Chapter Eight

The music was loud and Lois was on her third beer while Chloe danced with Green Eyes in the firelight. The song that was playing was Madonna’s Forbidden Love. Some people were splashing around in the water while others sat and drank on the dock. It was a huge party all along the shoreline with people talking and dancing.

Just one smile on your face

Was all it took to change my fortune

Just one word from your mouth

Was all I needed to be certain

Once upon a time there was a boy, and there was a girl

Hearts that intertwined

We lived in a different kind of world

Lindsey was watching a couple of the football players running up and down the shoreline throwing the football back and forth to each other. His violet orbs would flicker from them back over to Clark who was dancing with Chloe. Clark was a really good dancer even with the goofy look on his face.

He turned his gaze to see Lois dancing alone and she needed no partner. The girl could dance and he could tell she had a happy buzz because of the looks she was getting from both guys and girls.

He stood up and stretched showing a sliver of ivory toned tummy that glowed in the light. He moved away from the light of the fire to find someplace quiet so he could think. Green eyes watched him disappear into the darkness like a lonely shadow.

“Look at Lois,” Clark said smiling and Chloe turned to see that her cousin always did have the right moves, “Why don’t you go show her how its done.”

Chloe laughed, “Trying to get rid of me?”

“No,” Clark said with a faint frown because he was having fun, “I’m going to go check on Lindsey.”

“Where did he go,” she asked looking around.

“He went that way,” Clark said pointing into the dark, “I’m going to go see if he’s okay.”

Chloe bit her bottom lip, “I’ll go with you.”

“No,” Clark said and then wondered why, “I mean…it might be a guy thing…and he might get hurt out there in the dark.”

Chloe looked up at him and smiled, “Even with amnesia, you always think of others.”

Clark looked down at his feet and jumped when Lois shouted louder than thunder, “Hey Chloe!”

“Be careful,” Chloe said and ran to see what Lois wanted.

Clark watched her run to Lois and then snorted when Lois pulled her into the dance which caused cheers to go out. He turned and jogged off into the direction Lindsey had went. He followed the sound of Lindsey’s footsteps on the sand and the soft even breaths that he took. He wondered why Lindsey had left the party to wander out here away from everyone.

Lindsey discovered a bunch of boulders and jumped up easily to stand on one. He could see fires from the party in the distance. It was so quiet and lovely out here. The night sky was full of silver stars and the lake looked as though it was littered with billions of glittering diamonds.

The dark waves rushed under and around the stone he was standing on as he took a seat. A single tear fell from a violet orb and he quickly wiped it away asking the silence that stretched around him, “Why?”

He looked up at the crescent silver moon that hung in the sky and sighed sadly. He silently removed his clothes and slipped into the cool water that felt perfect against his smooth porcelain skin. He smiled sadly and went under as the moon glowed with a bit more silver.

He came up and pushed his dark hair out of his eyes and started humming the lullaby “he” loved so much. He floated on his back and gazed up at the glowing moon.

Don’t lose your way

With each passing day

You’ve come so far

Don’t throw it away

Live believing

Dreams are for weaving

Wonders are waiting to start

Live your story

Faith, hope, and glory

Hold to the truth in your heart

He spread his arms out which sent small waves in different directions as he ran his long pale fingers through his raven locks. All the memories that they had shared deafened him to the approaching footsteps that were following the sound of his voice.

If we hold on together

I know our dreams will never die

Dreams see us through to forever

Where clouds roll by

For you and I

Clark knew that it was Lindsey singing and his voice was so sad. A warm wind blew through his curly hair as he walked closer to the boulders to see his friend floating in the water under the silver light of the moon. He looked so haunting as a pale mist hovered over the water around his floating figure.

Souls in the wind

Must learn how to bend

Seek out a star

Hold on to the end

Valley, mountain

There is a fountain

Washes our tears all away

Words are swaying

Someone is praying

Please let us come home to stay

Clark knew this song. It was a song that was sung to him all the time. Silvers of memories were coming back to him. He saw a small classroom with an animated cartoon playing on the television. It had been his favorite childhood movie. It was about friends trying to find their way home to a place where they were loved. He had begged his mom to buy him the movie and sing the song to him at bedtime. A tear fell from his eye. How did Lindsey know this song?

When we are out there in the dark

We’ll dream about the sun

In the dark we’ll feel the light

Warm out hearts, everyone

Lindsey could feel the tears falling from the corners of his eyes. He had been so happy and it was all ripped from his arms by an even more powerful hand than his own. He had felt warmth he had never known and now he felt a chilling cold.

If we hold on together

I know our dreams will never die

Dreams see us through to forever

As high as souls fly by

The clouds roll by

For you and I

Clark took a step forward and stepped on a stick causing it to snap. Lindsey shot up and splashed around with wide violet eyes to see him in the mist. Clark remembered reading a story in the library a few days ago about how the Goddess Artemis had been bathing in the moonlight and young prince just happened to see her. In her rage she turned him into a deer and had her hounds tear him to shreds.

“Clark,” Lindsey said in a small voice, “This is twice you’ve snuck up on me.”

“Sorry,” he said scuffing his feet, “I saw you leave and got worried.”

“I’m a big boy,” Lindsey said swimming a little closer, “I can take care of myself.”

“I can see that,” Clark said, “It’s others that I’m worried about.”

“Why,” Lindsey asked in curiosity.

“Smallville can be a dangerous place,” Clark told him climbing up on the boulder with ease to sit down, “Meteor infected people can pop up out of no where.”

Lindsey knew all about the meteor freaks from reading the Torch, but he liked hearing Clark talk. He listened to Clark explain some of them to him and smiled when Clark saw his clothes laying there in a pile next to his hand.

“Are you,” Clark asked nervously and Lindsey laughed.

“You’ve seen me before Clark,” Lindsey smiled as he stayed under the water for Clark’s sake.

“I know,” Clark said with a blush, “Its just that its weird.”

“How so,” Lindsey asked shaking his head jut to get Clark wet.

Clark put his hands out in defense laughing, “I don’t know.”

“Try to explain it,” Lindsey said swimming back a little ways and Clark loved how the moon reflection in the water glowed around Lindsey with white fire.

For some reason Clark trusted him. Lindsey had kept his back turned while in the shower for him. Not too many people would do something like that.

“I was reading my journal,” Clark said looking up at the sky, “To learn more about who I was before I lost my memories.”

“And,” Lindsey asked gliding closer.

Clark looked around and then at his friend, “I’m different.”

“Everyone is different Clark,” Lindsey said with a smile, “Its what makes each of us unique.”

“I’m different,” Clark said, “From the other guys on the football team.”

“I totally agree,” Lindsey said to Clark’s horror, “You have a brain and make good grades.”

“Not that,” Clark said with a snort, “I looked it up online.”

“What did you look up?”

“I’m gay,” Clark said looking away, “I have desires for the same sex as me.”

“That’s it,” Lindsey asked with a snort and stopped when he saw the look Clark was giving him.

“Its looked down on,” Clark said, “I read some really horrible stories…and I cried.”

He had actually cried his emerald eyes dry. A lot of the stories had been terrible and down right evil. How could anyone treat another human like that? He was an alien. He could only imagine what could happen to him.

“Clark,” Lindsey said swimming right up to him on the boulder, “You can’t help who you are attracted to and who you aren’t.”

Clark looked down at him and smiled into those violet orbs, “You have an amazing voice.”

“Thank you,” he said with a smile as he pushed off the rock to swim backwards, “Do you have your eyes set on someone?”

“I think so,” Clark told him.

“Who,” Lindsey asked with deep curiosity.

“It’s a secret,” Clark said and removed his shirt and shoes before jumping in.

Lindsey yelped and dove under when Clark launched himself up into the air to come down with a splash. Lindsey surfaced just in time for Clark to splash him in the face.

“Cheater,” Lindsey shouted and splashed back, “You must pay!”

Clark laughed and splashed him back, “Where did you hear that song you were singing?”

Lindsey stopped splashing and looked into Clark’s emerald eyes, “I use to sing it to someone I really love.”

“Yeah,” Clark asked hearing the deep sadness and seeing it in those luminous violet orbs.

“I would hold him in my arms,” he said as his wet hair fell across to hide his eyes, “And sing his nightmares away.”

“You just of really loved him,” Clark said sadly even though on the inside he was happy that he was not so alone. He had feelings for Lex but deep down inside hidden in the darkness his feelings burned for someone else, someone he could not remember.

“I still do,” Lindsey said looking down into the water so Clark could not see his face, “But he has forgotten me.”

“What,” Clark asked in horror, “How could someone forget someone like you?”

“Oh, the irony,” Lindsey wanted to scream but decided to tell his story instead of making Clark’s ears bleed.

“He was leaving his home because everyone he loved had betrayed him in some way,” Lindsey said, “I loved him so much by my father would not allow us to be together.”

“That’s horrible,” Clark said in outrage, “But how did he forget you?”

“He came to my home and begged me to go away with him,” Lindsey told him, “I agreed right away but my father walked in just as we were leaving.”

“I confronted my father but he pushed me to the side like a doll and that was when he attacked my father,” Lindsey said softly, “He would of won had my father not got his bearings.”

“What did he do,” Clark asked.

“My father pushed him and he fell over backwards off the balcony,” Lindsey said remembering that this was the mortal watered down version of what had really happened, “I screamed and scrambled to see him laying there at the bottom of the balcony with blood pooling out from his head.”

“My mother screamed for someone to call 911,” Lindsey said and began shaking, “And I ran down the stairs in fear.”

Clark didn’t know what to say. He felt so bad for Lindsey.

“My father shouted after me but I ignored him,” Lindsey said as he remembered how he flung himself down after Kal, “I ran to my fallen lover to see that he was still breathing and my mother screamed for my father to go.”

“Months later,” Lindsey said finally realizing that Clark was holding his hands, “He woke up not knowing who he was or who I was for that matter.”

“That must have been so painful,” Clark said realizing that had to of been one of the dumbest things to ever leave his mouth.

Lindsey nodded, “It felt like my heart had been ripped out while still beating.”

“What happened,” Clark asked knowing he shouldn’t of asked but he was curious.

“He didn’t remember ever loving me,” Lindsey said while taking his hands from Clark, “He fell in love with some blonde girl and now has three kids.”

Clark felt devastated, “That’s not right.”

“No,” Lindsey said with a bitter smile, “My father saw to that.”

“What do you mean,” Clark asked feeling the darkness get a little colder around them.

“My father said that he would kill him if I didn’t stay away from him,” he whispered, “So I stayed away in order to protect him. My love for him caused him to almost be killed and I could not live with myself if my father carried out his threat.”

“You loving him had nothing to do with what happened,” Clark told him, “Your father is to blame for not accepting you.”

“I’m sorry,” Clark quickly apologized, “I shouldn’t have asked or judged like that.”

“No Clark, don’t apologize,” Lindsey said and then went under to clean away the tears before coming back up, “It felt good getting it all out.”

“Are you sure,” Clark asked.

“Yeah,” Lindsey smiled, “Maybe we should get back before Lois and Chloe think I’ve spirited you away.”

“Okay,” Clark said with a small smile before asking, “Are you sure you’re all right?”

“I will be,” Lindsey said softly as he began to put his clothes on and thought, “Soon enough.”

Clark kept his back to him and he looked over Clark’s shoulder to see that he was drawing a circle in the sand.

888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

Lois was on her eighth can of beer and Chloe was sitting in the sand close to the fire watching people who were not drunk leaving. She was beginning to worry about Clark because he had been gone for a long time and she had promised Mrs. Kent that she would keep an eye out for him. Why did she let him off like that on his own? Did Mrs. Kent know how to shoot again?

“Have some,” Lois giggled while holding the can in Chloe’s face, “It’s yummy.”

Chloe rolled her eyes and pushed the can away, “I’m starting to worry about Clark.”

“Oh don’t be such a granny,” Lois chided, “You need to stop moping over Cow Eyes.”

“I’m not moping,” Chloe snapped causing to Lois to curse when she dropped her beer, “He’s my best friend and I worry about him.”

“Why are you worrying about me,” Clark asked from behind the two of them and Chloe spun around to see him beside a gorgeous moonlit Lindsey, “Did I do something to make you worry?”

“No,” Chloe smiled happy to see that he was all right, “You were just gone for a long time and I got concerned.”

“He was with me,” Lindsey said looking at her and she was stunned at how lovely he looked standing next to Clark in the firelight, “I was feeling a little down.”

“That’s because,” Lois snorted as she opened another can of beer, “None of you are drunk.”

Clark looked at her in horror, “Are you drunk?”

“Indeed I am Green Eyes,” she smiled and chugged the entire can and crunched it against her head while burping, “And I feel good.”

“My mom is going to kill me,” Clark cried and looked around the site to see people passed out and others talking.

He looked wildly at Chloe, “Can she stay with you tonight?”

“Why me,” Chloe asked wanting to jerk his chain a bit.

“You’re her cousin,” Clark said with worry in his eyes. He had promised to look after people and Lois was acting not Lois like at all. She was even more loud and obnoxious. He did not like her drunk at all.

Lois moved to get up and stumbled but Lindsey caught her, “Looks like someone’s had just a little too much to drink.”

“You’re gorgeous,” Lois giggled as she wrapped her arms around him to steady herself, “Don’t you think violet is gorgeous Green Eyes?”

Clark knew what she meant but replied, “Violet is a very pretty color.”

“Yes,” Lois giggled as Clark moved to help Lindsey with her, “He really is.”

Chloe was watching the three of them walking towards her car in a new light. Did Lois know something about Clark that she didn’t? How could that be? She was Clark’s best friend. He had his secrets but he would never tell Lois any of them.

She jumped when Lois shouted or was she trying to sing, “I love rock’n roll!”

Lindsey howled, “Make it stop!”

Clark almost lost his grip on her because he was laughing so hard. He really did not want to accidentally snap Lois in two with a guffaw.

Chloe shook her head while pulling her keys out of her pockets jogging after them as Lois snarled, “I have a damn good singing voice Violet!”

“Of course you do,” Lindsey said as he helped Clark get her in the car, “You just keep telling yourself that.”

“What the,” she started but was cut off when Clark slammed the door on her.

“Are you taking her,” he asked Chloe hopefully.

Chloe looked to see Lois giving Lindsey the finger who was making funny faces at her through the glass, “Fine.”

Clark smiled and it was like watching the sun rise.

“You owe me,” she said and punched him in the arm before getting in the car.

Lois turned to look at her, “Why do you have the child safety locks on?”

Chloe looked over at her shoulder to see Lindsey with his face pressed up against the glass with his tongue out and eyes crossed. She looked back at Lois, “Does that answer your question?”

Lois smacked the glass and Lindsey backed away laughing to bump into Clark’s broad back which caused Clark to stumble forward and almost fall.

“Sorry,” Lindsey apologized with a small smile.

“It’s okay,” Clark said hiding the surprise that should have been written all over his face. Lindsey had bumped into him and caused him to stumble and almost fall flat on his face. How did he manage that? Nobody was able to move him.

Both jumped when Chloe honked the car’s horn and rolled Lois’s window down, “Are you ready?”

Lindsey got in and Clark walked around the front of the car to get in on the other side. Chloe watched him and then asked herself, “Why are his pants wet?”

888888888888888888888888888888888

Chloe pulled up to at very nice house and whistled as Lois snored with her face pressed against the window, “Nice place Lindsey.”

“You think so,” he asked looking at the boring manor, “After my parent’s divorce settlement my mother and I have been able to live comfortably.”

“Cool,” Chloe said and then flinched, “I mean…that you can live comfortably I mean.”

Lindsey smirked and then frowned, “Looks like Mom is still up.”

“Is that bad,” Clark asked hoping that his friend was not in trouble.

“No,” he said smiling at Clark’s concern, “She just tends to worry is all.”

“Worry,” Chloe asked.

Lindsey turned from Clark to her, “She does not approve of drinking and is likely watching to make sure I don’t fall into the rose bushed.”

Clark smiled and Chloe faked a snort, “See you three at school.”

“Yeah,” Clark said and quickly picked up his backpack as Lindsey and Chloe watched him rip some paper to write something down and then handed it to him, “In case you need something.”

Lindsey smiled warmly and looked down at the number, “Thanks Clark.”

“No problem,” Clark said and watched him get out, “Night.”

“Night,” Lindsey said and closed the door and watched them drive off.

He stood there for a few minutes enjoying the peace and quiet before turning to walk towards the big house. He walked up the steps and the door opened and closed behind him. Tonight had been wonderful.

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888

His mom was curled up on the couch and his dad was rocking in the chair when he walked in, “Where’s Lois?”

“With Chloe,” Clark said smiling at how peaceful him mom looked, “Why are you up?”

“I never sleep,” Jonathan said looking at his son, “Until I know you and your mother are safe in your beds.”

Clark walked over and hugged his dad, “You can go to sleep now Dad.”

8888888888888888888888888888888888

Chloe got Lois into bed and walked across her room to stare out her window. Clark had been gone for a long time, his pants had been wet, his hair had been wet, Lindsey’s hair had been wet, and he gave Lindsey his phone number. Something was going on with her best friend. Why wouldn’t he tell her what was going on?
