Original character: Catherine Poe
Prologue
Catherine sat quietly and watched as the people walked by: couples completely enamoured with each other, power walkers, the elderly out for their daily exercise, women with their children. She wondered if she would ever be one of them - any of them. Thinking back on her previous relationships - it seemed unlikely. She did not know how to pick the right guy or even the nice guy. Hers were always the wish I'd never met you, controlling, abusive guy. That's whe hhe had decided (or possibly she'd just given up) to be alone - she didn't trust her judgement enough to allow herself to be hurt again. Working at the museum, surprisingly had brought her quite a few offers, usually from wealthy, strange (and I repeat strange) men. For example, Kenneth Irons, his reputation did precede him. Many of the women at the museum and arts buildings had said yes to his offers. They always lasted one or two nights and then he'd move on. Catherine always said no, he frightened and repulsed her. Too much money, too much time, and too much ego. It was as if she knew him, had always known him and that's what truly frightened her. Stop reflecting on your life so much, she thought, there is still plenty of it to live. There is something out there just waiting to happen - she could sense it. Her cell phone rang, as if on cue.
"Hi, Gabriel. Sure I can meet you at the club tonight. You want to introduce me to Sara - the detective chick? Alright, see ya around ten."
Wonder what that's all about. Time to get back to work, she thought. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Kenneth Irons walking towards her with a young woman. Please don't recognize me, please.....he was next to her before she could move.
"Good afternoon, Catherine. Enjoying this beautiful day?"
"Hello, Mr. Irons. Yes, I thought I'd take my lunch outside today. It's nice to have seen you but I have to get back now."
"That's a shame, Catherine. I wanted to talk over some exhibit ideas with you. I'll have by aide call and set up an appointment. Maybe a lunch date - then I could have you all to myself for an hour or more."
She smiled at him and said that would be fine as she left them. Funny he never introduced his friend - shst bst be on her way out already.
He reached for his phone - something was going to happen tonight and he wanted Ian watching Sara when it did. Catherine, he thought, not long now and you will be brought into the fold. For all your womanly wiles, you'll never know what has hit you. I just wish it were me, but alas, that's not in the stars.
