James stared hard at the glowing green screen on his cell phone and frowned. He’d recognised the number instantly. He ought to, he’d made the mistake of answering once, before he knew who it was, and ever since it had been ringing almost constantly. There had been breaks of course, short ones, just long enough for the caller to eat and pee and other necessary everyday things. He got a break at night too, though not until very late, and the ringing would start bright and early the next morning, often waking James from a not altogether satisfying sleep. If it weren’t for the fact that he needed his phone for work, he’d have turned the damn thing off.

“Maybe you should just let him talk.” Andra had said when he told her what was happening. “Hear him out, then tell him to get lost.”

She was probably right. His caller was certainly persistent. If he let the guy speak, then at least this, this assault or whatever it was, would stop. If he let him speak, he’d have no reason to keep calling would he, he’d have to get lost. Trouble was, James really wasn’t sure he wanted the other man to get lost.

He squeezed his eyes shut and screwed up his face, half hoping it would block out the incessant ringing sound but it didn’t. He sighed heavily, opened his eyes and stared once more at the phone.

The pain he felt was still so intense. He still felt so raw and exposed, betrayed, humiliated and he was sure if he answered that phone now, it was only going to get worse, but at this point, he didn’t see that he much of a choice.

With a deep breath that did little to calm his nerves, he pressed answer and lifted the phone to his ear.

“James.” A voice said. “James, Oh God it’s so good to hear your voice. Please don’t hang up on me this time I…” James interrupted.

“I didn’t answer just so I could hang up. I could’ve just ignored you till you gave up.”

“No you couldn’t.” James wasn’t sure if the other man meant he wouldn’t have given up, or if he was saying he didn’t think James could ignore him for that long and decided not to try and analyse the comment.

“What do you want?”

“Just to talk, to explain. I know you probably hate me and you have every right but I’m going nuts here thinking about it. It wasn’t right, how things ended between us. Please James, just give me a chance.”

For a moment, James was silent. The other man certainly sounded sincere, but then he’d already proved he was a expert liar, an actor, a fake. And James had proved that he was gullible enough to believe it. He wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

“You had your chance to explain before you left.”

“I barely even knew what I was saying that day. I was so scared and so confused I’m surprised I could even remember my own name. I have so much more I want to say to you James. Please.

“Okay. I’m listening. Talk.“ He said, wanting to get this over with as quickly as possible before he made a complete fool of himself again.

“Not on the phone. Face to face. I want you to be able to look in my eyes and see the truth this time.” James’s cheeks flushed red at remembered intimacies. How many times that week had he looked into those eyes and though he’d seen the truth when what he’d really seen was nothing more than an act? He wasn’t strong enough yet to face the other man after everything that had happened, wasn’t sure he’d ever be if he was really truthful with himself.

“I don’t think that’s even possible.” He said cooly. “I’m sorry. No. I can’t see you.”

“Then I’ll just keep ringing until you have no choice but to change your mind.”

“I’ll change my number.”

“No you won’t. You need this number for your work, changing it would be too much of a hassle.” He was right. “Besides.” He added. “If I found this number I can find a new one just as easily.”

There was no arguing with that logic. James didn’t doubt the other man’s persistence in the slightest. It had gotten him this far after all. Not really knowing what else to do, and knowing that he couldn’t face another week of his phone ringing off the hook, James found himself agreeing.

“Okay.” He said softly. “I’ll meet you.” In his mind he was already planning not to go through with the meeting. He didn’t want to see him, and he wouldn’t be bullied into it. He just wanted this to end. Maybe the other man would get the message when he didn’t show up.

“Great. You won’t regret it I promise. Buzz me in, I’ll be right up.”

“What?” James was sure he’d heard wrong. He couldn’t have said what he thought he’d said. That would mean…

“I said Buzz me in. I’m downstairs at the front desk.”
