chapter 8

(Please do not review to correct me on the newsboy strike.
I'm using the information from the movie NEWSIES and the book novel.
I want Jeffrey and Morgan to meet the newsies and alot of things are
gonna happen because of it. Including Morgan meeting family too, hence
the last name Jacobs.I will be using alot of the lines from the movie and
book in here. LOL)

Chapter 8

Olivia and Bogg keep a lookout for Drake and then spot him coming towards them.
He casually sits down at the table)
Drake: Hello Bogg and Olivia.
Bogg: Hello Drake.
Drake: It's nice to see you again.
Bogg: Cut the crap, we know you want your omni back.
Drake: I have a deal for you, you give me my omni and Morgan and Jeffrey
won't get hurt.
(Bogg lunges at Drake, Olivia grabs his arm and pulls him back to sit down.)
Olivia: Bogg.
Drake: Right now there are two men holding them in the hotel room.
Bogg: You lie Drake.
(A man comes up to Drake and whispers in his ear, Drake looks at Bogg and Olivia)
Drake: Seems they used an omni and escaped, I guess it's time to use plan B.
Bogg: And what's that?
Drake: This.
(Drake pulls out a gun and points it at them.)
Olivia: You really think, you'd get away with it?
Drake: Worth a try, I always make sure to have another one of these just in case.
(Morgan and Jeffrey land on Cobblestone with a thud in an alley.
They slowly get up.)
Morgan: Ugh cobblestones, I hate landing on these.
Jeffrey: I know, are you ok?.
Morgan: Yeah, I'm ok, where are we?
Jeffrey: Just a sec.
(Jeffrey opens the omni and reads it)
Jeffrey: June 10, 1889, New York.
Morgan: Red light?
Jeffrey: Blinking like crazy, got any ideas?
(Jeffrey closes the omni and clips it to his pants, he covers it up with his shirt)
Morgan: Let's see, we were learning about child labor laws of that time and
if I remember correctly the newsboys were going on strike against the big
newspapers when they raised the selling price to 10 cents a hundred, they
are suppose to go on strike the 11th or 12 of June.
Jeffrey: Really?
Morgan: Yeah, the newsies strike set in motion better child labor laws and
more was done about it so that children weren't working from sun up to sun
down and they could actually be kids.
Jeffrey: I guess we should find out what's going on.
(Jeffrey starts to walk out of the alley and Morgan grabs him by the arm)
Morgan: Hold on, we can't go out of this alley looking like this.
(Morgan motions to their clothing)
Jeffrey: Right.
(Awhile later Morgan and Jeffrey come out looking like they belong there.
They start to walk. Morgan looks around)
Morgan: If I remember correctly, we need to find the distributing office where
they sell the newspapers.
Jeffrey: Maybe he can help us.
Jeffrey: Excuse me, can you tell me where the distributing office is?
Man: Down the street and take a left, you can't miss it.
Jeffrey: Thanks.
(The man leaves and Morgan adjusts her newsboy cap.)
Morgan: Come on let's go, we need to find out what's going on.
Jeffrey: We really should get back to Bogg and Olivia.
Morgan: First rule that Olivia told me, never leave when the omni's blinking red.
Jeffrey: That's not the point.
Morgan: Then what's the point, if we leave and don't fix it?
(Jeffrey didn't answer Morgan as they walked. Morgan smiled when she saw the gate)
Morgan: This is it, come on.
(Jeffrey and Morgan walk through the gate and watch the other newsies stand
in line. Two boys in bowler hats come walking to the line, they notice Morgan
and knock her down. Morgan yells in pain as her shoulder hits the ground.)
Boy: Back of the line, you little shrimp.
Cowboy: Hey, leave em alone Morris.
(The boy dressed as a cowboy sticks his hand out and Morgan takes it, she stands
up and brushes off her clothes, she ignores the slight pain in her shoulder and
then looks up at the tall boy)
Cowboy: You ok?
Morgan: Yeah, I'm fine. (Morgan lies)
Cowboy: The name's Jack kelly.
Morgan: Morgan Jacobs, but you can call me Lit'l Bit if you want.
Jack: Lit'l Bit, I like that.
(Jack Kelly turns back to boy with the bowler hat and gets right into the boy's face
and insults him and a chase begins.
Morgan watches as Jack is being chased, a boy with curly hair comes up to them.)
Curly haired boy: You two must be new, I've never seen you around here before.
Morgan: Yeah, we just came in, we're from Chicago.
Curly haired boy: I'm mush.
Morgan: I'm Morgan Jacobs and this is Jeffrey Jones.
Mush: Have you've ever sold papes before?
Jeffrey: Papes?
Morgan: He means newspapers.(Morgan whispers to Jeffrey)
Mush: Yeah.
Morgan: No, is it hard?
Mush: Not if the headlines are good, if they are bad, you have to stretch the
truth a little.
Jeffrey: You mean lie?
Mush: Yeah, you have to eat right?
Jeffrey: Yeah.
Boy: So who's these two?
Mush: Morgan and Jeffrey, they are from Chicago.
Boy: I'm Race.( Race puffs on a cigar.)
Morgan: Nice to meet you Race.
(Morgan and Jeffrey are introduced to alot of the newsies. Two boys come up
and one of them is knocked into and Jack Kelly runs again and knocks the two
guys with the bowlers down and scales the canopy and the swings on the gate.
The line moves and they find themselves at the window.
Morgan: Sorry, I don't have any money.
Race: Here, take the two bits, you can pay me back when you sell your papes.
Morgan: Thanks.
(Morgan buys her papes and splits them with Jeffrey. A tall boy with curly
hair with a younger boy is up next and he starts to argue with the man in the
window. Jack goes up there and counts the papes that are only 19 and he tells
the man in the window something. After awhile Jack gets the boy more papes.
Morgan watches as they exchange words and the younger one follows the older
one, the one newsie bargains with them about teaching them how to sell and
spitting the money. They bump into Morgan and Jeffrey.)
Jack: David and Les, this is Morgan and Jeffrey.
Morgan: Hi.
Jack: So you two want to sell with us?
Morgan: Sure, I'm sure we can use your help, right Jeffrey?
Jeffrey: ah-huh.
(Morgan and Jeffrey follow them, when they get to the end of the D.O they
stop a young girl walks by them and the newsies whistle at her. Morgan rolls
her eyes)
Jack: First thing you gots to know, headlines don't sell papes, newsies sell papes, got it?
Morgan: Got it.
Jeffrey: got it.
(Jeffrey and Morgan follow them again to a boxing ring and start selling their
papes. Morgan's not doing too bad, she ignores the ache in her shoulder and concentrates on
selling all of her papes. Les already gets yelled at by David for taking a sip of beer, but
then gives David the shiny quarter he made from the bet. Morgan manages to sell her 10 and Jeffrey
gets rid of his last pape. Morgan and Jeffrey pocket the money. Morgan notices a man staring at Jack
and asks)
Morgan: Is he a friend of yours, because he seems to be staring at you Jack.
Jack: No, come on, we gotta get out of here.
(Jack takes off and everyone follows him, Morgan notices that the man is with cops and Jack runs into an apartment building. Once on the roof. Jack jumps and
motions for the others to jump and duck down)
Man: Sullivan, wait til I get my hands on you!
Morgan: Sullivan?
Jack: Shhh.
(The man leaves and they sneak down and take off to a huge building.)
Morgan: Wow, this place is huge.
Jeffrey: Sure is.
Jack: Come on.
(They sneak into the back and David asks tons of questions, when a woman comes
down the stairs)
Medda: Shoo get out of here.
Jack: You wouldn't kick me out without a kiss goodbye would you Medda?
Medda: Jack Kelly, oh I miss seeing you up in the balcony.
(Morgan watches as Jack gives her a kiss on the cheek)
Jack: This is Medda the Swedish Meadowlark and my friends David, Les, Morgan and Jeffrey.
Jack: So Medda is it ok if we stay here for awhile, until a little problem
goes away?
Medda: Stay as long as you like, Tony get them anything they want to eat.
(A few minutes later they all watched Medda perform. Morgan was amazed at how
beautiful Medda was as she ate some candy, Morgan was glad the ache in her shoulder
finally stopped, she noticed that David, Jack and Jeffrey were watching Medda very
closely and rolled her eyes. About 2 hours later they were walking outside)
Jack: Did you like that?
Jeffrey: She was amazing.
David: How do you know her?
(Jack explains that she knew his father and that he wanted to someday go to
Santa Fe to be a real cowboy. Morgan listened closely, when there was a loud
noise and took off after the boys when they ran towards the noise. A fight had
broken out and Morgan was shoved back as men with chains and clubs were beating
up the other men)
David: Jack, it's late, why don't you and the others come meet my folks.
Morgan: That sounds like a great idea.
(Jack picked up Les, who had fallen asleep and they walked towards a building.
Morgan noticed how rundown it looked, but knew that it was a home with a family.
David led them all in. He opened the door as Jack walked in with sleeping Les)
Esther: Oh my what happened?
David: Nothing mother, he's just sleeping.
Mayer: It's late.
(Morgan watched as the mother took Les and carried him to bed, pulled off his
shoes and tucked him in as she tenderly kissed his forehead.)
David: This is Jack Kelly, Morgan Jacobs and Jeffrey Jones, this is my parents
and my older sister Sarah.
(I looked over Sarah who was sewing and she was blushing)
(David walked over to the table and pulled out all the money he and Les had
made and let it fall on the table)
Mayer: You made all of this selling papers?
David: Well half of it is Jack's.
Mayer: Esther, why don't you put some more water in the soup, we have guests.
(About an hour passed when everyone was talking. Sarah had noticed that Morgan
is dressed like a boy)
Sarah: Morgan do you always dress like a boy?
Morgan: Yes, I guess so.
Sarah: And sell papers too?
Morgan: Ah-huh.
Esther: Maybe Sarah can find somethng for you, a dress to wear, I'm sure she
has some hand me downs you can borrow and I can alter them for you.
(Jeffrey looked at Morgan and laughed behind his hand).
Morgan: No, it's ok, I need to sell papes tomorrow.
Sarah: You can come work with me at the factory.
Morgan: No,I need to sell papes.
Mayer: Did David say your last name is Jacobs?
Morgan: Yes, Morgan Elizebeth Jacobs, but I'm sure it's a common last name.
Mayer: Not around here.
Morgan: I was name after an aunt that lived in Chicago years ago.
Mayer: Hmm seems you maybe family. I have a brother who's married to a Morgan
in Chicago.
(Morgan looks at Jeffrey and he shrugs his shoulders)
Sarah: I still think Morgan shouldn't be selling papes.
Esther: Sarah, maybe she likes it, I won't push it ok darling?
Mayer: Sarah, why don't you get the cake, you're mother is hiding in the cupboard?
Esther: That's for your birthday.
Mayer: I've had enough birthdays, this is a celebration.
(When everyone had their fill of cake, Morgan wondered around the apartment and
looked at the pictures scattered around there, she found the one she was looking
for it was her great aunt that she was named after, the same picture in the frame
that she use to have on her nightstand when she lived in the house with her parents. She recognized it. Jeffrey who noticed walks up to her and whispers.)
Jeffrey: Are you ok?
Morgan: There she is Jeffrey and in the same frame I use to have on my nightstand.
Jeffrey: You can't let them know.
Morgan: I know, I recognize some of the stuff in here my mother got when it was
passed down to her. The plates we ate on, the silver ware and the glasses we drank
from.
David: Why don't you three stay here for the night?
Jack: No, I think Jeffrey should stay with me, but Morgan should stay the night, since they don't allow girls where we're staying.
Esther: That sounds like a splendid idea, Morgan you can sleep with Sarah.
Morgan: Really it's not necessary.
Sarah: We insist, besides we can be like sisters.
Jeffrey: Morgan, we'll meet you at the D.O tomorrow morning, don't be late.
Morgan: I won't.
(Jeffrey and Jack leave, talking)
Jack: So how long have you've known Morgan?
Jeffrey: For awhile, we're really good friends, why?
Jack: She's really different from the girls here.
Jeffrey: She's a great girl.
Jack: Think she likes me?
Jeffrey: I don't know, do you like her?
Jack: Yes.
(Jeffrey doesn't let Jack see the look on his face. They head to a building.
Jeffrey looks up and reads it. Newsboys Lodging House and meet Race by the door)
Jack: So how's it going Race?
Race: Remember that hot tip I told you, nobody told the horse.
(The walk in and Jeffrey is shown to the wash room, he gets in a bunk and lays down.
It doesn't take long for him to fall asleep. Sarah finds Morgan a nightgown, Morgan
slips it on, making sure the bandage stays put on the back of her shoulder and then comes out)
Sarah: Looks great, come on we got to get some sleep, we have to get up early in the morning.
Morgan: How early?
Sarah: 5am, besides you have to sell papes and you have to make sure you are at the D.O to stand
in line, you can leave with David and Les..
Morgan: That's early.
(Morgan lays down, she tries to fall asleep, but it's not easy, the bed is
nice, she feels very safe there, but the sounds of the night are different
and she tries to ignore the throbbing in her shoulder. Morgan finally falls asleep to
the sound of Sarah's steady breathing.)
