Charming a Phoenix
The midmorning sun shone brightly, reflecting off of the stained glass windows of a lovely Victorian house. On the sidewalk, a tall whitered red man stood peering over his half moon spectacles, watching for any movement in or around the house. Satisfying himself that nothing was amiss, he went to the front door and rang the bell. Smoothing down his raincoat, he waited patiently for the door to be answered. Hearing loud footsteps, he was not surprised when the door opened and a young woman with red hair looked at him expectantly.
“Can I help you ?” Paige asked.
“You must be Paige. Yes, my dear, I need to speak with you and your sisters.” The elderly gentleman said with a warm smile. Paige found his use of her name disconcerting, as she had no idea who this visitor might be. But, she admitted to herself, she didn’t feel the least bit threatened by him. So standing aside she let him in and lead him into the parlor where Phoebe and Piper were talking. Upon seeing the stranger, both women stood and went into defensive postures. The old man chuckled, raising his hands up to reassure them.
“You must be Phoebe and Piper.” He said naming each sister correctly. “Have no fear, I am not here to harm you.”
“Now wait a minute.” Piper said, flinging her hands out in front of her, using her freezing power on the visitor. He merely shook his head slowly.
“That didn’t work.” Phoebe said out of the side of her mouth in a sing song way. “Why didn’t that work?”
“I am afraid you can not freeze me.” He said conversationally.
“Exactly who the hell are you ?” Piper said annoyed.
“Professor Dumbledore !?!” Leo said as he came into the parlor from the kitchen. He went over and embraced the old man happily. The sisters looked at each other completely confused, each gawking at the two men..
“Leo, my boy ! How have you been ? Married now, I hear, with a son.” The Professor said clapping the younger man on the back.
“Yes, sir. Is there …. Nothing’s happened up at the school, has it ?” Leo asked suddenly very concerned.
“No, no the school is fine. Our wards are holding, at least for now.” Dumbledore said.
“School ?” Phoebe asked looking from one man to the other.
“Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” The old man said with pride.
“Wait a minute …….” Paige said incredulously. “Hogwarts ? And you’re Professor Dumbledore ? You mean that Harry Potter stuff is real ?” Piper and Phoebe didn’t follow.
“Harry is quite real my dear, I assure you. I see you have read the books.”
“Yes, two.” Paige said sitting down as her knees had suddenly gone weak.
“Well, I will say that most of what is in the books is true, but there is much that has been omitted.” He said finally sitting in the armchair Leo indicated.
“Leo ? Care to explain ?” Piper asked raising an eyebrow at her husband.
“I ….um….. know the Headmaster because some of my charges went to his school. Really Piper, you can trust him. Professor Dumbledore is one of the greatest wizards to ever live.” The older man blushed mildly at the compliment.
“You exaggerate a bit, my boy, but thank you.” Dumbledore said looking pleased.
“Why don’t I make some tea and the Headmaster can explain why he’s here.” Leo said standing and going into the kitchen with Piper right on his heels. He filled the kettle and set it on the range, then prepared the tea pot, cups and a plate of cookies.
“Well ?” Piper finally demanded with her arms crossed. Leo looked up flinching at the anger in her cold stare. “Are you going to explain why you never told us about any of this ?”
“I couldn’t, Piper, you know that. My charges have a right to privacy and there has never been a reason to tell you about Professor Dumbledore or the school.” Leo said as he filled the tea pot with boiling water.
“But your wife doesn’t have a right to know about your life ?”
“Their ‘world’ has never crossed paths with yours. There was no reason for you to know anything about them. But I have a feeling that has changed. That must be why the Headmaster is here.” Leo said taking the tray into the parlor. Piper followed him with a plate of cookies and a small bowl of lemon drops. Piper furrowed her brow as she looked at the candy, but left it on the plate. She set it on the coffee table next to the tea tray.
“Lemon drops, Leo you remembered.” The wizard said delightedly, taking a candy and popping it into his mouth.
“Why is it you’re here, Professor Dumbledore ?” Paige asked taking a cookie from the plate.
“Please, call me Albus. I am afraid I have some rather disturbing information to relay to you.” With that he got all three sister’s attention.
“What is it, Albus ? Has you-know-who come back ?” Leo asked handing the older man a cup of tea.
“Yes, I am afraid he has.” Dumbledore said setting the tea cup on the table.
“Voldemort ?” Paige interjected. Leo cringed. Albus nodded. “So he’s real, too ?”
“Quite real now. He has come back in the flesh. He has a body now.” He said taking a sip of his tea. “Tom is becoming desperate now. Most of his plans over the last year have been thwarted. He is now seeking a new alliance.”
“Hold on. Translate for those of us who are lost. Who is you-know-who ? And how is it he didn’t have a body before ? Are we talking about a demon, what ? If so we should get the Book of Shadows. And who is this Tom guy ?” Piper said.
“Tom Riddle” Paige started, “is Lord Voldemort.” Leo cringed again. “Oh, Leo …. get a grip !”
“Paige is correct. I taught Tom myself, while he was at school. He is a very powerful wizard. I will explain more about him later. Right now, I need to relay my information, then we must leave.” Albus said leaning back in the chair.
“Leave ? We’re not going …..” Piper began, but Leo placed a hand on her arm.
“Voldemort,” Dumbledore said, then Leo cringed again. “Forgive me, Leo. Tom, as I said, is seeking a new alliance. I have reliable information stating Tom has approached the Queen of the underworld and struck a bargain.”
“Excuse me, Professbut but as the Charmed ones, Lilith already wants us dead. That’s nothing new.” Phoebe said.
“Perhaps not, but the bargain is if Vol… Tom or any of his followers can kill one or all of the Charmed ones, the demon community will assist the Dark Lord in taking over the wizarding world. The world, a kno know it, both muggle and wizard, would cease to exist should these two powers join and triumph.”
“Muggle ?” Piper asked.
“Non magical.” Paige answered.
“Well, they can’t be any worse than demons. Right ?” Phoebe asked. Albus raised an eyebrow.
“Can’t they ? A demon will have one specific power, one threat per say. A wizard can cast a spell, throw a potion, use wandless magic, some may even be able to turn into animals. It would take the power of three to take on one well prepared wizard. A raiding party of Death Eaters will consist of 6 to 8. This threat is both real and urgent.” The room had sobered up quickly, a silence falling on the group. Then the cry of a baby came from another room. Leo got up and left the room coming back swiftly with Wyatt.
“Albus, this is Wyatt.” Leo said holding the squirming baby out for the Professor to see.
“May I ?” The Headmaster asked as he reached for the baby. Leo placed Wyatt in the old man’s lap.
“Just be warned he can come with magical side effects.” Piper said as she watch her son grab the wizard’s beard.
“Really ?” Albus said right before Wyatt cooed loudly and the old man’s spectacles appeared in the baby’s hand. “How marvelous.”
