Chapter Nine

"Janet," he yelled again still running down the hallway panic beginning to spread.

"Daniel?" came the female voice, stepping out of another room "Daniel, what on earth-?" she began as the out of breath archaeologist turned and ran towards her and leaned heavily on the wall to catch his breath. She waited for him to speak, wondering what could possibly be wrong.

"We have a serious, serious problem," he started when he could.
Janet looked at him once taking in his words. "Come back to my office. We can talk in there, and you can have some coffee."

When Daniel was seated in one of the leather chairs with a warm very strong cup of coffee, Janet waited. When the information wasn’t offered she took the initiative.

"So what is this serious problem, Daniel?"

"WHAT? You don’t know? Didn't you check the lab results?" he choked, looking at her in shock.

"No, I haven’t had a chance yet... Not good news I take it?"
Daniel sagged in the chair his cradling his head in his hand. Slouching backwards, he stared at the ceiling for a moment before he finally answered.

"We... SG-1 that is... were infected with a virus on the last planet... I don’t know if it’s contagious or anything... We have to go back."

"Oh, I see... No, I don’t suppose that is a good thing. For how long?" she asked, her mind instantly flicking to a certain white haired man and a moose.

"I believe Jack’s exact words were... some prolonged time on Px5-271. Meaning we will be there until we find a cure... However long that takes..." He sighed heavily, draining the rest of the coffee from his cup and looking into the bottom of it hopefully.

Janet smiled and took the cup before retuning it refilled. Daniel took another deep swallow, ignoring the fact it was slightly too hot. When you were addicted, you really didn’t care.

"The problem is I don’t think Sephiroth will take it that well. Okay I don’t think he will accept it at all. Look what he did to Irvine after only half a day," finished Daniel after drinking a considerable amount of yet another cup of coffee.

"Could you maybe take him with you..?" she asked trying desperately to help Daniel out. When he just stared at her, she rethought her words. ”No, I suppose you couldn't. I know it’s a horrible thought but what if you just left him here and dealt with the... withdrawal... thing when you got back? I'm sure he won’t be that hard to confine," she finished offering Daniel the only other option she could think of.

"I'm not so sure. There are times when I'm... well..." Daniel began to blush ferociously “There are times when... huh... he and I are... well... he's rather powerful. I'm not sure what would happen if he wasn't... you know.... for however long this will take." he finished quickly after stumbling over the whole sentence.

Three and a half hours later he was back in the small room in the back of the infirmary, fulfilling his role of Mako. After all, between Jack and Frasier it had been four hours and with an addiction, time is always relative. Several hours later he was sitting in the briefing room, listening as everyone calmly discussed the base’s impending doom. Daniel hoped Janet had been right in saying she could handle Sephiroth... because if not, he had a feeling things would be substantially different upon SG-1's return.

While they talked, Daniel remained lost in his thoughts, still not entirely convinced that this was at all a good idea. No matter how infected with an alien virus he and every one else was. Nor did he notice Teal’c giving him a measuring glance every now and then. It wasn’t until Sam said something oddly like ‘Mako’ that his brain locked onto the conversation, finally paying attention. This response caused the Jaffa's brow to arch in question, and still Daniel didn't notice which in itself was odder.
