Fight or flight
Chapter 1-Death is the acquisition
Breathless,
Almost dying inside he seemed to float down the corridor the bland walls suffocated him the air filled his lungs with the putrid clinical uninviting sights and sounds that came with every hospital, Every step seemed to be another stab the butterflies in his stomach turned to daggers in recent years, what sight would greet him today?
Would he have to take over his family at just sixteen?
His speed decreased as the realisation he was on the right ward dragged him out of thought and worry, He stopped for a moment and put on his false smile he looked at his reflection…it looked painful, Why did he even bother?
“Hello Mum” He said as he handed her flowers and kissed her forehead.
“Simon so nice to see you” she said in a wheeze
Her appearance had shocked him only a few weeks ago she was healthy-lively.
Now it seemed time had caught up with her and hallmarked with a vengeance,
All the marks of time only an 80 year old should have. They were all apparent the epidemic had got out of hand the virus was sweeping the land, But this wasn’t another statistic this was his Mother his only living parent.
He realised he had been silent then he turned his mind onto autopilot and made all the polite conversation that he thought she wanted to hear to take her mind off this mess,
TAKE HER MIND OFF THIS MESS-It was futile why did he even bother?
He was pondering this as he glanced over to the staff-The “silverness” had touched them that’s what Emmy called it, she had only seen these pictures of people who woke up with grey hair in the paper Simon tried to protect her from reality as much as he could.
“Brotherly love conquers all” which reminded him-
“Mum Emmy sends her love she did want to come and see you,”
Their Mother smiled weakly but couldn’t hide the pain in her eyes-Its hard to think about death when you have children of sixteen and eight what future can they have without her?
In Simons eyes she had always been a hero and now more than ever she was still more concerned about her family than her own health,
It was another story through her eyes-she secretly felt like a failure as a mother she had such high aspirations to see her grandchildren and see her children grown up and holding dear everything she had taught them but now she was broken inside and out her heart broke without a sound as she looked into her sons eyes and knowing at a glance he was fighting back tears all she could hear was the melody of her heartbeat fading and being consumed by the silence and the sobbing of her young boy.
