A Moment of Madness

“Damn it, Fawkes, this is way beyond pissing me off. I didn’t do anything wrong, and I’m sick of you treating me like garbage. I tried to be understanding, but I’m tired and hungry and really sick of your company about now.” Hobbes reached for his jacket.

Darien grabbed his arm. “Bobby, you were flirting!”

“It’s what I have to do sometimes. She started batting her eyes and you know as well as I do that she was our best chance of getting to her boss fast. God gave me the gift of turning women on, and I use every talent I’ve got in the line of duty.”

“Oh, do you?” Darien’s eyes were flashing dangerously, but Bobby was just enough pissed not to catch the warning.

“Damn right I do. It’s called service to your country, pretty boy!”

“Every talent is for use on the job?” Darien moved closer, his face dark with anger.

“Didn’t I just say that?”

“So the reason you use your hands and mouth and cock to drive me crazy with lust is because its part of your job?” Darien was practically growling, but he didn’t try to strike his partner.

He might just as well have. Bobby went white and looked like he’d been pole axed.

“Is that what you think?” he finally whispered.

“Hell, isn’t that what you were just saying?” Darien was furious and determined to take it out on the person who had angered him. “You only care about your job! You always say I’m your job, right? No wonder you spend so much time in bed being sure you give me whatever I want. You’re on duty all night keeping the lab rat happy!” He ignored the pain and shock on Bobby’s face; now that he’d gotten on a roll, he didn’t want to control himself. “Does the ‘Fish give you a bonus for every night you spend with me, or is it sort of a commission arrangement, so much per orgasm?”

Bobby’s pallor was quickly being overtaken by a flush of anger. Pain gave way to rage.

“You think that’s it? You think Bobby Hobbes is some whore for the Agency? You think I’m some kinda lying, scheming con man making love to you for money? Seems to me I’m not the one with a criminal record here, my friend.” He grabbed Darien’s arm and in a flash had it pinned up behind his back, painfully close to the breaking point.

Darien wasn’t quite sure what it was he felt a rush of at that moment, but he let the words that came tumble out of his mouth unchecked.

“Yeah, that’s right. I’m a thief. But any good thief has to be a con man, and a con knows a con. You wouldn’t lay a finger on me if it weren’t your assignment and part of keeping me satisfied! I bet this is the first honest touch I’ve ever gotten from you.”

“Honesty? You little sleezeball, are you questioning my honesty?” Bobby whirled him back around and grabbed his jaw with one hand. He dragged him forcibly down to his own level and gave him an angry, crushing, invasive kiss.

Darien yanked away and laughed harshly.

“Quit it Hobbes, I’m not in the mood. I’ll call you when I feel like having another cheap fuck.”

“Oh, you’re not in the mood? Well maybe I am!” Bobby grabbed his arm again and before Darien knew what was happening, he was on his back on the floor with the wind knocked out of him.

Bobby dropped down straddling him, and for a moment Darien thought he was going to choke him. This was a side of Bobby Hobbes he'd almost never seen, at least not directed at him. He tended to forget just how helpless he really was at the hands of his smaller but more powerful and better-trained partner.

“You think I only have sex with you to make you happy? Everything has to be just the way little Darien Fawkes wants it? I suppose what Bobby Hobbes wants just doesn’t matter around here at all?”

“Why the fuck should it?” Darien had dragged just enough air back into his lungs to start in again. “I’m the freakin’ invisible man! I’m the Agency’s 17 million dollar toy! We fuck when I say, little man, so get off of me!”

Now Bobby was laughing - and it was a chilling sound. For just a moment Darien noticed the wildness of the other man’s expression, and thought that he might have pushed him too far, driven him over that precarious precipice where he knew Bobby lived his life. Then Bobby spoke again.

“Well, guess what, punk? It’s time for Bobby Hobbes to get what he wants. This time it’s all for me!”

That might have been exactly the sort of opinion Darien had been expressing for himself, but Bobby’s threatening attitude and menacing tone just fired his anger more.

“Screw you, man! I said no. That means you tuck your little cock away like a good boy and go home until I or your fat master whistle for you!”

“Shut up, you little asshole!” Bobby was practically screaming at him now. He ripped Darien’s shirt open and tore it completely off of him. “I don’t want to hear another word out of you. You just lay there and take what you’ve got coming.”

“I will not!”

Bobby slapped a hand over his mouth before he could go on. He kept it there while he reached behind him to unfasten Darien’s belt and slacks. Then in a terrifying whirl he was off Darien and had him stripped, and forced him over onto his belly. Then Darien was being pulled up onto his knees, and Bobby wrapped himself around him from behind.

“Feel that?” Bobby pressed his groin against Darien’s ass. “Does that feel so little to you? Want me to prove to you how big you make it?”

“Damn it, I said no and I…”

Bobby muffled him with his hand again.

“Yeah, you do. I don’t do anything to you don’t want, right? Well, I’m doing this, so you must want it.” He removed his hand. “Tell me you want it pretty boy,” he ordered.

“Fuck you.”

“No, fuck you.” Darien could feel Bobby struggling to free himself of his own pants while still holding on to him. Then his fingers were probing at Darien’s backside.

“Stupid asshole, I try to fuck you like this it’ll strip the skin right off my cock.” Bobby shoved him to the floor and stepped away.

Darien rolled over and scrambled to his feet. Bobby turned around with a small tube in his hand and their eyes met.

Darien saw his partner’s face go blank, then pale with horror at the same moment he felt an icy sanity return to his own thoughts.

They stood staring at one another.

Bobby began to back away slowly, and the tube fell unnoticed from his fingers.

“Oh, God, I’m sorry!” They spoke in unison.

“Please, Bobby, I didn’t mean any of that. I don’t know what came over me.”

“Fawkes, no.” The shock was still in control of Bobby’s face. “How could I? I was going to hurt you. I did hurt you. I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.” He kept backing away and shaking his head as he repeated the apology.

“It’s not your fault! Oh, Bobby, that was so wrong, I can’t believe I let jealousy make me attack you like that.”

He saw it in his partner’s face - self-loathing and despair. He knew Bobby was going to bolt.

“Please don’t leave me, Bobby,” he pleaded. “Please, I’m sorry, don’t abandon me. Let me make it up to you. Oh God, I can never make that up to you. How could I be so awful?” Tears were burning his eyes. “Please don’t leave me!” he wailed.

Bobby was suddenly there, holding him like he was made of spun sugar, stroking his hair, soothing him.

“Don’t, Darien, don’t. It’ll be all right. Something just came over both of us. We kinda snapped there for a minute, but it’s ok now. Everything’s ok now. I love you, Darien. I would never abandon you. I love you more than life, more than duty, more than my own soul.”

Darien threw his arms around Bobby, grabbed him like a he might still vanish if he gave him the chance. “Bobby, I know you love me. I know you love me and I don’t know how I could have said those awful things to you.” Suddenly Bobby’s grip tightened, almost enough to smother Darien.

It was a wonderful feeling.

Darien’s knees gave way and Bobby sank to the floor with him. They held each other for a long time and shook. Darien felt the burning tears he couldn’t fight off, and didn’t really care to, streak down his face.

Every time he started to think again, realize what had just happened between them, he choked up again. From the way Bobby’s breath caught from time to time, and the way his shaking would ease off and then suddenly start again with renewed vigor, he knew the same must have been happening to his beloved friend, partner and lover.

Finally exhaustion calmed them down. They sat back and looked at each other with haggard faces.

“I love you.” Again they spoke in unison.

“I know.” Each one made the reply at the same time.

They stared at one another.

They suddenly were in each other’s arms again, and they were laughing hysterically.

“God, I’m tired,” Bobby said when they finally calmed back down. “Darien, lover, can we go to bed now?”

Darien nodded silently.

“But tomorrow we talk everything out. We’re not going to let whatever made this happen split us up, right?”

“Never, Bobby. To lose you would kill me.”

“I’ll never leave you. I’d go mad without your love. I think I nearly did.”

“I think the same thing happened to me. I swear I’ll never let that happen again.”

“Never happen again. We can survive anything, because we belong together.” Bobby staggered to his feet and offered Darien his hand. Darien took it and leaned into him once he was on his feet.

“Bobby?” he whispered gently.

“Yeah, babe?”

“You look really silly wearing nothing but that red polo shirt.”

Bobby laughed weakly and pulled him into a bear hug.

“You should see your hair,” he replied before guiding his worn-out lover to the bed.
