It was just another day’s work for Tony Stamp. Standard boring breifing, same old irritating Reg making his same old irritating comments. Although Tony loved his job, some days he wished he would have not gotten out of bed. He was paired up with Mike Jarvis today, which was a good thing. At least he would have someone interesting to patrol with.

As they was making his way out of the nick towards the Area car, Inspector Monroe cornered Tony and Mike.

“Tony, Mike, may I have a word please?”

“Sure Gov, what’s the problem?” Tony asked. Mike stood behind Tony, arms crossed and head tilted towards one side.

“I’ve just had a call from CID. They need someone to join them on an obbo. Will you be ok on your own, Tony?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine Sir,” Tony sighed.

“Who am I seeing?” Mike asked.

“Alistair Greig and Chris Deakin are doing it. Go get changed and see them. Thanks Mike.”

Monroe walked away. Tony and Mike looked at each other.

“So much for an easy day’s nicking,” Mike said.

“Yeah, tell me about it,” Tony growled, glaring after Monroe’s departure.

It was 2:30 PM. Two and a half hours after the briefing and Tony was thoroughly bored. He almost wished he had been paired with that new puppy, Nick Slater, or even Reg, for that matter. Having Mike on board would have been great. He had a few assists, but no prisoners to deal with. It was a quiet shift. He turned into Halpin Road off of Canley High Street. At the end of the road he noticed a car in the middle of the road. Smoke was pouring out of it. He sped quickly down the narrow street and came to a stop a few metres behind the vehicle.

A beautiful woman, about 26 years old, was standing there looking at the car. She turned to look at Tony. Her beauty, her almost earthreal-quality, took him aback. She had long red hair and green eyes. She was tall, and slender.

“Oh thank God you came! I’m not sure what’s wrong with it and I don’t have breakdown cover! Could you help please?”
Tony nodded, “Sure love. Can you pop the bonnet for me?”

The woman got in the car and sprung open the bonnet. Steam bellowed out from inside of the engine. Tony peered inside and prodded something with his gloved hand.

“Yeah, I reckon it’s your radiator. This is steam, not smoke that’s coming out. Do you want me to get a tow for you?”

“Oh yes please! I had no idea where I could have gone, apart from knocking on people’s doors!”

“What’s your name?”

“Cindy. Cindy MacArthur.”

“Do you have a husband or boyfriend we could call?”

“No.. I’ve just moved here from Milton Keynes. I don’t know anyone.”

“Right.” Tony spoke into his radio. “Sierra Oscar from 595 receiving?”

“Go ahead Tony,” June Ackland said through the radio.

“I need a tow truck. Halpin road. I’ve got a lady here broken down and obstructing through traffic.”

“Received, on it’s way, Tony.”

Tony went back to stand next to Cindy. “So,” he asked, “What are you doing down here from Milton Keynes”

“Well, I got a job offer, to work in the West End. I do graphic design.”

“Why aren’t you at work now?” Tony asked.

“Well, I was feeling quite ill this morning. I only nipped out to get some groceries! I feel awful.”

“Where do you live at?”

“I live off of Ida Lane. You know, near Canley Fields.”

“Do you want a ride home once the truck’s came?”

“Oh yes please!” Cindy smiled gratefully at Tony. His heart almost melted. She was absolutely lovely. He noticed she was shivering in the crisp winter air and he had to resist the urge to put his arm around her to keep her warm next to him.

“Why don’t you wait in the car?” Tony motioned towards the area car.

“Thank you!” He opened the passenger side door for her. She slid into the car and he closed the door.

Cindy rolled down the window and Tony leaned against the car, talking to her.

“How long have you been down here in London?”

“Well, about 3 months now.”

“It must be lonely for you, what with you not knowing anyone.”

“Oh, it is! I’m terribly lonely. The people I work with are nice but they’re really trendy and wrapped up in the fast-paced career lifestyle. I’ve never been impressed with that club and trendy pub scene. I don’t have the money to dress like they do, and I think a lot of it is frivolous. I’m happy at home curled up with a cup of tea.”

Tony smiled, “Nothing wrong with going out once in a while!”

“True, but not to some silly club where the music is so loud you can’t carry on a decent conversation, the drinks are twice the price they should be and they’re watered down, and there’s no place to sit!”

Tony laughed, “Welcome to London!”

Cindy grinned and shrugged. “I guess I’m not adapting like I should be.”

“It takes a while to get used to it.”

The tow truck pulled into view. Tony directed it safely around the narrow alley to the front of the car. Cindy got out of the area car and stood on the pavement, watching Tony.

The truck driver lowered the large hook and stuck it under the car He walked over to Cindy.

“Where do you live then?”

“21A Ida Lane.”

“Right, we’ll tow it to Smithton’s then.”

Tony interrupted, “Not Smithton’s, mate. He’s bent.”

The driver eyed Tony for a second.

“Alright then, where should we tow it, mate?”

“Take it to Clark’s Garage.”
“Al “Alright, Clark’s it is. All the same to me really.” The driver scribbled down a receipt and handed it to Cindy.

“There you are, Misses. Call the garage for further details.”

Cindy nodded and said, “Thank you.”

The driver tightened the winch on the back of the van and the car was secured. He started his truck and drove off.

“dy fdy fly-by-nighters, they’d rather have your motor done up in dodgy gear than to get a proper job done!”

“So if my motor was done in dodgy gear?” Cindy looked at Tony.

“I’d be knocking on your door then.”

She grinned at him, “Can’t have that now can we?”

Tony smiled at her. She was so lovely. He was definitely going to ask for her number.

They made idle chit-chat for the 15 minute drive to her flat. Tony thought Cindy was a very intelligent woman, and, if he wasn’t mistaken, she seemed to like him too.

Tony pulled up along side the kerb outside of her house.

“Here you go, Cindy.”

“Oh Tony, how can I ever thank you for all you’ve done?”

“It’s all part of the job,” Tony said, and smiled, feeling valiant.

“Do you want to come up for some coffee?”

“I’m afraid I can’t. Not while I’m still on duty. But maybe you’d like to go out later? I know a nice quiet pub with no loud music and watered down drinks?”

Cindy smiled, “I’d like that. But are you sure you won’t come upstairs now?”

Tony hesitated. He really did want to go but was afraid of Inspector Monroe finding out.

“Yeah… I better not.”

Cindy grinned at him and snatched his hat off of the seat.

“Ooh, Mr. Police Officer, what a nice hat you have.”

“Oi, come on Cindy. Don’t do that! That’s a nickable offence you know.”

“Yeah, if you catch me first!”

Cindy jumped out of the car and ran into the block of flats.

Tony heaved himself out of the car and made his way up the steps and into the flat.

Cindy knew he was right on her heels and had the key to her flat in her hand. She hurriedly unlocked her front door and ran inside. She left the door open.

Tony burst through that aat and she stood there, grinning, wearing his hat. It was so big on her that he couldn’t see her eyes, just her nose and her grin. She looked so adorable he started to laugh in spite of himself.

“Very funny, Cindy… now hand it over…”

Cindy walked towards him, and reached up, putting the hat on his head. At the same time she wrapped her other arm around him, in an embrace. She looked up into Tony’s eyes.

“Well, are you going to nick me?”

Tony couldn’t help himself. He wrapped her in his arms and kissed her deeply.

“I’m arresting you for… turning on a police officer while on duty.”

They backed up against the door, slamming it shut. Tony kissed Cindy over and over again. He ran his hands through her long red hair and she ran her hands over his broad chest and shoulders.

“You’re so beautiful,” Tony whispered in her ear, while kissing her face gently…

“Make love to me, Tony…” Cindy whispered.

Tony checked his watch. He should be on refs now.

“One second…” he said.

Quickly speakingo hio his radio, “Sierra Oscar from 595”

“Go ahead Tony,” June Ackland said through the radio.

“I’m going on refs.”

“Received.”

Tony grinned at Cindy. He picker upr up in his arms easily and said, “Which way’s the bedroom?”

Cindy snuggled into him as he carried her to bed. He laid her down gently on the bed and removed his jacket and utility belt. Tony laid next to her.

“From the moment I pulled up there I thought you were so beautiful. I can’t believe this is happening.”

“Neither can I.” She smiled and kissed him, tracing a finger along his jaw line, “But I’m glad it is.”

They made love to each other in the short time they had. Tony laid back in bed and Cindy rested her head on his chest, listening to his heart beat. He almost drifted off to sleep when he heard the radio crackle.

“595 from Sierra Oscar, are you receiving?”

He sat upright, and swore. Cindy looked at him. He reached down and grabbed his radio.

“Go ahead Sierra Oscar.”

“Are you finished with your refs yet?”

“Um, I need another five minutes. Queuing at the bank.”

“Alright. But no longer, Tony.”

He hurriedly got dressed.

“I’m sorry about this Cindy. I really don’t want it to be this way.”

“That’s ok..” she sighed. “Will I see you again, Tony?”

“How about if I come by after my shift’s up, around 8:30?”

“Ok,” Cindy said. She got up and put on a dressing gown.

He held her at an arms length and looked at her. He kissed her deeply one last time.

“See you later, love.”

She followed him out of the bedroom into the front lounge. She watched as he got into the car and waved at him.

Tony was glad that Mike didn’t get paired with him after all, although he doubted anyone would believe what just happened! He couldn’t even believe it himself! And to think he thought today was going to be just another average day at work!

The End.
