Barbara in Trouble

CHAPTER NINE

Barbara was at home while Richard was still at work. Helena had driven her back home that evening so that Richard did not have to come home early tonight so he could finish up on a business proposition. By the house they lived in, you would never know that her husband, Dick Grayson, who prefer to go by Richard, had become the new Bruce Wayne of New Gotham. They had enough money to buy half of New Gotham, but they had both made a vow to live modestly and use the money only to help the people of New Gotham.

She would have preferred to be at the bat cave right now but Richard had made her promise to take it easy and only go back to being the Oracle part time until after the baby was born. So there she was, laying on the couch, elevating her swollen ankles on top of two couch pillows. Bored out of her mind, she was flipping though all the news channels to keep up with what is going on in the world.

Her thoughts were still on last night’s joyful reunion with Dinah. She was astounded about the change in her over a year and a half. Her fighting skills were perfectly homed. She had displayed patients and intellect. Heck, today was her first day out in the real world working in a professional job as a police file clerk. There were so much changes between the three of them. It was going to be tough to reunite once again and continue where they left off. Some major adjusts would have to be made.

The sound of two gun shots startled her. Letting out a moan, she pulled herself to sit up in the couch. Next, she had to push herself off the couch. She slowly wobbled to the front window and looked out. What was once a peaceful street had become a riot zone. What was off about what she was seeing was that the entire riot was being started by an angry mob of business men in suits and using their briefcases as weapons. They were going door to door of each house and ransacking them. God knows what happened to the people that were in each house. Barbara rushed to the phone by the couch and franticly dialed.

Richard’s cell phone rang right at the worse possible minute: in the middle of a business meeting. He quickly peeked down at the caller ID to see his name on the screen. It was Barbara trying to reach him. It had to be an emergency. “Uh, gentlemen, I have to take this call. This is an extremely important call.” He unfolded his cell phone and put it up to his ear. “Hello?”

“Richard…” It was Barbara. She sound frightened which was extremely uncharacteristic of her. His first thought that was that there was a complication in the pregnancy.

“Barb? What’s wrong? Is the baby alright?”

“There’s a riot on our street! They are attacking each and every house. They’ll be here soon. Please Richard, come quickly!” She cried franticly. She was on the verge of tears.

It was clear to Richard that she was afraid for not only her life, but her baby as well. She now has a little one to protect. “Barbara, stay calm. I’m on my way. Find a safe place to hide until I can get there.”

“Please hurry!”

Richard folded the phone back up and began packing his suitcase. “Gentleman, you must go on without me. An emergency has been brought to my attention that needs my immediate attention.”

“Mr. Grayson, this is highly usual to walk out in the middle of negotiations like this!” one of the men protested.

“Mr. Thompson, I founded and built this company by the sweat of my brows. I’ve made this company as big as Wayne Enterprise. If I deem a situation more important than discussions of another takeover, that is my judgment call. I still own eighty-percent of this company.” Richard slammed his suitcase and ran for the door. He could not help but hear those words he just said from the mouth of Bruce Wayne. “God, I’m turning into another Bruce Wayne.”

As threw the open and made his way for the elevator. While waiting, he pulled out his cell phone and hit the automatic dial for No Man’s Land. After a few rings, Gibson answered the phone. “I need to speak to Helena right away!”

Dinah’s day was done. She packed up her suitcase and was going back to Richard and Barbara’s beautiful home. As she left her office, she met up with Reese who was still planning to stay a few more hours. “How was your first day?”

“It was great, “Dinah smiled. Her cell phone went off in her right sport’s jacket pocket. She pulled it out and answered the call. “Hello….I’m on my way!”

“What’s up?” Reese asked after the short conversation.

“That was Helena. Barbara is in trouble.”

“Go on ahead and do your thing. I’ll be there to help shortly.”

Dinah, with her suitcase in hand, ran for the women’s room. Locking the door behind her, she threw up her suitcase onto a sink and clicked it open. She reached in and scooped out her Black Canary costume.

Barbara hung up the phone, and franticly tried to think of a place to hide. The only thing she could think of was their personal bathroom in their room upstairs. She started towards the stairs until she came to a frightening realization: she forgot to barge the front door.

Barbara rushed as fast as her heavy belly would allow her. She only got half way when the door was kicked open. Barbara gasped as the room began to flood into the house. Amongst the groups were men and women dressed in business suits and some dressed in casual wear. They came running in like rabid dogs. Barbara found herself being pushed back into the living room and pushed onto the couch. Five of them stared at her while everyone else began causing havoc, destroying everything they could get their hands on.

“You’re one of those meta-human freaks!” The balding businessman said in his proper English while looking at her in disgust.

“I don’t know what you are talking about. I am not a meta-human!” Barbara replied truthfully.

“Stop lying!” he shouted at the top of his lungs. “I can see the meta powers flowing through you. We don’t want your kind here in Gotham!”

They began to surround her. Desperately, she swung both of her feet, but it was a futile move. They were piling up on here, one of them had wrapped their hands around her neck. Despite being choked, her primary concern was the pressure they were putting on her belly and the baby inside of her. She waved her arms wildly, hoping to find something within reach to grab hold of and use as a weapon, but she was not finding anything.

The sound of a door crashing from the kitchen brought in some hope as Barbara fought to stay conscious. Virtually flying into the room was the Huntress. She instantly began to clean house as she ripped people off of Barbara. She sap, gasping, breathing in the air that had been temporarily cut off from her lungs. Helena then progressed in kicking some tail throwing punches and kicks. Soon, everyone on the room saw the intrusion of the Huntress and came to the rescue.

Doing her best to protect Barbara, there was no way she alone could get her out of the room. She was barley able to keep up with the growing number of people coming at her. She delivered a high kick across the face to an attacking business woman, causing her stumble backwards. They were piling in on the two women like zombies. The Huntress was not going to be able to hold them back much longer.

The Black Canary joined the fray, jumping through the front window, crashing into three men in the process. Almost immediately they began to pile up on her. Using her meta powers, everyone on top her went flying back either into a wall or on top of the crowd of the angry mob. Both women were fighting the dozens of angry people which seemed like it would never end. Even with the two women fighting together, they were overwhelmed. There was still no way to get Barbara out of the house.
“Barbara !” Richards screamed above the racket of the angry people. Barbara was astonished how fast he arrived. She turned to see him coming into the living room, violently fighting his way into the living room.

“Richard!” Barbara screamed. A skinny, balding, casually dressed man cam running clumsily at him like a wild bore. Richard, without hesitation, broke his nose with powerful jab. He reached the couch and helped her over it. “Thank god you’re here!”

“Reese is right out side with police back up. He’s going to cause a brief distraction and I’m getting you out of here. Huntress and Canary are going to keep them busy while we make a get away.

Barbara nodded, wondering what kind of distraction Reese had in mind. Right outside the house, the sound of six gun shots up into the air caught everyone’s attention. Outside the window, Reese, and a small squad of his police were outside with guns drawn. Some of them began filing out of the house to attack the police for their own safety.

The Huntress knew that they would be overwhelmed in a matter of seconds. Reese had told her over the phone that he could take care of himself and not to worry about him, but she could not help but worry. He had no meta powers and fighting skills compared to her own. Yet, surrendering to her promise to trust him, she stayed in front of Richard and Barbara to give them a clear get away out the back door.

The Black Canary fighting her way through the angry mob, got herself in position besides the Huntress. Side-by-side they fought and not one of them were able to get through. Occasionally, to continue to assure that they did not get through, the Black Canary formed shields out of blue energy to reflect them away. Richard and Barbara raced into the kitchen to the back door. The Huntress and the Black Canary remained at the doorway, severely narrowing the passage way to get to Richard and Barbara, making it a whole lot easier to hold the mob back.

Richard and Barbara ran out the back door and made there way around the building. As they reached the front, the police, wearing riot gear were throwing gas grenades to try to slow the mob down. This provided an adequate get away for them and for the Huntress and Black Canary to escape without being seen.

An angry casually dressed man, threw himself out of one of the windows, directly in front of them. The glass had cut his face pretty bad, but he seemed so possessed that he showed no pain at all. Tapping Barbara on the shoulder; a signal to her to run, Richard pulled him away, allowing his wife to escape. Richard leaned back and high kicked him up the side of his head, sending him crashing sideways into the side of the house.

That was all that was needed to render him unconscious. Richard easily caught up to his wife and led her to a their car parallel parked two houses down. Richard looked back towards the police to see Reese looking on, making sure there were safe. Giving him the thumbs up, he aided his wife and guided her to the car.

Reese, catching the signal from Richard rubbed his hand and tapped on a ring on his forefinger. It was the same ring Helena had given him a long time ago to be able to contact her when needed.

The Huntress felt her ring vibrate which was their signal that they were out of harms way. Their job was done. “Let’s fall back!” The Huntress announced. “Let’s head for the mansion!”

The two of them made a mad dash for the door with the angry mob running after them. The moment the were outside, both women leaped high into the air to land on separate branches high up off the ground. The angry mob stood there and stared as the women leaped almost like frogs from their branches unto the roof top of the second floor of the home. From there, it did not take much for them to disappear without being seen by anyone else. As they had left, back up had arrived, and now a overwhelming number of police in riot gear had surrounded the house to take care of the situation.
