Beginning again

By the following evening Guy had also discovered that the position would also include the small but worthwhile estate of Thornbury, and this was promotion.

He set off towards Nottingham next morning feeling almost benign. Not quite, however. He had a very pleasant task to perform. First though he said his farewells to Bessie. She had been a very enjoyable bedmate, and he would miss her. At least he would leave her with the gift of knowing what she was entitled to expect in bed, her husband would need to improve his technique, or risk losing her.

Now for some fun. He headed for Vasey's office, pushed open the doors and strode in quite un announced.

'Never heard of knocking have we Gisborne?'

The Sheriff did not even look up. When he did, he found himself nose to nose with Gisborne. In some circumstances, a dream come true.

Not this time however.

'Do I have your attention?'

That quiet tone never boded well.

'Good because I don't intend to repeat myself. This, you may take as my resignation. I have been offered another position in Shrewsbury, and I've accepted.

He placed the appropriate document before Vasey.

So now, before I leave you, Vasey, I want to spell out a few facts. You are a louse, no worse, a boil on the a*r* of humanity. I've sold my soul for you, and fully intend on at least trying to buy it back while I can'.

Fighting the urge to smash his fist into Vasey's face, he strode out of the office.

At the first opportunity, Guy visited Luke, with whom he had things to discuss. The land he had received as Agnes's dowry, needed to be dealt with. He suggested to Luke that if he wished, it could be given to him to build a house for himself and Rebecca, or else it could be sold to provide his son and future daughter in law money to begin life together in Shrewsbury where a carpenter of his skill, could do better than in Nottingham at present. Luke promised to discuss the matter with Rebecca.

They decided in the end, to go to Shrewsbury, and arranged to marry before going.

There was time. Agnes was not able to travel now, so would need to remain in Locksley until after the birth. Alys came to Locksley, she had been invited to come to Shrewsbury, to help Agnes, and was keen as mustard. Guy, had to go to Shrewsbury to take up his new position, and only went contentedly, when told that a messenger would be sent to him as soon as the child was born.

In the first week of February. Meg once again was midwife to her friend, Agnes. to the surprise of all Lady Gisborne gave birth to not one but two babies. A son and a daughter. Luke, the proud elder brother, wanted to tell his father the news himself, and set off as soon as he could for Shrewsbury.

Guy was currently lodged with Giles and his wife Margaret, the house at Thornbury, and one close to the castle, better during the winter, were awaiting the arrival of Guy's family. The man in question was seated by the fire with Giles discussing work, when Guy was informed that a young man was here, saying he was Lord Gisbornes son. Sherrif and deputy shared a look.

' Don't leave the boy standing out there man!!' Beringar barked. 'I think he may have some good news'.

Luke's face said the affirmative. You have another son, he told his father proudly, and a daughter as well.

In the morning, Beringar sent his deputy back, with his son, to Nottingham for the last time.

'Bring them here soon Guy'. Margaret begged, 'and give our good wishes to your lady'.

That evening. Guy and Luke strode together into Locksley manor. Alys was walking across the hall, and cried out in delight.

'Guy, follow me. Agnes is longing to introduce you to your son and daughter'.

Agnes was seated in the solar, by the fire, her two babies in their baskets by her feet. Guy picked her up, kissing her until she was laughingly gasping for breath.

She showed the two babies to their father. Both dark haired like him and their brother, and with the same blue eyes.

'I thought,' said Agnes, that we could call them Giles, for dear Lord Beringar and Mary for your mother'.

THE END.

Thank you to Alice and Twiddle of the Armitage Army who have sweetly been readers for me.
