The moment Don’s hand wrapped around his wrist Charlie’s skin started burning. He looked into Don’s eyes and saw something he had never seen before, something he could not quite define. So he wrung his hand out of Don’s tight grip and left the hospital in a run.
Charlie entered his house, confused, unable to talk and shivering. He gave the door a little push and expected it to fall shut. But the push had been too gentle, too soft, too weak, and so the door only leaned against the doorway. Charlie couldn’t hear the click; he turned around and gave the door an angry look. He then grabbed the handle, opened the door again and slammed it shut with all his strength that was left. The loud hammering sound echoed through the whole house, shortly followed by a desperate and frustrated cry of Charlie’s. He sat down hard and abruptly on the ground, unable to keep himself on his feet any longer, while unstoppable tears were wetting his cheeks.
He looked wrecked, ruined not to say. He could not understand, this wasn’t supposed to happen. Why him? Why Don? Why his brother? A nightmare had come true, it felt so terribly real and it could not be made undone again. It was too late. Charlie had crossed a border, invisible yet feelingly present. He had gone too far already. There was no point of return. How would he ever be able to look at Don? He wanted to rip out his heart, it hurt so badly. His eyes went down to his wrist and the sobs subdued for a while. He ran his index finer up and down the spot where Don had held him.
“This isn’t fair.”, he said, voice shaking and nearly inaudible.
Charlie pulled his knees to his chest and hid his face, body trembling from heavy crying, eventually a name escaped his lips, the only one that had always meant everything to him.
“Don.”
The phone rang so suddenly that Charlie jumped to his feet at once, terrified. He breathed out deeply and tried to get a hold of himself, tried to appear controlled and calm. He went into the living room to answer the phone.
“Hello?”
It was useless; he failed in pretending that he was alright. How could he? He cleared his throat slightly and repeated his “Hello”, a bit stronger this time.
“Charlie?”
He froze.
“Don?”
“Please don’t hang up!” Don sounded nervous and panicked. “Just listen to me, okay? You don’t have to say anything. Just lemme…”
Charlie nodded as he whispered “Okay.” Into the speaker.
“I… Well, I actually don’t know where to begin… I…I want you to know that…” He paused. “No, wait. Let me start again.” He took a deep breath. “I understand that you feel different for me than I feel for you.”
Charlie’s knees immediately gave in at that and he sank to his knees.
“I can accept that. I am sorry for hurting you, I never intended to. I hope you will be able to forgive me someday for what I did in the hospital room this very day.”
Charlie blinked several times.
“I…It’s gonna be tough for a while…for both of us, I guess…” A small laugh, a bit desperate to Charlie. “I can only hope that we will figure this out one day.”
Don seemed to have finished.
“Don?” Charlie’s eyes widened while he was saying this.
“Yes, Charlie?”
“Do you love me?”
Charlie was stunned by his own words, they seemed to have been lingering in his mouth for a while, wanting to be freed at last.
“Yes...”, Don answered quietly, an audible gulp followed. “More than I am supposed to.”
Charlie smiled.
“Come back to me, Don.”
Charlie’s voice was so low that Don had to listen very closely to understand every word.
“Come back and tell me eye to eye.”
After that Charlie hung up.
