“You started it.”
“I did not”, Nick whined.
“Oh you soooo did”, Sara teased.
“No I didn’t. But I’ll finish it” Nick launched his water balloons at Sara. Unfortunately it was at that moment that Grissom walked into the break room and caught both of the balloons squarely in the chest. Grissom looked shocked for a moment, then anger clouded his eyes and he glared at Nick. “Nick what is going on here?” Nick looked like a little boy who had been sent to the principal’s office as he explained.
“Well Griss you know that case Sara and I are working on over at UNLV? Well the suspect swears he wasn’t on the roof so he couldn’t have pushed the vic off. He says he was tossing water balloons out of the 4th story window. Sara and I were checking his story, so we made up a bunch of these water balloons and dropped them from different windows to match the splatter pattern.”
Grissom looked down at his clothes, which were now soaked and covered in red and could feel his pulse racing. “And just why would water balloons be filled with red liquid?”
“Oh that was Sara’s idea so we could view the splatter better. We lined the walk with paper and filled the balloons with water and food coloring.”
If he hadn’t been a scientist, Grissom would have thought that smoke was pouring out of his ears. “FOOD COLORING! Do you have any idea how that stuff stains?”
Sara defended “Hey it wasn’t like I intended on throwing them at people. That was all Nick’s doing. But if it makes you feel any better, shift is almost over. Go change into your spare clothes and I’ll see what I can do about getting those taken care of so the color doesn’t set until you get home.”
Grissom didn’t say a word, but Catherine coming up the hall behind him heard everything. “Sara, these ARE his spare clothes. We got caught in a sinkhole out at our scene earlier. But Griss I know you have another change of clothes in your office.” Grissom just glared at her. “Catherine that is out of the question. That’s the outfit I picked up to go to that ridiculous county dinner tomorrow night. Definitely not appropriate for work.” “Well Gil, either you change into it, or your white shirt here is going to be pink forever. Come on, I’ve gotten food coloring out of clothes before. You should have seen the mess Lindsay made doing Easter eggs one year.”
“Ok, ok. Nick I want you to clean up this mess, and don’t let me catch you doing anything like this again. I don’t think I need to tell you what will happen if I do.” “No you don’t Griss. It’s a safe bet your pulse is already over 95. I’ll take care of it.”
Grissom stormed back to his office with Catherine trailing after him. He quickly changed into the white linen shirt and charcoal grey slacks, leaving the jacket and tie in the garment bag. Catherine took his stained clothes with her to soak them in the janitor’s sink until the end of shirt. He felt a headache coming on, but knew he had to make some sort of a dent in the pile of paperwork on his desk.
A few hours later shift was over. Catherine and Sara were the last to leave the lab, other than Grissom. Cath told Sara she’d take Grissom’s clothes with her and give him the message to stop by later and pick them up. Sara headed for the office and what she saw stopped her in her tracks in the doorway. Grissom was sitting behind his desk leaning back in his chair, eyes closed, hands laced behind his head. He wore a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the top 3 buttons open just giving a glimpse of his solid chest. The morning sunrise was shining on the grey streaks in his curls and made the whole scene look like something out of a romance novel.
Sara tried to speak, but found her mouth was dry. Instead she stepped into his office and closed the door behind her. Grissom opened his eyes at the sound of the door closing and sat up. “Is there something you need, Sara?” “Yeah. You.” Grissom looked at her and sighed. “Sara..” “Look Griss. I’m tired of dancing around this. I know you turned me down for dinner, and I heard you talking with Dr. Laurie in interrogation. What are you afraid of, Griss? It’s not your career because we both know you could have better hours and money working private consults. So what is it?”
Grissom stood up and walked around the desk to lean against it. “Sara it’s complicated.” “No Griss it’s only complicated if you make it that way. Damn it Grissom. When I heard you talk to Dr. Laurie, do you know what hurt the most? It was the fact that I wasn’t worth the risk. Your career isn’t a risk, so that would leave being with me in general. And I wasn’t’ worth it. But no matter how much it hurt, I still had one small comfort. You never said you didn’t care about me. The things you said more than implied you did care, and not in a friend/college way.”
He took off his glasses and set them behind him on his desk. “No Sara I didn’t say I didn’t care about you. I couldn’t do that. Do you really want to know what the risk is? The risk is I’m afraid that if pursue my feelings for you that I’ll lose myself. I’m 15 years older than you are Sara. How long before you got tired of me and moved on? I couldn’t handle that. Losing you like that would destroy me. The risk as nothing to do with my career. My reputation stands on it’s own, and there are places across the country that would love to have me come work for them. For the first time in my life, I’m not worried about my career at all. Just about my heart.”
Sara was stunned. “I never expected you to be so open about this. Not now after all this time.” Grissom chuckled, “Well I’ve gotten a lot of advice lately, and it’s been pointed out more than once that the odds were against me as far as you were concerned.” Sara laughed, “So that’s what’s up with the changes. Just that outfit was a big enough shock when I came in here. I never pictured you in something like that.” Grissom smiled, “yeah I was told by someone that I wear too much black and dark grey. So I went with something a little lighter.” “Oh taking fashion advice from Lady Heather now?”, Sara spat. The whole Lady Heather incident was just too much for her to handle. “Actually Sara, it was Terri Miller who mentioned I needed more color. And just for the record she’s also the one who told me I really need to stop fighting with myself and just admit how I feel about you, and act on it.
Grissom stepped forward and took Sara’s face in his hands. “Sara I’ve been a complete jerk. I love you and all I’ve done is hurt you. You deserve better than that. You certainly deserve better than an old man who can’t express his feeling very well. Maybe there is a reason for that. Maybe I’m not supposed to be loved.”
Sara looked into his deep blue eyes and took his hand. “You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” Grissom looked puzzled. “I’m not familiar with who said that one.” Sara giggled, “It was Buddah. It just seemed fitting.” “In all this time I just never thought you would be one to be quoting Buddah.” “And who did you think I would be quoting?” “No one really. I always figured you to be a very methodical, just the facts, cite your source kind of person.”
Sara laughed. “Well that shows how much you don’t really know about me. Do you remember when we met? I thought I would go to that boring seminar and rack up a few extra credit points. No muss, no fuss, and not much thought required. Then you walked in with those blue eyes. After we talked afterwards, I had quotes going through my head the rest of the afternoon.”
“Like what?”
“Like One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: that word is love. Sophocles”
“You loved me then?” “Griss I’ve been attracted to you for years. Back then I loved your passion for your work, your dedication, your eyes, and your sense of humor. Over the years that changed and I feel in love with you. Just you, bugman. Not what you do, your reputation, or anything. I love Gil Grissom. Period.”
“That’s good to know, because I love you too Sara. No matter how I try and fight it, I can’t. I know I’ve been a complete ass to you, but if you could give me a chance to make it up to you, it would mean the world to me.”
Sara thought a moment and slowly stepped forward wrapping her arms around his neck. “Oh I think we can make some type of arrangements. But you know you were a pretty big ass. You have some serious sucking up to do.” Grissom smiled. “Well then my all means, let’s not waste any more time.” And he kissed her. When they had to stop to breathe Sara could feel his heart racing. “Griss, I think you’re pulse is over 95 again.” “Yeah it is. But this time that’s a good thing.”
End.
“You started it.”
