GRISSOM'S GRIDLOCK
by Barba
I can feel when you look at me, sometimes.
The scientist in me would immediately come up with all the rational reasons that this wouldn’t be true. I only feel it because I think it. Because you have feelings for me.
Sara, you have no idea. It would be so easy to turn to you and fall. I’ve already fallen, actually.
I just can’t let you know that. I can’t.
You’re so young. So smart. Beautiful. You have a life ahead of you. How could I possibly keep up? Keep your interest? I’m an old man in comparison to men you’ve dated before.
I can tell you have a physical interest in me, and that makes me feel good. It really does. But that weakens my resolve to keep you at arms length.
Everything about you is enticing. Your scent. Your natural look. Your voice. Your trust in me. When you told me about your parents, I wanted nothing more than to take you in my arms. But I didn’t, because I knew it wouldn’t stop there. I couldn’t take advantage of you, much as my body may have betrayed me at the time.
If circumstances were different…if I could have said yes that day you asked me to dinner…I’d know the feel of your skin by now. How you’d smell when you’re excited. What you’d say or scream when you came. How you’d look, flushed in the afterglow.
You’ll find someone to know those things. Someone worthier than Hank. Worthier than me.
I know that if you asserted yourself again, you would have me. And when you left me, it would hurt more than I could bear. That’s why I need distance. That’s why I need my work.
I can feel when you look at me, sometimes. And it scares me.
