Chapter 9
Mathew had moved from his small apartment and rented a town house a few doors down from Gil’s. Matthew met Gil at his back gate. The elder Grissom choked back a laugh.
“Hello there, little brother. Why may I ask are you wearing only boxers in your back yard?”
Gil liked the feeling of having something to hold over a sibling’s head. He dangled Matthew’s spare key in front of him. Matthew grabbed for the key, but Gil sidestepped his brother’s long arms.
Matthew let out a low hiss. “Give me the damn key, Gil, or I am going to be an only child again.” Gil tried to see over his brother’s shoulder.
Gil moved out of reach again. He knew that Matthew would not move past the safety of the gate only dressed in a robe. Gil lifted his heels and peered over Matthew’s shoulder. “Whose phone did you use any way?”
Matthew glared. “Either you give me key, or you are going to have to explain to me why the only way I could get in touch with you is by calling Sara.”
Grissom moved the key within Matthew’s reach.

“Are you going to ask me or not?”
“Ask you what?”
“About Sofia”
Gil looked up over his glasses at his brother. “I don’t think I have any questions…you, naked, backyard, beautiful woman, locked out of the house. I do this for a living.” Gil’s investigator mind paused as he ran the facts through his mind. “Unless of course you are gay which is fine by me, but in that case you do have some explaining to.”
Matthew skated past the comment.
“Are you going to ask how I knew to call you and Sara?”
“Pass me the jelly.” Matthew fulfilled the request. “You are a mathematician. You saw Sara and I together earlier in the day. Probability was on your side. More tea?”
“You going to marry her?”
Gil folded his paper into neat fourths. He had saved the crossword for Matthew. “Am I what?” He wondered why everyone was looking to lock him into a long term relationship.
Matthew took a pen from his front pocket and began to fill in the words. “You got your hearing fixed last year, so I know that can’t be it. I asked if you are going to marry her.”
“Are you going marry Sofia?” Gil had asked the question believing that it cause his brother to relinquish the subject. It never occurred to him that a man in heir family line would be capable of any lasting commitment.
“Yes.”
Gil watched his eyes sparkle from his brother’s head. “What?”
“I have to ask first.”
“When are you going to ask?”
“On Valentine’s day.”
“That’s next week.”
“Good to see that you are not a complete romantic oaf. What are you getting Sara?”
Grissom watched his brothers limber fingers move across the newsprint. “Sara and I aren’t a couple.”
“Oh.” He stopped writing. “What are you then?”
“Friends”
“Naked kiss each other’s body parts friends?”
Gil pulled his brother’s empty cup towards him. He refilled it with the hot brown brew. He pushed it back to him and handed him a lemon. “Drink this it will help your throat.”
Matthew’s blue eyes sparkled. His brother missed nothing. Why then did he think Matthew was so easy to fool? Maybe he didn’t.
“And that’s okay with you?”
Gil read something upside down. “It’s okay with both of us.”
“So what about this guys she’s seeing?”
“What about him?”
“You know him?”
“He’s a cop.”
“That’s very incestuous.”
“Where else are we going to meet people? We law enforcement types have so much free time.”
Matthew could be relentless when it suited him. “So you go to work every night and you see the woman you are what?”
“We are not having this discussion.”
“I know that you are the strong silent type but let me tell you how this whole brother thing works. You are the big brother. You give advice. Tell me to wear a condom and get me out of jail should the need arise. I am the little brother. I encourage you to break the rules for once, to live a little and I will come get you out of jail should the need arise. In between, we work on the “f” words, feelings and family.”
Gil regarded him over the breakfast food. He hadn’t talked about it with anyone. He knew that he needed to deal with this thing between him and Sara.
“What does Sofia know?”
“That you and Sara have a thing for one another…apparently the entire lab knows that.”
“I thought I was more subtle than that.”
“About as subtle as you were when she came by yesterday. I had to go home and take a cold shower.”
The poker face wasn’t working anymore if it ever had. He knew that that his carefully constructed façade was falling apart he hadn’t known it was becoming apparent to everyone.
“Sara and I have known one another a long time. We are close.”
“You are fucking.”
“Matthew, do you really have to be so crass?”
Matthew waved a piece of toast at him. “When two people aren’t dating but they are having sex that’s what it’s called Gil.”
“It’s just when you say it about Sara…and I.”
“It’s different?” Gil was disconcerted by the Grissom eyebrow Matthew shot him. It was being interrogated by someone that looked like him, someone he couldn’t evade or lie to.
Gil did mimic a so-so movement with his head. “Yeah it’s different.”
“How?”
“It just is.”
“So you gonna let this other guy take your girl?.”
“She’s not my girl, Matthew.”
“Don’t you ever want to get married, big brother?” He’s call Gil that from the start. He liked it. Big brother showed that he belonged to someone besides his mother and his absentee father. He wasn’t an only child now. He was responsible for someone else even if Matthew was a grown man. It eased the pain of not having a serious woman in his life.
The though of Matthew paired off just as he found him made Gil reticenst about sharing his own romantic befuddlement.
The sadness around his eyes was difficult for Matthew to see. “I am too old for all that now. Once a long time ago I had those dreams even then they weren’t very realistic. Now I am nearly 50 years old. The dye is cast. Sara should be with someone closer to her on age. Someone she can have children with, grow old with.”
Matthew grappled with a way to make his brilliant brother see how flawed his thinking was. “What? You got a bad case of the mumps when you were kid. What’s wrong with your equipment? Maybe she wants to grow old with you. Have you even asked?”
Gil thought of Sara’s overture after the explosion with shame. “She asked me out once.”
Matthew watched as the sadness crept to his mouth. He felt like a bartender hearing a confession. “I told her no. Told her I didn’t know what to do about this…She’s done waiting for me as she should be.”
Matthew empathy was replaced with incredulity. “That woman who was standing in your living room with that dress on asked you out and you said no? Hell I am in love and I can’t promise that I would say no to her. Gil, what were you thinking?”
“I was thinking that I am her boss and that I am too old for her.”
“Oh so you can sleep with her, but you can’t date her. I am very unclear about you boundaries.”
“The sex started out…it wasn’t planned.”
“You just keep doing it.”
“You are twisting my words. It’s not like that.”
Matthew shook his head. Gil was possibly the most thick headed man that he had ever seen. “Do you love Sara, Gil?”
“You make it sound so simple.”
“You love her more or less than your work.”
Gil was tired of hiding. This was his brother, his friend. He wanted to tell someone. “More…much more.”
“Gil, we aren’t our father.”
Mathew had moved from his small apartment and rented a town house a few doors down from Gil’s. Matthew met Gil at his back gate. The elder Grissom choked back a laugh.
