Chapter 8
AN: Okay, so we now have one Earthling awake and causing havoc (only eleven more to go). Lol. As I awaken more and more, I’ll leave a list behind so you guys will be able to tell which Earthling is awake and whether or not we’ve seen their Cylon doubles. I’ll also include brief particulars such as their purpose on board the ship and whether or not there is any relation/relationship amongst any other crew member. But only as that information becomes known. So here is the first one.
Unknown Earthling #1: Alexis Richards
Finallylater on in this chapter is a little hint on how the Earthlings inevitable arrived on the Cylon Base.
Chief Tyrol helped Cally to stand up checking to make sure she wasn’t hurt. He glanced around to see what damage had been done during the brief attack. He saw several of the medical staff moving towards wounded personal but it looked like no one was serious hurt.
It looked like the Marines had took care of the threat before any major damage could be done. He glanced over to where Lee now stood with the Earthling. The limp body told him that whatever adrenalin that was rushing through her body had expired. Dr. Cottle rushed over to inspect her and after a brief check, he motioned for Lee to carry her back to her bed.
He gazed over to where several guards surrounded Sharon. As she willing relinquished her weapon, one guard approached her with cuffs. He watched as the guards than led Boomer back to the small area that had been set up for her since the transport of the Earthlings and their ship.
He had been ignoring the female Cylon since he had learned that she would be working in the hanger bay. And following his lead, the rest of his crew had followed his example, barely speaking to Boomer as she tried to help them understand the technology that imprisoned the humans as well as their ship.
As Sharon surrounded by guards past him, she glanced at him. He turned his gaze away without meeting her eyes. He had seen her reach for the weapon during the Cylon attack. Worried for his friends and shipmates, he had begun to rush her before fire from the Cylons forced him to take cover. She must have seen his approach because the brief glance she had given him had been filled with accusation and hurt.
He pushed the range of emotions aside in order to put together his team and the hanger bay back in order. He glanced over to the now open ship and sighed. He knew it would be awhile and that he would have to wait for the Commander before he would get his chance to peek inside.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She was dreaming again. No…reliving a memory would be more accurate. She knew the outcome of this particular dream.
“What is it?” Alexis asked. The woman that stood in front of her nearly vibrated with excitement. She couldn’t hold back the smile that graced her face at seeing her oldest friend’s reaction to her latest find.
“It’s an ancient text.” She replied. She opened the book delicately afraid to damage the priceless item.
“Is it Greek?” Alexis leaned over, taking her first glance at the book and the writings with in. She had received a call earlier from her friend and was barely able to make out her words in all the excitement that came across the line. Alexis rushed over to see what all the fuss was about as well as welcome home the friend she hadn’t seen for the last six months.
Brilliant shoulder length blonde hair swayed back and forth as she shook her head. “It’s older. But the language isn’t anything I’ve seen before.”
Alexis frowned. “But you found it at your latest dig?”
“Yes, we found it in a small tomb-like room off the main chamber in the temple.”
Alexis waited for her friend to continue but soon realized that the woman she loved like a sister was completely ignoring her, enraptured by the weird writing of the book.
“Oh, For God Sakes, Tricia. Tell me already.” Alexis said. She knew that if she allowed her friend to continue her study of the book, that there would be no hope in drawing her out again.
“Huh? Oh.” The wide eyed stare slightly diffused by the glasses she wore rose to meet those of her friend. “Like I said, we found it at the dig. But the writings inside aren’t anything I every seen. It’s defiantly not Greek…or Latin. Obviously, there not hieroglyphics or Sanskrit. I don’t know what it is.” Tricia replied. She turned to several already open reference books, flipping through several pages. She found the page she was looking for and turned the book over to her friend. “I’ve only seen something like it once. Here. But no one in the field actually believes the reference. They think it’s a big hoax.”
Alexis looked at the picture in the book and glanced back at the text that was currently in question. “Okay, I can see where you get that this may be the same language but again, I reiterate, what language is it?” She tried to read the caption of the picture. “For that matter, what language is this book in? Chinese?.”
The look Tricia sent Alexis could have burned holes into the woman. “Not even close. French…you illiterate moron.”
“Hey, I resent that. Just because I don’t know a gazillion languages, doesn’t mean I’m a moron. And that’s no way to treat your best friend, you tall freak. Answer the damn question.” Alexis ordered.
Tricia grabbed the book and turned it towards her before reading the caption underneath the picture. ‘Though there are many skeptics, the above depicts an ancient language many believe to be Atlantian.”
Alexis stood stun for a moment, shook her head as if to clear her ears and glanced at the now serious gaze of her best friend. “Are you serious?”
Tricia waited for the information to sink in. As she expected, Alexis began laughing…hysterically.
“Oh My God. That was good. Nice way to say ‘Hi! Nice to see ya again.’ Oh, that was the best. You really had me going there.” Alexis sat down, her legs unable to hold her up during her giggle fit.
Tricia closed the book loudly and slammed it onto the table. She leaned down and looked at Alexis directly in the eye.
The laughter slowly faded as Alexis looked at her friend. Her laughter tapered off with a gasp as Alexis whispered. “Your serious.” Tricia nodded. “Oh My God. Are you serious?” Tricia repeated her last action. “But it’s a myth. Atlantis. Are you serious?” This time Tricia didn’t even bother nodding but looked at her friend, exasperation clearly coming through.
Alexis looked down at the ancient text before her. While they both loved to play practical jokes on each other as well as others, Alexis now knew that her friend was anything but joking. Alexis reverently touched the page and carefully turned it.
On the next page, one picture took up the entire space. It was a simple drawing in black ink slightly faded by time. It depicted a bird…maybe even a phoenix but Alexis couldn’t be sure because the line drawing was very abstract.
She looked up to her standing friend. “Can you translate it?”
“I don’t know. Without a reader…something like the Rosetta Stone, it’ll be incredibly difficult.” She leaned over Alexis and gently flipped the book to the back. “But there is one page where both this writing and Greek are intermingled. It may be enough for me to figure it at least that much of the book. Than I can use that to go through the rest and slowly work my way through it. But it’ll take time.”
“What about getting help? You can call that college that supplied you with grad students.” Alexis asked.
Tricia shook her head. “They laughed at me when I told them I suspected that it was written in Atlantian.”
“What? Are they morons?” Alexis fired off.
“They refuse to even allow me to use their facilities. They’ve even stopped allowing grad students to volunteer at my dig sites. Their worried that I may have compromised the site with false artifacts. If this turns out to be a hoax, their reputation could be ruined and they could lose funding for their department. ”
“Uh…HELLO!” Alexis’s arm swept the large study they were currently in. The dark wood, built in book shelves filled with old and new books as well as some ancient artifacts, the furniture rich in color as well as original paintings all screamed to the wealth of the owner. “Don’t you like…donate a lot of said funding?”
Tricia sighed. “Yes, and I expect a letter thanking me for my years of support and explaining that while future support would be greatly appreciated, reputation is worth more than money in such a prestigious university.” Tricia placed emphasis on prestigious by using her fingers to quote the word.
“Idiots.” Alexis said, crossing her arms.
Tricia rolled her eyes. “Be that as it may be, the fact remains that I alone will be translating the text which will take years…maybe decades to complete.”
Alexis thought over her friend’s statement for a moment and began shaking her head. “No…I may be able to help.”
“Your barely speak English, how are you going to help?” Tricia smiled, showing that she was joking at her friend.
Glaring at Tricia, she said. “Funny. No, really. You said you can translate the last page, right?” At her friends nod, Alexis continued. “There are several translating programs currently on the market, I could use one and modify it. It won’t translate the rest of the book but it should help.”
Light sparkled in the blonde’s eyes. “How long will it take to do that?”
“I can start right away. I just finished that job with the Navy last week so I’m free. But most of it will have to wait until you got that page translated. Than I can modify the program which…should take about…two months.”
“So long?” Tricia’s eyes dimmed.
Alexis laughed. “You should be used to things taking so long. Who spends hours slowly brushing away dirt from a building? Plus what’s two months relative to ten years?”
Tricia shrugged her shoulders still bummed at having to wait. Alexis tried to explain the delay.
“We’re not dealing with a language the program will be able to read like translating English to…French or Chinese.. I’ll have to code it so that it doesn’t ‘read’ the text but to look at each character separately and compare it to the characters you were able to translate. Considering how thick this thing is..’ Alexis picked up the book, proving her point by motioning to the three inches of pages between the leather bindings. ‘and that it was all hand written, the program will have to take into account slight variances, that will take some time.”
Tricia stared at the item held in Alexis’s hands as her friend continued. “Than we play the Ultimate Edition of Cryptograms.”
Tricia looked up. “I love Cryptograms.”
Alexis laughed again. “You are such a dork.” Her laughter died down as she glanced down at her friend. “We’ll get this done, without those uptight stuffy scholar-types.”
The two friends smiled at each, both looking forward to the day that they would be able to delve into the secrets that the ancient text was bound to reveal.
The memory faded from her unconscious mind, and Alexis was drawn deeper into a dreamless sleep without memory.
Lee watched as Dr. Cottle administered a mild sedative into the woman that had recently been awake.
“She’ll sleep for awhile now. And while she does, her body will be able to recover more from the confusion andweakness brought on by the time spent within the pod.” Cottle explained.
The com link above them came alive. “Lieutenant Apollo, report to the CIC, immediately.”
Lee recognized the voice of Petty Officer Dualla and shook his head. His father must have been informed that shots were fired in the bay and would want a report on what had happened. He dreaded in telling his commanding officer that it was his weapon that had ultimately started the altercation with the Centurions.
Laura Roslin looked at the pilot with a little sympathy understanding the dread that she was able to read in the younger man’s face. “I’ll go with you.”
He nodded his thanks and two exited the once again screened area where the female rested. As they made their way to the main exit, they were surprised at the sudden sound behind them.
“NO!” Chief Tyrol said, running towards the ship that was at that moment closing the hatch. Before he could even attempt to stop the sealing, the hatch raised to its pinnacle, once again sealing off its interior. “FRAK.” Tyrol yelled.
He turned to the rest of his crew, looking at each one expectantly. “Does anyone remember the words she spoke?”
As he glanced at each individual, he noticed thoughtful expressions being replaced by a negative shake of their heads. Tyrol looked hopefully at the Lieutenant who had been closest to the woman.
Lee thought for a moment, reliving the event in his head. “Something like Pen A Me.” Lee looked over at the ship, hoping that it would open again.
Cally spoke up. “No, there was an Oh sound somewhere and I think an S.”
Tyrol walked over to the smaller figure and turned her until she was facing the hatch area of the ship. “You…stand here and start remembering what she said.”
Cally looked at the Chief like he had momentarily lost his sanity but at the serious expression, she nodded her understanding. “Yes, sir.”
Laura smiled at the exchange between the two. She looked back at Lee. “We should hurry before your father sends the Marines after us.”
Lee returned the smile and with the sounds of Cally’s light voice following them, they exited the hanger bay.
“Pe On As Me?”
AN: I think the tall blonde freak comment is a pretty big hint on who this Earthling closely resembles. So I’ll include her into our list of characters. For those who recognize the name, yes, Tricia is the real first name of the actress who plays Number Six. I just thought that would be a nice touch plus a lot less work for me in keeping a bunch of new names with the character in my head. Hope no one gets offended and if you do… consider it as homage to the great actors and actresses that are a part of this great series.

One last thing, I was going to wait awhile before posting these last two chapters in hopes of milking the reviews but than thought that that would be unfair and dishonest. Lol, so now I must beg you. If you are reading this story and even like it just a little bit, please…PLEASE take a moment to review. I’m addicted, I’ll be the first to admit to it. Thank you for hearing my plea. And I hope to have more for you very soon (I promise not to milk it)
