Ch 9

He just sat and watched her. When did Sara have a baby? Is she married? She looks happy. He didn’t want her to see him. If she moved on he made up his mind to be happy for her. He got up to walk away. The voice called him back.

“Griss?” He turned to see Sara approaching with the stroller. “Grissom, is that you?”

He nodded. “Yes.”

“You look.” She stopped.

“I know, I look like hell.”

Sara laughed. “How have you been?” I’ve been lonely.

“Good.” He lied.

“You look Happy.” He searched for a ring on her finger.

“I am. Jillian keeps me busy.” Did the name signal anything?

“When did you have a baby?

“About four months ago.” You’re smart, do the math.

“Oh.” She must have met someone as soon as she left Vegas. “You look good.”

“Thanks.”

Sara was bigger than he remembered. The pregnancy left her curvier. He couldn’t help staring at her full buxom.

“I breast feed her.” She said noticing his glare. Come on ask about the baby.

He shot his glance quickly and shifted it to the baby. “Is she sleeping?”

“Yes.” Come on, ask more questions.

“So where is her father?”

In front of me. “He doesn’t know about her.”

He looked down at the baby. “She is beautiful like her mother.”

The baby started crying. Sara bent down to pick her up. “Shh, Jillian. Settle down Honey.” Sara was rocking the baby in her arms.

“Her name is Jillian?” He asked.

“Yes. After her father.” Nothing. It didn’t even register.

“What’s her full name, Sara?”

“Jillian Sidle Grissom.” That should do it.

“What?” He was stunned.

“She’s your daughter, Griss. She even has your eyes.”

“How? I thought we were careful.”

“Being careful isn’t 100%.”

He was speechless. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“We left on bad terms. I decided I wanted to keep her. It wasn’t a choice for you. I made it for me.” Sara cuddled the baby.

“Can I hold her?” He asked, looking at the baby.

Sara passed Jillian to Grissom. “You have to support her head.”

Grissom took the baby and cuddled her against his chest. “Hey, sweetie. I’m your daddy.”

Sara revelled in the interaction between Grissom and Jillian. She was glad she found him. She hoped they could patch things up if not for themselves, for Jillian.

Sara was in the park for hours allowing Grissom to bond with Jillian. He was surprised at how good he was with her.

“Griss, she should go home for a nap.” Sara said softly.

“Oh…alright then.” He spoke with a hint of disappointment. “I’ll allow you to get back to your life.”

“I was going to invite you back with us.” She spat. “But if you feel that way, never mind.”

“Sara.”

“What?”

“I don’t want to infringe on your new life.”

“Grissom, you are her father. It is not an infringement.” Sara hesitantly held out her hand for him to take.

They walked slowly to her apartment. Sara allowed him to push the stroller and she walked behind them. Once at her apartment, she opened the door and scooped up the baby.

“Have a seat,” She said to Grissom. “Make yourself at home. I’ll be back in a few.”

He slumped on the couch. So many things were running through his head. What now? Will this work? Does she still want me? Will I be able to be a father?

He realized that Sara had been gone for more than a few minutes and went to look for her.

Sara went to the nursery with Jillian. After changing the baby, she sat in the rocking chair to nurse her. She rocked her to sleep and herself along with it.

Grissom walked in to find the baby still suckling Sara’s breast as they both slept. He stood back watching the site before him. Sara was so beautiful as a mother. He mentally smacked himself forever letting her go. He walked over two the sleeping beauties before him. He picked the baby up and placed her into her crib. Sara woke up, a bit embarrassed by her bare chest being revealed to Grissom.

“Sorry.” She said fixing her shirt. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”

“It’s ok, I was enjoying the sight.” His face began to glow red from embarrassment.

“You were watching us?”

“Yes.” He admitted. “You looked so beautiful. I couldn’t help myself.”

Sara smiled softly. “I’ve missed you.” Sara admitted.

Grissom bent down to kiss the now sleeping baby. Sara enjoyed the exchange. “We need to talk.”
