shot and apparently almost died! Did he think to call me? No. Of course not. I’m just his mother. Why would I care?”
“You didn’t call your mother? Gil what were you thinking?” Catherine was furious. She walked over to Mrs. Grissom and touched her shoulder. “I’m Catherine Willows. Why don’t I take you to the break room for some coffee? That should give Gil a few minutes to come up with an explanation for being a complete idiot.” “That would be lovely. Wait a minute, how did you know to touch me so I looked at you before you spoke?” Catherine grinned, “Well when the big idiot over there was quitting he mentioned his mother was deaf. You called him your son, so it didn’t take a scientist to figure it out.” His mom laughed. “Well even if it did, I have no doubt you’d have put it together. Gil has mentioned you quite often, Catherine.” The two women walked toward the break room glaring at Grissom as they passed.
Brass watched them walk away and then looked at Grissom. “You never told your mother about the shooting? Or that you resigned? I’ll have Doc Robbins pick out a nice drawer for you, because she’s going to kill you.”
