Chapter 9

“Lucas and I are moving back in together.” Nathan says days after being released from the hospital, a hint of defiance already in his voice in preparation for the oncoming argument.

Deb looks at him for a moment, studying his expression with confusion. “You already know why I disagree with this. And I know I can’t convince you otherwise, so I won’t even waste my breath. You’re not here to ask my permission, are you?”

Nathan bows his head slightly and doesn’t reply.

“You’ve been through enough, so you needn’t worry about me threatening to tell anybody, but don’t think for one second I condone this. I wish there were words I could say to make you change your mind. I never wanted this for you…”

“I know, mom.” Nathan says, guiltily.

“You think I haven’t noticed how different you’ve been lately? I hate seeing you like this. So if this is really what you want, I won’t stand in your way.” Deb sighs. “Not that my opinion seems to mean much to you these days.”

“Don’t be like that, of course it does. I don’t expect you to be happy for me, I just hope you’ll still love me…even if I am doing something you don’t agree with.” Nathan admits.

“Of course I’ll still love you.” Deb sighs. “I just…wanted more for you than…this.”

“Mom, after everything that’s happened, this is the best I can hope for right now.” Nathan tells her. “This is what I need. I can’t do it without him.”

Deb nods. In her own way, she understands. “Do you have a place?”

“We found one, not far from the old one.” Nathan answers. “Cheaper, actually, so…” He breaks off, awkwardly.

“If this is what you want, you have my support.” Deb half-smiles. “God knows, he’ll do a better job of taking care of you than I have.”

“Mom.” Nathan warns, not wanting her to put herself down. Not on his account.

“Karen’s okay with this?” She asks, changing the subject.

“She doesn’t know the full story, but…yeah. Lucas talked her round.” Nathan explains. “We’re moving in next week.”

Deb hugs him. “Promise me you’ll still come home to see me once in a while?”

“Of course.” Nathan smiles, holding her tightly. It’s the closest he’s ever going to get to acceptance and it’s more than Nathan could ever have hoped for.

*~*~*~*

Lucas takes a deep breath of fresh air as he steps out of the car. The area isn’t quite as nice as their previous residence, but it’s still home. He quickly makes his way round the front of the car and opens the passenger door, helping Nathan out and passing him his crutches. “Need me to carry you over the threshold?” He jokes, shutting the car door.

“You wouldn’t be able to lift me.” Nathan teases in return, hobbling over to the front door. “Home sweet home.”

Lucas slides the key in the front door and opens it, helping Nathan inside. They look around, a real sense of pride in what they see.

“I think we should unpack the bedroom first.” Nathan grins.

Lucas prods him in the ribs. “What happened to resting and recuperating? I’m under strict orders from your mom not to let you do anything too strenuous.”

“But its gonna be weeks before this comes off!” Nathan pouts.

“Taking things slow, remember? For you and for me.” Lucas reminds him. “Don’t get me wrong, after all this time all I wanna do is drag you to bed, but you’re still injured and I’m…scared, I guess. I just want to have you close for a while. Until I feel like its safe to take things further.”

Nathan nods and leans over to kiss him, gently. “You got it, babe.”

Lucas laughs, leaning into Nathan’s embrace. “Seeing as you’re pretty much useless to me right now, how about I unpack and you put your feet up?”

“Sounds like a plan.” Nathan grins at him.

Lucas goes to head back out to the car, but stops, looking back at his brother. “I’m already starting to feel better, you know. I know you can’t fix everything, but just having you around makes it easier.”

That night, with a half-unpacked apartment all to themselves, Lucas lies in Nathan’s arms, the warm protective body next to his a constant reminder that he’s not alone anymore.

“I’ve missed you so much.” Lucas whispers into Nathan’s chest, his hold tightening around the larger boy’s frame.

Nathan finally feels a calm washing over him, a welcome break from the chaos his brain has been in for the past few months. Having Lucas by his side again and knowing that this time round, they truly will be safe, is a feeling like no other. He knows it isn’t going to last forever and he doesn’t expect a happy ending, neither of them do. All they can do is enjoy the now and do everything they can to repair the damage Dan has caused. It’s not ideal, but its enough.

The End.

=========================================

Author’s Note: Sorry the chapter’s kinda short. I wanted to add a sex scene but then after everything, it didn’t seem like a good time. Don’t worry though, I already have several new fics in the making, so if you feel deprived, go check those out. This fic has ended up being over 70 pages long. It was meant to be 3 pages maximum. In fact, it started out as a drabble, so going from 100 words to 29,410 was something of a surprise. Still, hope you enjoyed! Reviews really do help me write more, so if you liked, let me know!
